원문 The Agents The word "agent" in this movie refers to the machine police of the matrix simulated world and are the human race's enemy. Agents are, the words of Morpheus, "Sentient programs. They can move in and out of any software still hard wired to their system. That means that anyone we haven't unplugged is potentially an agent. Inside the matrix, they are everyone and no one." The dictionary has several meaning for the word "agent." They include: "A person or thing that acts or has the power to act." "A drug or chemical capable of eliciting a biological response." By definition, the agents injected Morpheus with an agent (which is a play on words!) in order to break Morpheus down so he would tell them the codes to Zion. An organism that is a cause of disease. (Note that Agent Smith called the human race as a virus and he called the machines the cure.) "A person who acts in an official capacity for a government agency." In cyberspace, an agent is "a program that gathers information or performs some other services without your immediate presence." In addition, an agent program can search all or part of the internet and gather information for you based on parameters you set. In the movie, the agents are always on the look out for the human rebel forces and they use their ear pieces to communicate with one another. Agent Smith: "We'll need a search running." Agent Jones: "It has already begun." Note that the three agent names (Brown, Jones, and Smith) are all common last names in the United States. The use of the word "Smith" also has another interesting connection. Agent : 대리인. Agent : 생물학적인 반응을 유도해 내는 약물이나 화학성분. 그렇다면 모피어스를 심문할 때에 시온의 메인프레임으로 접속하는 코드를 알아내기 위해 모피어스에게 주사한 것도 말하자면 'Agent'인 것이다. Agent : 질병을 유발하는 유기체. 스미스 요원이 인류가 바이러스이고 그들이 치료제라고 말한 것을 생각해 보라. Agent : 사이버 용어로 'Agent'란 운영자의 즉각적인 지시 없이도 스스로 정보를 수집하거나 다른 활동을 수행하는 프로그램을 말한다. 인터넷의 발전과 함께 정보검색의 방법으로 많이 사용된 것으로 인터넷 상에 올려지면 정해진 방식에 따라 정보를 검색하고 수집하며 다른 Agent 프로그램과 만나면 정보를 교환하기도 한다. 요원들의 행동도 유사하다. 인생의 목적인 하나뿐인 것처럼, 매트릭스에 반항하는 인간이 있는지 항상 감시하여 찾아낸다. 또한 그들 나름대로의 '삼위일체'가 형성된 것처럼 언제나 같은 생각을 하고 같이 행동하는 일심동체이다. 'Smithereens'라는 단어가 있다. '파편'이라는 뜻인데, 네오가 스미스 요원의 몸에 들어가 폭발하자 산산조각나는 것을 연상하게 해준다. 세 요원의 이름을 그냥 넘어갈 수 없다. Smith, Jones, Brown 인데. 미국에서 가장 흔한 이름(last name)이다. 이것은 무슨 의미가 있을까? 요원들이 아무 시스템에나 침투할 수 있는, 그러니까 누구나 요원일 수 있으니 요원이란 가장 흔한 존재라는 뜻일까? 그렇기 때문에 굳이 요원에게 특별한 이름을 붙일 필요가 없다는 의미일까? 내가 가진 한가지 생각은 이렇다. 요원들의 이름은 지극히 현실적인 이름이다. 매트릭스가 가짜일지라도 말이다. 반대로 모피어스는 현실에 있지만 이름의 뜻은 꿈나라에 어울린다. 이 아이러니를 어떻게 이해하면 좋을까?
