Have you ever bought a faulty product? Or perhaps you got some really bad service somewhere and wanted to say something about it? Then you have probably made a so-called claim to someone about such things. People often use the term claim to refer to an expression! of dissatisfaction about something. They will make a claim to the management or to the sales representative or to the customer service department. The term claim, however in used incorrectly in this context.
In English, the term claim has many different usages. It is used to refer to a demanding of, asking for, or taking something that is rightfully yours. For example you may claim a reward or claim your luggage. It also has to do with insisting that something is true. For example, someone might claim that they did something. These terms are very different from the Konglish usage of the term claim.
When you want to express your dissatisfaction with something, you don’t make a claim, you make a complaint. A complaint can be an expression! of dissatisfaction, discontent, regret, resentment, or pain.
Remember, next time you wan to express that you don’t like something or are unhappy with something, you don’t make a claim, you make a complaint.
