2. Firmly Believing a Single Word from a Sage
Before starting elementary school, the boy attended a Seodang, a traditional village school. There, he studied classical texts such as the Cheonjamun(Thousand Character Classic), Dongmongseonseup(First Lessons for Youth), Gyemongpyeon(Primer of Awakening), Myeongsimbogam(Precious Mirror for a Clear Heart), and Tonggam(similar historical comprehensive mirrors), a historical collection of wise stories.
In his hometown of Namsan-dong in Yeongdeok-eup, there was a small temple called Deokheungsa, a branch of the famous Bulguksa Temple. The temple was known for a special Buddhist painting called Jesok Taenghwa. The boy's grandmother often visited this temple, and she would share its stories with him.
One day, when the boy was about thirteen or fourteen years old, he visited the temple by himself. There, he met A smart-looking young monk.
The monk spoke softly to the boy:
“Have you heard this saying? "A mind that is cultivated for just three days becomes a treasure for a thousand years. But riches chased for a hundred years become nothing but dust in a single morning." And the monk then said "Do you know what that means?”
The monk went on:
“When you paint a tiger, you can draw its skin, but not its bones. In the same way, you can see a person’s face, but not their heart. This comes from the ancient book Zhuangzi.”
At that moment, something deep stirred in the boy’s heart.
Later, he said "It felt like a wave of light was rushing through me."
