It was a concert for the fans. The five boys from Korean boyband SHINee gave the Singaporean Shawols a memorable night to remember from their first solo gig in the country Text: Joanna Goh SHINee’s Onew doing his thing on stage The concert kicked off promptly at 6pm with Onew, Key, Minho, Taemin and Jonghyun head-banging to a mixture of fast tempo dance songs like ‘Get Down’ and ‘A.Mi.Go’, complete with stage pyrotechnics and green strobe lights. Decked in their signature skinny jeans, the group finally spoke their first words — through a translator — to the eager crowd after crooning to a hit songs such as ‘Juliet’ and ‘Hello’. While most of the members greeted their fans in Korean, Shawols (official fanclub name of SHINee) were particularly delighted when Key gave a shout-out of love in fluent English: “Long time no see huh? We miss you so much!” Apart from their slick groovy dance moves and pop ballad tunes, the highlight of the concert went to the boys’ individual showcase which displayed their different strengths that included pretty faces, buff bods, vocal ranges, and everything else imaginable. The boys turn into white angels for ‘Lullaby’ Appearing in a puffy-sleeve racerback green top, 18-year-old Taemin thrilled the crowd when he performed a solo ballad ‘A Boy Meets A Girl’. Following Jonghyun’s falsetto performance of ‘First Love’, Minho gave his best R&B take on the Usher song, ‘OMG’, teasing Shawols with a peek-a-boo appearance of his six-pack abs in a white-black dapper suit. As Taemin pranced around the stage as a blonde chick, play-acting to ‘My First Kiss’ with Key, it was Onew’s solo opera act which took place much later that night, that took the cake and left everyone jaw-dropped. For starters, we never knew that this 21-year-old, the group’s main vocalist and leader, had it in him to pull off a flawless rendition of ‘Neesun Dorma’, a tune previously performed by Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. From colourful street fashion to contemporary urban wear, the boys also temporarily morphed into floating angels with white satin choral outfits. The concert progressed at a fast pace and was peppered with minimal talk and little close-up interactions with fans. When it finally boiled down to the final two songs, the five lads reappeared in their official concert tees and bags of colourful balls. While Jonghyun tossed his readily towards the fans in the two mosh areas, Key made an effort to kiss every single ball before tossing them into the hysterical crowd. Accepting gifts and plushy hats from fans, a couple of the members also got upclose and personal with some lucky Shawols. A handful of girls managed to score exclusive polaroid pictures and fancams of the boys who were also game enough to pose for them — despite the strict no photo-taking rule imposed in the stadium’s premises, unlike Super Show 3.With the help of the concert organizers, local fanclubs gave the gig a personal and local touch with banners hanging on the stadium’s railings. Keys’ fans also distributed and printed red banners with the words “Happy Ki’s (Key’s) Day” to celebrate the singer’s upcoming 20th birthday on Sep 23. Before the group called it a night, they had the entire stadium break out into a birthday song for Key, a cohesive effort to give both the singer and local fans a memorable night to remember. If you are a fan of the boys, we bet it was the best night of your lives. For the non-fans, it was a chance to experience their diverse vocal talents and perhaps be convinced that they are more than just a bunch of pretty faces.

In town for a one-night only concert yesterday, xinmsn met up with the five young lads for a short 20-minute interview — where each media was allocated about five minutes — at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, right before their performance. Decked in their first costume of the night, the five boys strode out and greeted the media present energetically with their usual introduction, “Hello! We’re the shining SHINee!” Member Minho added in English, “We’re SHINee.” SHINee World Concert is the band’s first concert and Singapore is currently their first and only stop across Southeast Asia. While the lads were tight-lipped about what the fans could expect at the concert, they hoped that it would give them a chance to be closer to their fans and have more interaction with them. (L to R) Onew, Taemin, Jonghyun, Minho and Key Surely, SHINee would feel nervous and worried about performing at their first solo concert, which attracted 6,000 concert-goers? A confident Jonghyun replied, “We don’t get nervous much. While we don’t have any special pre-concert rituals, we would say ‘Fighting’ together, to cheer each other on before the concert.” Jonghyun With a concert named ‘SHINee World’— which essentially meant ‘shining land, a place filled with spirit’ — one could not help but wonder how the boys’ ideal world would look like. “I want to create a fun and pretty place, like a fairytale or a theme park,” Taemin, the youngest member of the group, answered. Taemin Onew added, “I would like to gather everyone I know and live in a place together.” SHINee is no stranger to Singapore, with this trip being the band’s fourth time in town. Some fond memories the five boys remembered included mouth-watering local delights such as chili crabs and Singapore’s cleanliness. However, SHINee crowned the warm and overwhelming responses they received from their local fans, their one most memorable experience here. Jonghyun and Minho Key “The first place where we meet our fans is the airport. That’s our most memorable experience,” Key answered sincerely. Throngs of fans had gathered at the airport before day break yesterday, just to catch a glimpse of their idols. However, 22-year-old Onew must have had a good feeling about their big night. For right after Key answered, the leader added, “After tonight, the concert’s going to be our most memorable experience.” xinmsn is proud to be the official online media for SHINee World Concert. They excitedly went on to talk of what they would love to do if they weren’t famous. Onew, 22, wanted to strut down the busiest street in towan back home in South Korea, while Jonghyun, 21, wanted a day out on the beach. Key, who turns 20 later in this month, wanted to attend a Halloween party, and Taemin, 18, wanted to go to a school camp.
