Tyrone 'The Bone' Proctor belong to the first generation of Waackers that came out in L.A. in the early's 70's. He was a member of the 'Outrageous Waack Dancers' with Jeffrey Daniel, Jody Watley, Sharon Hill, Cleveland Moses Jr,and Kirt Washington. Tyrone is one of the last of the pioneers who named this dance style. This is a great honour an opportunity to spend some time with him to clarify some points about waacking while answering a few questions.

Tyrone 'The Bone' Proctor 는 1970년대 초 L.A에서 알렸졌던 Waackers의 첫 번째 세대에 속한다. 그는 Jeffrey Daniel, Jody Watley, Sharon Hill, Cleveland Moses Jr,and Kirt Washington와 같이 'Outrageous Waack Dancers' 의 멤버였다. Barcelona Dance: 'How, when and where did the 'Waacking' style was born?‘

Tyrone: 'Waacking came from the gay community in the early's 70's on the West Coast and it evolved from what the gay community was doing all along. At this time no one could imagine that this dance would be so popular as it is today. The dance was mainly danced by The Black and Spanish Community. It evolved from two things, Drag Queens performing, and Still Pictures and Musicals of old Females Stars from the 1920's to the 60's icons like: Greta Garbo's, Rita Haywards and Marilyn Monroe to name a few.

Tyrone : 왁킹은 70년대 초 미국 웨스트 코스트의 동성애자 사회에서 나왔고, 이것은 동성애자 사회에서 내내 해오는 것에서 진화하였다. 이때에 아무도 이 댄스가 오늘날에 와서 매우 인기를 있을 거라고 생각하지 못했다.. 이 댄스는 주로 흑인과 스페니시 사회에서 추었다. 여장차림의 남자 동성애자의 춤과 1920년에서 60년대 아이콘과 같은 (두 세가지 예를 들면 Greta Garbo's, Rita Haywards and Marilyn Monroe)  오래된 여자 스타들의 스틸사진과 음악 이 두 가지에서 진화하였다.

 The word from what I remember, came from me when I was describing the movement, I always told the people that when you wanted to move, you had to 'Waack' your arm, Jeffrey Daniels then told me that we had to put 2 a 's instead of one because we did't want to get it confused with the word 'wack' in english, means something that is not good. This way with 2 a 's we gave this word could have an all other meaning.

내가 기억하는 것으로서 그 단어(Waack)는 내가 그 동작을 묘사하였을 때 나에게서 나왔다.

Early 70s in the gay clubs were: The Paradise Ballroom, Gino's 1, Gino's 2, The Other Side, The Gas Station to name a few, where lots of dancers could be seen doing the style that will be called later Waacking or Punking. Some of these dancers would appear on Soul Train's. The dance moves you would see in the clubs would always end up on 'Soul Train'.

To name some of the first generation where: Lamont Peterson, Blinky, Micky, Andrew Frank, David Vincent, Arthur, Tinker, John Pickett, Gary Keys, Dewayne Hargrave, Billy Goodson, Billy Starr, Lonnie (gymnastics), Abe Clark, Michael Angelo and many, many more...'.

70년대 초반 게이 클럽을 서너 가지 예를 들면 The Paradise Ballroom, Gino's 1, Gino's 2, The Other Side, The Gas Station을 들수 있는데 많은 댄서들이 나중에 Waacking or Punking 이라 불려지는 그 스타일을 하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 댄서들 중의 몇 명은 소울 트레인에 서게 되었다. 당신이 클럽에서 보았던 그 댄스가 소울 트레인으로 옮겨갔다. 최초의 세대들의 몇 명의 이름은 Lamont Peterson, Blinky, Micky, Andrew Frank, David Vincent, Arthur, Tinker, John Pickett, Gary Keys, Dewayne Hargrave, Billy Goodson, Billy Starr, Lonnie (gymnastics), Abe Clark, Michael Angelo 등등 매우 많아서리...

Barcelona Dance : Punking은 무엇인가?

Tyrone: 'To make a long story short, punking is a straight person's version of Waacking. Outside of the locker Tony Basil, there were a few straight people going to gay clubs and literally sit and watch them do the dance and while they were doing that it enabled them to perfecionate the dance themselves.

Tyrone : 긴 이야기를 짧게 하면 이성애자의 왁킹 버전이다. 락커 토니 바실 이외에 몇 명의 이성애자들이 게이 클럽에 가서 정말로 앉아서 그 댄서를 추는 것을 보고 그들 자신이 그 댄스를 완벽하게 할 수 있을 때까지 하였다.

