The Settlers of the Stone Age (Mayfair Games)
The highly-anticipated next edition in the Settlers of Catan series is now available! The cradle of modern humans, called "Homo sapiens" by scientists, was located in Africa more than 100,000 years ago. The first branches of this family began a journey that spanned thousands of years, eventually leading them to Australia and America. The enormous difficulties of this journey could only be overcome because of Homo sapiens' unique ability to adapt to its environment. Their highly developed brains and their mastery of crafts enabled them master even the harshest conditions.

Amun-Re (Rio Grande / Hans im Gluck)
Reiner Knizia's next "big game"! Reiner tells us: "My game, Amun-Re is a big, resource management game. And it's a game that plays in about 90 minutes. It has a board and an epic story behind it. It's a struggle in ancient Egypt. It's quite a challenging game -- not an easy family game. It should delight the gamers who like Euphrat & Tigris and Durch die W?te and so on." (see interview, mentioned at top of newsletter.) Everyone knows of the pyramids on the Nile - eternal monuments of a powerful and beautiful culture, that can still take our breath away. The pharaohs choose their sites, build their pyramids, and thank Amun Re and the other Gods for their bounty. Each player wants, as pharaoh, to build the most pyramids. To accomplish this, he must first acquire a province, where he can trade and farm. With his profits, he can buy new provinces and building stones to erect pyramids. For all his actions, the player must make clever use of his power cards. And always offer appro
priate sacrifices to Amun Re. But, will it ever be enough? Whatever happens, a player must always keep his eyes on his goal: the building of eternal pyramids. For when a player loses sight of his goal, he will surely lose the game!

Balloon Cup (Rio Grande / Kosmos)
The next installment in the hugely popular Kosmos 2-player series, designed by none other than spielfriek Stephen Glenn! In Balloon Cup, the players compete in several short balloon flights (hops) to collect the colored cubes associated with each hop. When a player has collected enough cubes of a given color, he earns the trophy card for that color. Players may even trade 3 otherwise useless cubes for 1 they can use. The first player to earn 3 trophy cards is the winner! Each player has a hand of eight balloon cards. The players play their balloons on mountain or plain hops. Players play their high-valued balloons on the mountains and their low-valued balloons on the plains. Players usually play their balloons on their side of the hops, but winds (and cunning) can cause them to play on their opponent뭩 side, a move that can ruin their opponent뭩 plans.

Bean Trader (Rio Grande / Amigo)
The Bohnanza Board Game! The players take the roles of bean traders and are members of the famous Bohn Hansa, the union of northern European cities and merchants involved in the bean trade in the middle ages. The players travel from Hanse city to Hanse city in wagons filled with valuable beans to deliver bean orders and to buy more beans. When a player is in a city and has an order card and the necessary beans to fulfill the order, he may deliver the beans and collect the value of the order from the bank. When two or more players are together in a city, they may trade beans among themselves. Trading beans is important as it allows players to get rid of unwanted beans and acquire needed beans. In addition, a player will buy beans in the city, if they have the kind he wants. From time to time, the bean supplies will be replenished as described on new harvest cards. After eight new harvests, the game begins its last round. After this last round, the game ends and the player with
the most bean thalers (money) is the winner.

Carcassonne: Traders & Builders (Rio Grande / Hans im Gluck)
In this 2nd expansion to Carcassonne, 24 new landscape tiles not only offer new terrain such as bridges and bent cities, some tiles also contain goods symbols. Players use these to acquire wine, cloth and grain. The best traders can get additional profits at the end of the game. Builder tokens are also new to the game -- when placed in a city, a second tile may be played when expanding the city or roads leading from it. Pig markers are also new -- these can be placed with a farmer to enrich the value of a farm. Also included is a cloth bag for the tiles, making it easier to shuffle and draw them during the game, as well as making the game more portable. The expansion has components for 6 players and is completely compatible with the first expansion. Thus, players may play with the original Carcassonne, with Carcassonne and the 1st expansion, with Carcassonne and the 2nd expansion, or with Carcassonne and both expansions!
