김순남의 예술세계..."불교 우주론의 철학적 깊이와 추상"

[미술여행=윤경옥 기자]김순남 작가가 뉴욕과 뉴저지에서 있는 두 번의 초대전 중, 뉴욕 Gala Art Center (갈라아트센터) 전시를 지난 3월 5일부터 23일까지 성황리에 마무리 했다. 김 작가는 이어 뉴저지 Paris Koh Fine Arts (파리스코 파인 아트)에서 4월 1일부터 10일까지 두번째 전시를 개최한다.

김순남 작가는 1995년부터 2014년까지 20년간 뉴욕과 뉴저지에 거주하며 작가로서의 기반을 다진 곳이다. 이번 미국 전시는 김순남이 제2의 고향과도 같은 뉴욕과 뉴저지에서 10년만에 개최하는 전시다. 특히 김 작가는 이번 두번의 전시에서 2018년 독일에 거주하며 시작한 뉴심포니시리즈에 포함되는 작품들을 뉴욕 Gala Art Center와 뉴저지 Paris Koh Fine Arts에서 처음으로 선보인다.

●김순남의 예술세계..."불교 우주론의 철학적 깊이와 추상"

파리스코 파인 아트(Paris Koh Fine Arts, 201 Bridge Plaza North, Suite 1, Fort Lee, NJ)는 김순남 작가의 개인전 “추상의 조화와 인드라망의 역동성 표현(Harmonic Abstraction - Indra’s Net in Motion)”을 개최한다.

전시는 2025년 4월 1일부터 10일까지 진행되며, 개막 리셉션은 4월 1일(화) 오후 6시부터 8시까지 진행된다. 이번 전시 “추상의 조화와 인드라망의 역동성 표현”은 불교 우주론의 철학적 깊이와 추상 표현주의의 역동적인 구조를 연결하는 김순남 작가의 예술 세계를 탐구한다.

이 전시의 중심에는 “뉴 심포니 시리즈”가 자리하며, 이는 우주의 영적·음악적 조화를 시각 언어로 번역하려는 시도이다. 김순남의 예술 여정은 초기의 구상적 표현에서 출발하여, 점차적으로 추상으로 발전했다. 이는 단순한 형태의 재현만으로는 보다 깊은 존재론적 진실을 전달하는 데 한계가 있음을 깨닫고, 새로운 조형 언어를 탐색한 결과였다.

그의 회화는 불교의 '인드라망' 개념에서 영감을 받아, 점, 선, 색이 한데 어우러지는 우주적 춤을 시각적으로 구현한다. 추상미술의 선구자로 불리는 바실리 칸딘스키가 회화를 음악적 작곡의 연장선으로 보았듯이, 작가 또한 그녀의 작품을 하나의 심포니로 여긴다.

그녀는 팔레트 나이프를 사용해 유화 물감을 겹겹이 쌓아 올리며, 즉흥적인 제스처를 통해 정교하고 상호 연결된 질감을 만들어낸다. 그녀의 작품은 서양 교향곡의 구조적이면서도 감성적인 특성을 반영하며, 파토스(감성)와 로고스(질서)가 공존하는 조화로운 장(場)을 형성한다.

김 작가의 창작 철학의 핵심에는 “아바타암사카 수트라(화엄경)”에 등장하는 인드라망의 개념이 자리한다. 불교적 우주론에서 인드라망은 끝없이 펼쳐진 거대한 그물로 묘사되며, 그물의 각 교차점에는 모든 것을 반사하는 보석들이 놓여 있다. 각 보석은 서로를 비추며 끊임없이 영향을 주고받는다.

이러한 상호 연결의 원리는 김순남의 회화에서도 반영된다. 그녀의 작품은 단순한 형태를 그리는 것이 아니라 살아 숨쉬는 균형과 울림의 체계를 형성한다. 이번 전시에 포함된 "세레나데" 연작은 "뉴 심포니 시리즈" 내에서도 보다 친밀한 탐구를 보여준다.

비교적 소형 작품들인 "세레나데"는 색의 조화와 질감의 미묘한 상호작용에 집중하며, 작가의 대형 작품들이 보여주는 시각적 오케스트레이션의 축소판이자 미시적 반영이 된다. 이는 단순한 회화가 아니라 평화와 조화, 그리고 순환하는 생명의 본질을 기원하는 시각적 기도와도 같다.