There was a difference in the way the dancers would dress: About the dress, Andrew would wear big oversized Jackets to add more movement to Waacking. Arthur would like to wear high boots with his pants inside the boots. Tinker would like to wear tight shirts with short sleeves roll up or just cut off. The Women of Soul train would wear high heels and full skirts so when they turn the skirt would fly up to the beat.

댄서들이 옷을 입는 방식에 차이점이 있었다. 드레스에 대해 Andrew는 왁킹에 좀더 동작들을 다하기 위해 특대 사이즈의 쟈켓을 입었다. Arthur는 부츠안에 바지를 넣을 수 있는 높은 부츠를 입는 것을 좋아했다. Tinker는 짧게 소매를 올리거 짤라버린 타이트한 셔츠를 입기를 좋아했다. 소울 트레인의 여성들은 그들이 음악에 맞춰 턴을 하면 스커트가 올라가도록 하이힐과 긴 스커트를 입었다.

Punking, the dancers would dress up like in the 40’s with high wasted baggy pans, tight shirt with big hats. Also the Waacking style was a lot more emotional. Punking is smooth and precision orientated.

펑킹 댄서들은 1940년대 매우 낡고 헐렁한 바지와 타이트한 셔츠, 그리고 큰 모자같은 것들을 입었다. 왁킹 스타일은 좀더 감성적이고, 펑킹은 매끄럽고 정밀한 경향이 있다.

Tyrone: 'Many people think that Waacking started with Locking and this is not true. You have to understand the climate back then, Waacking was danced by people who were not socially tolerated, it came with a different music style: the Disco. The Waacking scene was underground and nothing came out mostly because people would be labelled as 'gay'.

Tyrone : 많은 사람들은 왁킹이 locking과 함께 시작했다고 생각하는데 이것은 사실이 아니다. 당신은 그때 풍토를 이해해야만 한다. 왁킹은 사회적으로 용인될 수 없었던 사람들이 추었고, 다른 음악 스타일(디스코)이 있다. 왁킹신은 언더그라운드이고 사람들이 ‘게이“라고 딱지매겼기 때문에 대부분 나오질 못했다. 

Tyrone believes That when the Gay Community abandoned Waacking in the late 70's that same time people were being introduce to a dance called Locking and some of the people who had been teaching Locking were also teaching Punking at the same time.

Tyrone 은 동성애자 사회가 70년대말 왁킹을 버렸을 때 같은 시기 사람들은 락킹이라 불리는 댄스를 소개했고, 락킹을 가르치는 사람들의 몇 명이 같은 시기에 punking을 가르쳤기 때문이라고 생각한다.

 All my respect and love to Don Campbell for creating the 'Locking style' that had such a prolific influence on the dance scene. The Lockers were all straight guys but they had respect for gay people. I admire them all of them. Actually Scooby-Doo taught me how to Lock.

댄스신에 많은 영향을 미쳤던 락킹 스타일을 만들어낸 돈 캠벨락에게 나의 모든 존경과 사랑을 드립니다. The Lockers는 모두 이성애자였으나 모든 동성애자들을 존경하였다. 나는 그들모두를 감탄하며 바라본다. 실제로 스쿠비두는 나에게 락킹하는 법을 가르쳐주었다.

 Thanks to Toni Basil, dancer like: Andrew, Lonnie, Billy and Tinker at Gino's were so good that they ended up dancing with celebrities like Diana Ross. Some of the members of "The Outrageous Waack Dancers". were in the group "Shalamar", Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley.

토니 바실과 같은 Andrew, Lonnie, Billy 그리고 Gino(클럽)의 Tinker은 Diana Ross와 같은 명사들과 함께 춤추게 되어 너무 좋았다. "The Outrageous Waack Dancers"의 멤버중의 몇 명은 그룹 "Shalamar"였다. Jeffrey Daniel 과 Jody Watley.

Tyrone: 'The first one was when I arrived in L.A. , it was on Tuesday September the 22 1972 at 10h22pm, it was milestone in my life. As soon as I arrived I was immediately become friends with the Soul Train gang. I met Little Jo Chism who took me to all the clubs and to the Paradise Ballroom in L.A. where I first saw "Posing" dancing.

Tyrone : 첫 번째는 내가 로스앤젤레스에 도착했을 때이다. 그날은 1972년 9월 22일 화요일 오후 10시 22분이었다. 내 인생에 있어서 획기적인 사건이었다. 나는 도착하자마자 소울 트레인 갱과 바로 친구가 되었다. 나는 나를 로스앤젤레스의  Paradise Ballroom(게이클럽)과 모든 클럽에 데려다 준 Little Jo Chism을 만났고, 거기서 나는 “Posing”이라는 춤을 처음 보았다.

