Monsieur Linh était fort alors. Il avait porté la tante sur son dos durant presque tout le voyage de retour. Tous ses muscles saillaient sur son corps. Il avait les bras puissants, prompts à arrêter un buffle en l’empoignant par les cornes. Ses jambes aussi étaient puissantes, sur lesquelles il prenait appui pour retourner d’un coup de hanche ses adversaires à la lutte durant la fête du village. C’était il y a longtemps. Sang diû n’était pas née, bien sûr. Ni le père de Sang diû, son fils. Monsieur Linh était encore un jeune homme qui n’avait pas pris femme et sur le chemin duquel les jeunes filles se retournaient et gazouillaient à la façon des oiseaux au printemps.

Monsieur Linh was strong in those days. Throughout almost the whole of the journey home he had carried his aunt on his back. All his muscles bulged on his body. He had powerful arms, easily able to stop a buffalo by gripping it by the horns. His legs were powerful too, and he would propel himself with a swivel of the hips to deliver a blow to his opponents when he wrestled with them at the village fair. It was a long time ago. Sang diû was not born, of course. Neither was Sang diû’s father, his son. Monsieur Linh was still a young man who had not taken a wife and, as he passed by, the girls used to turn and twitter to one another in the way birds do in springtime.

오늘, 린 씨는 늙었고 약하다. 알지 못하는 나라가 그를 소진시킨다. 죽음은 굶주린 새끼 염소들이 그것들의 어미에게 그렇게 해서 그것(=염소 어미)이 더 이상 견딜 수 없기 때문에 옆구리를 대고 눕는 것처럼 그를 빨아댔다. 죽음은 그에게서 모든 것을 가져갔다. 그는 더 이상 아무것도 가지고 있지 않다. 그는 더 이상 존재하지 않는 마을로부터 수천 킬로미터 떨어져 있으며, 시신들로부터 불과 몇 걸음 떨어지지 않은 채 주인 없는 무덤이 되어버린 묘지들로부터 수천 킬로미터 떨어져 있다. 그는 한때 아름답고 즐거웠던 삶으로부터 수천 일의 시간 너머에 있다.

Aujourd’hui, Monsieur Linh est vieux, et fatigué. Le pays inconnu l’épuise. La mort l’épuise. Elle l’a tété comme les chevreaux avides le font avec leur mère, et que celle-ci se couche sur le flanc parce qu’elle n’en peut plus. La mort lui a tout pris. Il n’a plus rien. Il est à des milliers de kilomètres d’un village qui n’existe plus, à des milliers de kilomètres de sépultures orphelines des corps morts à quelques pas d’elles. Il est à des milliers de jours d’une vie qui fut jadis belle et délicieuse.

Nowadays, Monsieur Linh is old, and weary. The strange land exhausts him. Death exhausts him. It has fed on him in the way eager young goats suckle their mother, forcing her to lie on her side because she cannot continue. Death has taken everything from him. He has nothing left. He is thousands of kilometres from a village that no longer exists, thousand of kilometres from the empty tombs of the corpses who died only a few feet away from them. He is thousands of days away from a life that was once beautiful and delightful.

그것을 깨닫지 못하고 린 씨는 공원 맞은편에 있는 벤치 위에 막 손을 얹었다. 전날 그가 쉬었던 그곳이다. 약간 몸집이 크고 상냥하고 웃음 짓는 그 남자가 그에게 말하고 그의 어깨에 손을 얹었던 그 곳. 그는 앉아서 갑자기 그에게 그 남자의 기억이, 담배를 먹어 치우는 듯한 그의 입에 대해서, 근엄하면서도 웃음 짓는 눈에 대해서, 이해할 수 없는 낱말들을 발음하는 그의 목소리에 대해서 되살아나게 되었고, 또한 그가 그의 어깨에 그의 손을 놓았을 때, 그가 그렇게 반응한 것에 대해서 부끄러워지기 전에 그가 두려움에 소스라쳤을 때 마찬가지로 그것의 무게의 기억이 되살아나게 되었다.

Sans s’en apercevoir, Monsieur Linh vient de poser la main sur le banc en face du Parc. Celui où la veille il s’était reposé. Celui où cet homme un peu gros, aimable et souriant lui avait parlé et avait mis la main sur son épaule. Il s’assied et soudain lui revient le souvenir de cet homme, de sa bouche qui paraissait dévorer les cigarettes, de ses yeux à la fois graves et rieurs, de la mélodie de sa voix qui prononçait des mots qu’il ne comprenait pas, et le souvenir du poids de sa main également, lorsqu’il la posa sur l’épaule, et qu’il tressaillit de peur, avant de se sentir honteux d’avoir ainsi réagi.

Without realising, Monsieur Linh has just laid his hand on the bench opposite the Park. The one where he had sat and taken a rest the previous day. The one where that rather plump, kindly and smiling man had placed his hand on his shoulder. He sits down, and all of a sudden the memory of that man comes back to him, of his mouth which seemed to devour the cigarettes, of his eyes that were at once serious and laughing, of his tuneful voice that uttered words he did not understand, and also the memory of the weight of his hand, when he placed it on his shoulder, and he flinched in fear, before feeling ashamed at having reacted in that way.