김작가는 서양 음악의 구조적 규율과 불교 우주론의 무한한 연결성을 결합함으로써, 문화적·학문적 경계를 초월하는 작품을 창조해낸다. 그녀의 작품은 감상자를 색과 선, 리듬이 융합된 명상적 공간으로 초대하며, 추상이면서도 깊은 영적 심포니를 경험하게 한다.

김순남은 서양 교향악, 불교 철학, 그리고 추상미술이 교차하는 지점을 탐구하는 화가이다. 작가는 뉴저지시티 대학교에서 회화 및 드로잉 석사 학위를, 페이스 대학교에서 재무 관리 MBA 학위를 취득했다. 김작가의 작품은 한국, 독일, 미국 등에서 국제적으로 전시되었으며, 특히 유네스코 문화유산인 통도사 내 통도사 성보박물관과 뉴욕의 에제어 갤러리에서 개인전을 개최했다.

김순남의 작품은 뉴욕 타임스 및 BTN 불교TV에 소개되었다. 또한, 그녀는 10년간 킨 대학교 미술학과에서 겸임 교수로 재직했으며, 뉴욕의 펜 앤 브러시(Pen and Brush, Inc.)에서 이사회 멤버로 활동했다.

The exhibition will run from April 1 to 10, 2025, with an opening reception on Tuesday, April 1st, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.The exhibition "Harmonic Abstraction: Indra’s Net in Motion" delves into the artistic world of Soonnam Kim, whose works bridge the philosophical depth of Buddhist cosmology with the dynamic structure of abstract expression‎ism. At the heart of this exhibition is the "New Symphony Series," a body of work that seeks to translate the spiritual and musical harmony of the universe into a visual language.Soonnam Kim's artistic journey began with figurative representations, gradually evolving into abstraction as a response to the limitations of representational art in conveying deeper existential truths. Inspired by the intricate interconnections depicted in the Buddhist concept of Indra’s Net, Kim's paintings become visual symphonies where dots, lines, and colors interweave in a cosmic dance.Much like Wassily Kandinsky, often regarded as the father of abstract art, Kim sees painting as an extension of musical composition. Her works are akin to symphonies, wherein disparate elements find unity through rhythm, contrast, and balance. Using a palette knife, she orchestrates layers of oil paint across the canvas, allowing spontaneous gestures to manifest as intricate, interconnected textures. The dynamic yet meditative compositions recall the structured yet emotive nature of Western symphonic music, embodying both pathos (emotion) and logos (order).The concept of Indra’s Net, as described in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra (Hwaeom Sūtra), serves as a foundational metaphor for Kim’s creative philosophy. In this Buddhist allegory, the universe is envisioned as a vast, interconnected web adorned with countless reflective jewels, each mirroring and influencing the others. This notion of interdependence resonates with Kim’s artistic process, where each mark on the canvas contributes to an intricate, ever-evolving whole. Her paintings do not merely depict forms but rather embody a living, breathing system of balance and resonance.Kim's "Serenade" pieces, featured in this exhibition, offer a more intimate exploration within the larger "New Symphony Series." These smaller-scale works intensify her focus on color harmonies and the tactile interplay of pigment, revealing a microcosmic reflection of the larger visual orchestration. They serve as visual prayers—delicate yet profound invocations of unity, peace, and the cyclical nature of existence.By synthesizing the structural discipline of Western music with the boundless interconnectedness of Buddhist cosmology, Soonam Kim creates paintings that transcend cultural and artistic boundaries. Her works invite the viewer into a contemplative space where color, line, and rhythm converge—an abstract yet deeply spiritual symphony in motion.Soonnam Kim is a painter whose work explores the intersection of Western symphonic music, Buddhist philosophy, and abstraction. She holds an MFA in Drawing and Painting from New Jersey City University and an MBA in Financial Management from Pace University. Kim has exhibited internationally, with solo shows in Korea, Germany, and the U.S., including at the Tongdo Museum of Tongdosa (a UNESCO Heritage Site) and Ezair Gallery, New York. Her work has been featured in The New York Times and BTN Buddhist TV. She has served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Kean University for 10 years and as a board member at Pen and Brush, Inc., New York.

김순남 작가

이번 전시에 선보이는 ‘세레나데: 조화’라는 제목의 작품들은 나의 ‘뉴 심포니 시리즈‘에 속하는 다소 작은 크기의 그림들이다.

뉴 심포니 시리즈는 팔레트 나이프를 사용해 점, 선, 색의 조형 요소에 집중하여 액션 페인팅을 하며, 다양한 색의 유화 물감으로 캔버스를 가득 채운 그림이다. 뉴 심포니 시리즈가 서양의 클래식 교향곡 음악과 같이 우주의 역동적이면서 조화로운 파동를 시각적으로 형상화한 것이라면, 그 중, 세레나데 작품들은 더 친밀하고 섬세한 느낌을 준다고 할 수 있다.