The second high light of my life was to have the chance to enter Soul Train as a dancer the same year and also to tour with Don Cornelius and the Soul Train gang with famous groups such as Eddie Kendricks, The 'Whispers and the Monents'.

내 삶의 두 번째 하이라이트는 그 해에 댄서로서 소울 트레인에 들어가는 기회를 가졌다는 것이고, 또한 Eddie Kendricks처럼 유명한 그룹들이 있는 소을 트레인 갱과  Don Cornelius 와 함께 투어를 가졌다는 것이다.  

 I would like to say that thanks to Soul Train because many dance styles came out to public such as Locking, Popping and Waacking and all this was made popular from this one show.

나는 예를 들어 Locking, Popping and Waacking과 같은 많은 댄스 스타일이 대중에게 알려지고 이 한 쇼에세 대중화되게 한 소울 트레인에게 감사하다고 말하고 싶다.

 The dance moves of John Travolta in Saturday Night fever were directly taken from the Soul Train Show (Locking and Waacking).

“토요일 밤의 열기”에서의 존 트라볼타의 댄스 동작은 소울트레인 쇼 (락킹과 왁킹)에서 직접 가져온 것이다.

 Another highlight of my life as dancer was to be meet Sharon Hill as my dancing partner we won a national contests dancing together. Also another highlight was to be able to travel to Japan with the 'Outrageous Waack Dancers' including Tammy, Cleveland Moses, Kirtland Washington, Sherry Green and myself.

내 삶의 다른 하이라이트는 댄서로서 나의 댄싱 파트어로 Sharon Hill을 만난 것이고 우리들은 전국 댄싱 콘테스트에서 우승했다. 또한 다른 하이라이트는 Tammy, Cleveland Moses, Kirtland Washington, Sherry Green 그리고 나를 포함하는 'Outrageous Waack Dancers'와 함께 일본으로 여행을 갈 수 있었다는 것이다.

 At this time only I think only "The Lockers" and a group called "Something Special" had been there. My other following great experience was to go to New York and to be part of a group called "Breed of Motion" which was the first "Waacking" singing group including the late great Willie Ninja.

이 당시 나는 “The Lockers”와 “Something Special”이라고 불리는 그룹과 거기에 있었다. 나의 다른 최고의 경험은 뉴욕에 간 것과 고인이 된 Willie Ninja를 포함하는 최초의 "Waacking" singing group “Breed of Motion”의 일원이 되었다는 것이다.

 After that, Jodie Watley called me in N.Y asking me to do the music video in Paris called 'Still a Thrill' and that was actually the first music video ever to incorporate "Waacking". Then from there I had the opportunity to choreograph another music video from Taylor Dane 'Tell It To My Heart' which is the first video ever to have Voguing in it (1987).

그 이후 Jodie Watley가 뉴욕에서 나를 불렀고, 'Still a Thrill'라는 파리에서의 뮤직비디오 만드는 것을 나에게 요청했다. 그리고 그것은 실제로 왁킹을 포함시킨 최초의 뮤직 비디오였다. 거기서부터 나는 최초의 보깅을 포함하는 Taylor Dane 'Tell It To My Heart'의 또 다른 뮤직비디오를 안무하는 기회를 가졌다.(1987년)

Barcelona Dance: 소울 트레인에 나올 때 캐스팅은 어떻게 계획되었나?

Tyrone: 'The were auditions in a recreation center in L.A on a Saturday. The teen coordinator at this time was called Pam Brown, she would come with Don Cornellius (the Creator and Host) a week before the TV show and would pick up some dancers passing through a Soul Train line set up for the audition.

토요일 로스엔젤레스의 오락장(레크리에이션 센터)에서의 오디션이었다. 그때 10대 코디네이터는 Pam Brown이었다. 그녀는 TV 쇼 일주일전에 Don Cornellius (제작 및 진행자)와 같이 왔었고, 오디션을 통해 몇 명의 댄스들을 선택하였다.

 
The people who were selected would be listed on the TV studio's guest list. If your name was not on the list you couldn't get into the dance studio. We taped the show one weekend a month they would tape 2 shows on the Saturday and 2 on Sunday.

선택된 사람들은 TV 스튜디오 내객 명부에 실렸다. 만약 당신의 이름이 그 리스트에 없으면 댄스 스튜디오 안으로 들어갈 수 없었다. 우리들은 한 달 주말에 한번 쇼를 녹화앴고, 그들은 토요일에 2개, 일요일에 2개의 쇼를 녹화하였다.

