2. 성인의 말씀 한마디를 철썩같이 믿다 Firmly Believing a Single Word from a Sage

[眞如華]

”공부란 그런 것이구나! 그 공부를 해야겠다는 마음이 가득했어요.

나는 촌철살인의 말들을 좋아합니다. 어려서 서당에 다닌 영향일 거예요.“

스님이 되어 경전을 공부하게 되었을 때, 자신처럼 경전 속의 한마디 말에 발심(發心)을 하고, 도를 깨친 이들이 수두룩하다는 것을 알았다.

대표적으로 일자무식이었던 나무꾼 총각이 나무를 팔러 여관에 갔다가 ‘머무는 바 없이 마음을 내라’라고 하는 <금강경> 읽는 소리를 듣고서, 그 길로 출가를 하여 나중에 중국 선종의 여섯 번째 조사스님이 된다.

”점철성금(點鐵成金)이라는 말이 있어요. 한 방울의 과즙이 쇳덩어리에 떨어지면 그 쇠가 황금으로 변한다는 말입니다. 또 혁범성성(革凡成聖)이라는 말도 있지요. 성인의 한마디 말씀이 범부를 고쳐서 성인으로 만든다는 말입니다.“

<초발심자경문>에서 잊지 못할 명구 하나를 빼들고, 김진욱 소년을 훗날 ‘대한민국 화엄대종주’ 무비스님으로 거듭나게 한 그 똘망똘망한 동자승은 지관스님의 동생이었다.

소년이 머리를 깎고 사미가 되어 해인사 강원에 갔을 때 강주로 계시던 지관스님 밑에서 공부를 했다. 인연의 그물은 그토록 촘촘하다.

“I realized, ‘Ah, so this is what true learning is!’ ,

that one phrase opened my heart. From that day on, I longed to study in that way. Maybe because I studied at Seodang,

I've always loved words that are short but powerful.”

The boy who now grown into a monk said.

When he later began studying the Buddhist scriptures, he discovered that many others also had a spiritual awakening from just a single line in the scriptures and had realized the truth.

There is a well-known story about a young woodcutter who could not read or write. One day, he went to an inn to sell wood, overhearing someone reciting aloud from the Diamond Sutra:

"Let your mind arise without abiding anywhere."
The moment he heard this, he decided to become a monk. That young man later became the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism in China.

There’s a saying:
“Even a single drop of medicine can turn iron into gold.”
Another goes:
“A single word from a true teacher can awaken the sacred within an ordinary person.”

And that bright-eyed young monk, the one who spoke such a powerful phrase from the Admonitions for Beginning Aspirants and set the boy, Kim Jin-wook, on a course to be reborn as Mubi Seunim, the Great Hwaeom Patriarch of Korea, was the younger brother of the great teacher, Jigwan Seunim.

Years later, when the boy became a novice monk and shaved his head, he went to study at the famous Haeinsa Temple. His guiding teacher there was none other than Jigwan Seunim, who was then serving as the Head Lecturer.

Truly, the threads of destiny are woven in quiet and mysterious ways.