부제인 ‘조화’와 화면에 자주 등장하는 두 개의 원형으로써 모든 존재들의 상호연결성과 조화의 절실함을 표현하였다. 팔레트 나이프로 수없이 많은 점과 선들을 중첩해 나가면서 화면의 리듬감과 질서를 찾아가는 나의 예술 행위는 마치 티베트 불교 수행자가 하염없이 염주를 돌리며 불영속성의 무상한 것들에 대한 집착을 내려놓고, 우주의 ‘텅 빈 듯 충만한 기운’과 하나가 되는 무심의 상태에 도달하기를 염원하는 기도 수행과도 같은 것이며, 클래식 음악 작곡가가 다양한 악기 소리들을 꿰어서 조화로운 청각적 컴포지션을 만들기 위해 부단히 노력하는 것과도 닮았다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

불교 경전에 나오는 ‘인드라망’과 같이 이 우주가 거대한 파동의 그물망으로 연결되어 있으며, 그 안의 모든 존재들이 서로 반영하며 의존하고 있다고 나는 믿는다. 그러하기에 나의 예술적 창작 행위와 그 결과물인 그림은 인류와 우주에게 보내는 화합과 평화를 위한 나의 메시지이며 기도이다. “그대가 늘 평안하기를......”

<Artist Note>

The works titled 'Serenade: Harmony' showcased in this exhibition belong to my 'New Symphony Series,' which consists of relatively small-sized paintings. The New Symphony Series features action painting with a palette knife, focusing on the formal elements of dots, lines, and colors, filling the canvas with a variety of oil paint colors. While the New Symphony Series visually embodies the dynamic yet harmonious waves of the universe, much like a Western classical symphony music, the Serenade works, in particular, provide a more intimate and delicate feeling. The subtitle 'Harmony' and the frequently appearing two circles in the artwork express the urgency of interconnectedness and harmony among all beings.My artistic act of overlapping countless dots and lines with a palette knife to find rhythm and order on the canvas is akin to the prayer practice of a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner who endlessly turns prayer beads, letting go of attachment to impermanent things of non-eternal nature, and aspiring to reach a state of no-mind, becoming one with the 'seemingly empty yet full energy' of the universe. It is also comparable to the relentless effort of a classical music composer to weave together the sounds of various instruments into a harmonious auditory composition.I believe, like Indra's Net in Buddhist scriptures, that this universe is interconnected by a vast web of waves, and all beings within it reflect and depend on each other. Therefore, my artistic creative act and the resulting paintings are my message and prayer for harmony and peace for humanity and the universe. “May you always be at peace...”

김순남 작가

김순남 작가는 경상남도 산청에서 태어났으며, 창원에서 성장기를 보내었고, 국립창원대학교 예술대학 미술학과에서 서양화를 전공했다.

1995년에 미국 뉴져지 주립대학교(New Jersey City University)에 석사과정으로 유학을 가서 MFA과정을 마친 후, 2004년부터 2013년까지 연속 10년간 뉴저지 주립대 Kean University 미술학과에서 겸임교수로 재직했다.

미국에서 20년 동안 교수, 예술가, 아내로서 생활한 후, 2014년부터 독일 부퍼탈에서 5년간 전업 예술가로 활동하였으며, 뉴 심포니 시리즈 작품들은 이 시기에 시작되었다. 2019년, 한국으로 돌아와 서울에 작업실을 마련하여 창작활동을 하고 있다.

현재는 경기도 광주에 있는 영은미술관의 입주 작가로서 창작활동을 하고 있다. 2005년에 뉴저지 아시아여류화가 5인전에 초대되어 뉴욕타임즈에 크게 보도된 바 있고, 2014년에 뉴욕의 알재단이 기획한 재미한인작가 아카이브 2부 'Shades of Time: An Exhibition from the Archives of Korean-American Artists, 1989-2001' 전시와 카탈로그에 선정된 작가 46인에 포함되어 Queens Museum of Art와 뉴욕 한국문화원 Gallery Korea에서 전시된 바 있다.

2022년에는 한국의 대표적인 불교 사찰 중 하나로 1,000년 이상의 역사를 자랑하는 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재된 통도사 성보박물관에서 개인전을 하는 영광을 가졌다.