Tyrone: 'This is actually Don Cornelius from Soul Train who called me 'The Bone' because I was very thin at this time.

Tyrone: 'The first was Posing, I still remember them playing the track "Papa was a rolling Stone", on each 'boom' of the track the dancers were doing a different Pose, you could see all these dancers on Posing, this was phenomenal, then Waacking then Voguing.

Tyrone: 맨 먼저는 Posing이었다. 나는 "Papa was a rolling Stone" 이 흘러나올 때 그들을 기억한다. 그 음악의 ‘boom’하는 음에 맞춰 댄서들이 다른 자세(pose)를 하는 것이었다. 당신은 모든 이러한 댄서들이 포징하는 것을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 이것은 경이로웠다. 그다음이 왁킹, 그 다음이 보깅이다.

 They all have a common point, they come from the gay community. On the straight community you would have the Funk and Soul which evolving to the Hip Hop meanwhile on the gay community you would have Waacking with Disco that was popularised in the early 70s it also evolving to Voguing with House Music the early 80s. Both styles had syllables that were seen in the gay community before they were set as dance forms.

그들은 모두 공통점을 가지고 있다. 그들은 동성애자 사회에서 나왔다. 이성애자 사회에서 힙합으로 발전으로 Funk와 Soul이 있었던 동안 동성애자 사회에서는 70년대 대중화된 디스코와 함께 왁킹이 있었고, 이것은 또한 80년대 하우스음악과 함께 보깅으로 발전한다. 두 개의 스타일은 댄스 유형으로 정해지기 전에 동성애자 사회에서 볼 수 있었던 음절를 가졌다. 

 The big differente between Disco and House is the BPM (Beat Per Minute) is that Disco was a lot faster (aprox. 127-145bpm) than House (aprox. 112-121bpm) and also the content is different, in the Disco you have a lot of hornes and violins and other instruments that you interprete with the dance. Voguing is more concentrating, more competitive, angular and a less emotional.

디스코와 하우스의 큰 차이점은 BPM(Beat Per Minute)인데 디스코는 하우스보다 빠르고 또한 내용이 다르다. 디스코에는 많은 나팔(혼)과 바이올린 그리고 다른 악기들이 있고 춤과 함께 연주된다. 보킹은 더 집중되어 있고, 더 경쟁적이고, 각이 지며, 덜 감성적이다.

# BPM : 음악의 속도를 숫자로 표시한 것으로, 그 수가 클수록 빠르다. 일반적으로 비피엠의 시간 단위는 1분이다

 Voguing was popularized through the medium of Super Models such as Iman, Beverly Johnson, Janet Dickinson , Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, you had all these girls that would be on a runaway walking up and down. The gay community would emulate that on the street, pretending to be these super models. The Egyptian culture had a big influence on vogueing. Also remember of Willie Ninja that was watching a lot of Kung Fu movies and would apply some of the moves in his Vogue style of dancing.

보깅은 Iman, Beverly Johnson, Janet Dickinson , Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland 와 같은 슈퍼 모델들의 매체를 통해 대중화되었다. 동성애자 사회에서는 길거리에서 모방하고, 이런 슈퍼모델인처험 행동하였다. 이집트 문화가 보깅에 큰 영향을 주었다. 또한 Willie Ninja의 기억은 수많은 쿵푸 영화들을 보고 그의 보그 스타일에 영화의 어떤 부분을 적용하였다.

Barcelona Dance: 'How did you start teaching Waacking?‘
Barcelona Dance: “왁킹은 어떻게 가르치기 시작했나요?”

Tyrone: 'It's actually Jeffrey Daniels who initially told me that I should start teaching Waacking when he was in Osaka Japan in 1991. Then Brian Green kept asking me to teach Waacking. I was reluctant but he insisted so I started doing it. I am one of the last of the living pioneers and with the Resurgence of Waacking. I am extremely lucky and honoured to have met in my lifetime some of the greatest dancers in human history.

왁킹을 가르치는 것을 처음 나에게 말한 것은 Jeffrey Daniels이고 그가 1991년 일본 오사카에 있을 때였다. 그리고 Brian Green 이 계속해서 왁킹을 가르치라고 나에게 요청했다. 나는 내키지 않았지만 그는 내가 그것을 시작할 것을 강력히 주장했다. 나는 왁킹의 부활과 함께 살아있는 개척자들의 마지막 한 사람이다. 나는 내 인생에 있어서 인류역사상 최고의 댄서들과 만날 수 있었던 것이 매우 운이 좋고 영광스럽다.

