인간의 본심(本心)이 아무리 선을 지향하여 노력한다고 하여도, 이미 악주권하(惡主權下)에 놓여진 이 세계에서는 그 선의 실상을 찾아볼 수 없게 되었기 때문에, 인간은 시공을 초월한 세계에서 그 선의 주체를 찾으려 하지 않을 수 없게 된 것이니, 이러한 필연적인 요구에 의하여 탄생한 것이 바로 종교(宗敎)인 것이다.

이와 같이 타락으로 인하여 하나님을 모르게 된 인간은 종교를 세워 부단히 선을 찾아 나아감으로써 하나님을 만나려고 한 것이었기 때문에, 설혹 종교를 받들고 있었던 개인이나 민족이나 국가는 망하였다 할지라도 종교 그 자체만은 오늘에 이르기까지 계속 남아져 내려오고 있는 것이다. 이제 이러한 역사적인 사실을 국가 흥망사(國家興亡史)를 중심하고 더듬어 보기로 하자.

먼저 중국(中國)의 역사를 보면 춘추전국(春秋戰國)의 각 시대를 거치어 진(秦) 통일시대가 왔고, 전한(前漢), 신(新), 후한(後漢), 삼국(三國), 서진(西晋), 동진(東晋), 남북조(南北朝)의 각 시대를 거치어 수(隋) 당(唐) 통일시대가 왔으며, 오대(五代), 북송(北宋), 남송(南宋), 원(元), 명(明), 청(淸)의 시대를 거치어 오늘의 중화민국(中華民國)에 이르기까지 복잡다양한 국가의 흥망과 정권의 교체를 거듭하여 내려왔으나 오늘에 이르기까지 유(儒)·불(佛)· 선(仙)의 극동종교(極東宗敎)만은 엄연히 그대로 남아져 있다.

다음은 인도(印度)의 역사를 살펴보더라도 마우리아, 안드라, 굽타, 바루다나, 사만, 가즈니, 무갈제국을 거쳐서 오늘의 인도에 이르기까지 국가의 변천은 거듭되어 내려왔으나 힌두교만은 쇠하지 않고 그대로 남아 있다.

人間の本心がいかに善を指向して努力するとしても、既に悪主権の上におかれているこの世界においては、その善の実相を見ることができなくなってしまっているので、人間は時空を超越した世界に、その善の主体を探し求めなければならなくなった。

このような必然的な要求によって誕生したのが、すなわち宗教なのである。このように、堕落によって神を失ってしまった人間は、宗教をつくり、絶えず善を探し求めて、神に近づこうとしてきたので、たとえ宗教を奉じてきた個人、民族、あるいは国家は滅亡したとしても、宗教それ自体は今日に至るまで、絶えることなく継続してそのまま残ってきたのである。それでは、このような歴史的な事実を、国家興亡史を中心として、検討してみることにしよう。
 
まず、中国の歴史を見ると、春秋戦国の各時代を経て、秦統一時代が到来し、そして前漢、新、後漢、三国、西晋、東晋、南北朝の各時代を経て、隋唐統一時代がきた。さらに、五代、北宋、南宋、元、明、清の時代を経て、今日の中華民国に至るまで、複雑多様な国家の興亡と、政権の交代を重ねてきたのであるが、今日に至るまで、儒、仏、仙の極東宗教だけは、厳然として残っているのである。

つぎにインドの歴史をひもといてみても、マウリア、アンドラ、クシャナ、グプタ、ヴァルダーナ、サーマン、カズニ、ムガール帝国を経て、今日のインドに至るまで、国家の変遷は極まりなく繰り返してきたわけであるが、ヒンズー教だけは衰えずにそのまま残っているのである。

However hard the original mind may struggle to attain goodness, we can hardly find any examples of true goodness in this world under the sovereignty of evil. Human beings have thus been compelled to seek the source of goodness in the world transcendent of time and space. This necessity has given birth to religion.

Through religion, fallen people mired in ignorance have sought to meet God by ceaselessly striving toward the good. Even though the individuals, peoples and nations which championed a certain religion may have perished, religion itself has survived.
 
Religion has endured through history despite the rise and fall of many nations. In the history of China, the Chao dynasty and the Warring States were followed by an era of unification in the Ch’in dynasty. This was followed by the Former Han, Hsin, Later Han, the Six Dynasties, and an era of unification in the Sui and T’ang periods.

They were followed by the Five Dynasties, Northern Sung, Southern Sung, Yuan, Ming, Ch’ing, the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China. In its history, China has experienced many cycles of the rise and fall of dynasties and numerous transfers of political power, yet – the religions of the Far East – Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism – have continued to thrive.
 
The history of India has witnessed the empire of Mauryas followed by the Guptas, Harsa, Calukyas, the Mughals, Maratha, the British Raj, and today’s independent India. Despite the rise and fall of many kingdoms, the religion of Hinduism has survived and prospered.