2020년부터 2022년까지 BTN불교TV에서 세 번의 인터뷰와 보도가 되었고, 2021년 10월에는 법보신문의 주수완 교수의 시리즈 '불교를 사랑한 예술가들'에 52번째 예술가로 선정되었다. 그 외에도, 그는 한국일보, 내일신문, 법보신문, 경남매일, Art & Culture, 미술여행TV, 전시가이드, The Scoop, 미주현대불교, Kean University Administrative Report 등 다양한 매체에 소개된 바가 있다.

미술비평가 안현정 박사는 김순남 전시 비평글에서 “진정한 삶을 향한 작가의 질문은 최근작인 ‘NEW SYMPHONY'시리즈에서 극대화된다. 끊임없이 이어지는 원의 파동, “어떻게 표현할 것인가? 어떻게 전달할 것인가?”이러한 질문이 유심이라면, 작품이 던지는 역동적인 에너지는 기화된어 무심으로 이어진다......

김순남의 작품 앞에서 모든 짐을 내려놓는 무심의 상태와 만나게 된다는 뜻이다.”라고 하였다.

1992년 대학시절, 칸딘스키의 저서를 읽고 크게 감동을 받은 후, 그는 서정적추상 컴포지션을 주로 연구하였는데, 2018년부터는 면과 형을 제거하고 점, 선, 색의 에너지에 집중하여 교향곡을 들을 때의 감흥과 유사한 자유로움과 조화로움을 느끼게하는 뉴심포니시리즈를 통하여, 모든 존재는 상호 연결되어있어서 ’인드라 망‘과 같이 파장을 통해 서로 영향을 준다는 그의 불교적 사유와 명상을 표현해 오고 있다.

작가는 그의 작업이 관객에게 울림을 주고 평화와 상호 연결의 감각을 전달하기를 바란다고 말한다.

Soonnam Kim was born in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, and grew up in Changwon, Korea. She majored in Western painting in the Department of Fine Arts at Changwon National University. In 1995, she went to the United States to pursue a Master's degree at New Jersey

City University, where she completed her MFA. From 2004 to 2013, she served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Kean University in New Jersey for ten consecutive years. After living in the United States for 20 years as a professor, artist, and wife, she moved to

Germany and worked as a full-time artist in Wuppertal for five years from 2014. Her New Symphony series paintings began during this period. In 2019, she returned to Korea and established her studio in Seoul. Currently, she works as an artist in residency at the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, Korea.

In 2005, she was invited to participate in an exhibition featuring five Asian women artists in New Jersey, which was prominently featured in The New York Times. In 2014, she was selected as one of 46 artists for the exhibition and catalogue of "Shades of Time: An Exhibition from the

Archives of Korean-American Artists, 1989-2001," organized by the AHL Foundation in New York. This exhibition was held at the Queens Museum of Art and the Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Center in New York. In 2022, she had the honor of having a solo exhibition at the Seongbo Museum of Tongdosa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in

Korea, which is recognized as one of the top three Buddhist temples in Korea, with a history of over 1,000 years. From 2020 to 2022, she was interviewed and covered three times by BTN Buddhist TV. In October 2021, she was selected as the 52nd artist in Professor Soowan Joo's series "Artists Who Loved Buddhism" in

Beopbo Newspaper Issue 1605. She has also been featured in media such as The Korea Times, Naeil Newspaper, Beopbo Newspaper, Gyeongnam Maeil, Art & Culture Magazine, Art Tour TV, Art Review Guide, The Scoop, Modern Buddhism, and Kean University Administrative Report, among others.

Art critic Dr. Hyunjung Ahn wrote in her critique of Soonnam Kim's art, "The artist's quest for true life is maximized in her recent 'NEW SYMPHONY' series. The endless wave of circles, 'How to express it? How to convey it?' If these questions are intentional, the dynamic energy emitted by the works is vaporized and connected to a state of

non-intention... It means that in front of Soonnam Kim's works, one encounters a state of non-intention, where all burdens are laid down."In 1992, during her university years, Soonnam Kim was deeply moved by reading Kandinsky's writings. This led her to study primarily lyrical abstract composition. Since 2018, she has focused on the energy of

dots, lines, and colors, removing shapes and forms. Through the New Symphony series, which evokes a sense of freedom and harmony similar to listening to a symphony, she expresses her Buddhist thoughts and meditation. She believes that all beings are interconnected, much like 'Indra's Net,' where all being influences one another through its waves.

She hopes that her works resonates with viewers and conveys a sense of peace and interconnectedness.