Tyrone: 'I appreciate that, but I can't take credit for it. It's very difficult say who created Waacking because it came from different minds and it was a variation of different styles. I put a name 'Waack' so people could understand the movement. My part is to secure dancers such as Lamont Peterson, Blinky, Micky, Andrew Frank, David Vincent, Arthur, Tinker, John Pickett, Gary Keys, Dewayne Hargrave, Billy Goodson, Billy Starr, Lonnie (gymnastics), Abe Clark, Michael Angelo and many, many more, because many are no longer with us.

 I want everybody to know who were the real Pioneers in this dance form called "Waacking" I just loved the dance and loved to see young people dancing it. I just can say that I am honored and humble that people would remember me that I was there. But you also have people like Anna Sanchez, Angel Pioneer and Toni Basil who came a little bit after me but still are a valuable source of information on Waacking and Punking.'

나는 모든 사람들이 왁킹이라고 불리는 이 댄스 유형의 진정한 개척자가 누구인지 알기를 바란다. 나는 단지 춤을 사랑하고 젊은 사람들이 이것을 추는 것을 보기를 종아한다. 나는 내가 거기에 있었기에 사람들이 나를 기억한다는 것으로 영광스럽고 보잘 것 없다고 말할 수 있다. 그러나 당신은 내 조금 뒤에 나온 Anna Sanchez, Angel Pioneer and Toni Basil과 같은 사람들이 있고, 이들은 여전히 왁킹과 펑킹에 대한 가치있는 정보의 원천이다.

Tyrone: I always tell people that they need to follow their dream because their dream should set them free. Aus, Shake, Eva, they are like my babies, I love you guys! Just keep growing what you're doing!

​어제 처음으로 시작한 스트릿댄스 역사 연구 모임은 9명의 댄서들이 참여한 가운데 잘 마무리했답니다.

스트릿댄스역사모임은  ​스트릿댄스를 하고 댄서나 스트릿댄스에 대해 관심이 있는 사람들이 스트릿댄스의 역사에 대해 함께 공부해보자는 취지입니다. 춤을 추면서 이 춤이 어떻게 만들어졌으며 어떻게 발전해가고 있는지 알아보는 것 또한 춤을 추는 댄서들에게 필요한 일이라고 생각합니다.

앞으로 전문댄서로서 학교나 학원에서 아이들과 만나게 될 날이 있겠지요. 그리고 일반 사람들에게도 설명을 해야할 일들도 생길 겁니다.그때 여러분들은 누구한테 들은 이야기를 이야기할 것인가? 아니면 내 몸으로 체득한 나의 춤처럼 본인 스스로가 역사에 대한 이해와 그 근거들을 가지고 설명할 것인가는 분명히 차이가 있다고 생각합니다.

이런 필요가 이 모임을 열게 된 취지입니다.

그리고 우리는 이 춤을 너무나 사랑합니다.!!!! 그래서 더 알고 싶은 거겠지요!!!

​함께 모인 우리들은 어떻게 공부할 것인가? 에 대해 이야기해보았습니다.

​아직까지 우리가 어떤 방식으로 역사를 공부해보질 못했기에 제가 하는 방식을 소개하는 것으로 첫번쩨 모임을 시작하였습니다.

1. 스트릿댄스 역사​ 어떻게 공부할 것인가?

    (1) 스트릿댄스 역사 여행을 위한 지도가 필요하다​

         우리가 길을 찾기 위해선 정확한 주소와 나침반 등이 필요한다. 우리는 정확한 주소를 모르니 대강의 약도를 준비해야 할 것이다.

          그래서 제가 선택한 방법은 대강의 약도를 만들어보는 것입니다.

Waacking의 창시자인 Tyrone Proctor를 포함한 이런 클럽 댄서들은 Marilyn Monroe와 같은 1940년대의 글래머한 여성들의 사진들로부터 영감을 받았다. Waacking은 양식화된 자세와 음악의 비트에 맞춘 빠른 팔 동작들로 구성되어 있다. 오늘날 Waacking은 힙합댄스의 중요한 부분이다. Waacking은 MTV의 ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’와 같은 TV 시리즈와 유명한 힙합 크루들에게 관심을 얻어왔다.             이것은 마치 여러분들이 사랑하는 춤을 추다보면 본인도 모르게 그 춤을 여러분들의 몸이 체득하여 자신의 것이 되는 과정과 비슷

            하다고 생각하면 될 것입니다.         

          - 다음주 수요일까지 왁킹에 대해 알아본 여러분들의 경험을 다른 사람들과 공유하고, 일아보는 과정에서 생기게 된 궁금점들을 풀

             어놓는 방식으로 진행합니다.
