1960년대를 넘어 1970년대를 강하게 맞닥뜨리던 유럽과는 달리 요란했던 1960년대가 소리없이 사라진 미국은 깊은 허망함과 탈정치화된 시대의 무리들만이 역사에 남았다. Eagles는 그 중심지 California에서 지난날의 허망함을 이 앨범 「Hotel California」로 이야기 하고자 했다.​

미국의 식민 역사를 빗대어 1960년대에 대한 향수와 아쉬움이 반영된 'Last Resort'는, 분위기처럼 그다지 따뜻한 곡은 아니다. 제목처럼 앨범의 마지막에 수록되어 조용한 읊조림 속에 강한 여운을 남긴다.

Eagles의 힘은 그 메시지에 있다. 처음엔 사운드의 단조로움에 먼저 익숙해지겠지만, 메시지와 연결될 때 비로소 그 섬세함이 읽히면서 강렬해진다. 이 앨범은 수록곡 대부분이 은유와 중의적인 의미로 인하여 오히려 사전적 의미와는 다르게 느껴지는 경우가 많다.

바다를 건너온 아버지가 그랬던 것 처럼

She heard about a place

그녀는 사람들이 웃으며
산다는 곳에 대해 들었고

They spoke about the red man's way,
how they loved the land.
사람들은 인디언이 어떻게 그 땅을 사랑했었는지를 이야기 했었지

And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
여러 곳에서 록키산맥으로
모여든 사람들이지

Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide.
살 곳을 찾거나 아니면
은신처를 찾아서 말야.

Down in the crowded bars out
for a good time,
좋은 시간을 갖기 위해 찾은
산 아래의 붐비는 술집에서

Can't wait to tell you all
what it's like up there.
산 위의 생활이 어떤지를
모두에게 빨리 전하고 싶네

And they called it paradise,
I don't know why.
왠지는 모르겠지만
그들은 거기를 '천국'이라 불렀지

Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high.
마을이 높아지는 동안
산들은 깍아내려졌지

Then the chilly winds blew down
across the desert,
그때 사막을 가로질러
차가운 바람이 불어왔지

Through the canyons of the coast
to the Malibu
해변의 계곡을 관통해서 말리부로 말야

Where the pretty people play
hungry for power
멋진 사람들이 권력을
갈망했던 그 곳으로

To light their neon way and
give them things to do.
네온 길을 밝히고 그들에게
할 일을 주기 위해

Some rich man came and raped
the land, nobody caught 'em,
부자들이 와서 땅을 유린했지만,
아무도 부자들을 말리지 못했어.

Put up a bunch of ugly boxes
and, Jesus, people bought 'em.
추한 상자들이 내려졌고, 맙소사
사람들은 그것을 샀어요.

And they called it paradise,
the place to be,
그들은 거길 천국이라 불렀어,
천국이 되어야 할 곳.

그들은 흐릿한 태양이 바다 속으로

Just like the missionaries did
so many years ago.
오래 전 선교사들이
그러했던 것 처럼...

They even brought a neon sign
'Jesus is Coming',
그들은 "예수 재림" 이라 적힌
네온싸인도 들여왔지.

Brought the white man's burden down, brought the white man's reign.
백인들의 짐은 내려지고,
백인들이 통치하는 시대가 되고

Who will provide the grand design?
what is yours and what is mine?
누가 원대한 계획을 제시할건가?
무엇이 네 것이고 무엇이 내 것인가?

'Cause there is no more new frontier,

더 이상의 새롭게 개척할 곳은 없고,
우리는 여기서 이뤄내야 하기 때문에
