Geneses Chapter 9-
After the Great Flood
The Text from https://www.bible.com/bible/111/GEN.9.NIV
God’s Covenant With Noah
1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. (The same blessings confirmed again. 1:28)
2 The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands.(Mankind is the ruler over God's creation.)
3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. (Humans were allowed to eat meat. 1:29)
4 “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. (But the lifeblood was prohibited.)
5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. (All lives are belong to God. So we must value and cherish them.)
6 “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. (Mankind inherited the non-negotiable divine nature of God.)
7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.” (We must cherish and prosper the life which was made after the image and likeness of God.)
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him:
9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you- the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you- every living creature on earth. (God commits to Himself for the sake of His creation.)
11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” (God will not destroy the earth with flood anymore. Confer 2Pe. 3:6-7)
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:
13 I have set my rainbow(1) in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,
15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.
16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.” (The rainbow is the sign of His covenant to the mankind.)
The Sons of Noah
18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth. (Noah's three sons will be the fathers of all people.)
20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard.(2)
21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. (Noah indulged in his product too much, so brought himself to shame.)
22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. (Ham didn't cover Noah's shame.)
23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked. (Shem and Japheth covered their father's shame to keep his dignity.)
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.” (Noah rebuked Ham with curse.)
26 He also said, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
27 May God extend Japheth’s territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.” (But praise and blessings for Shem and Japheth. Each deserves accordingly; praise or blame, blessing or curse. We'd better reflect ourselves rather than to judge others hastily.)
28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years.
29 Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died. (Noah lived 350 years more after the flood, so 950 years total.)
(1, Rainbow) (AI)
A rainbow is a colorful arc in the sky created by sunlight passing through water droplets, which causes the light to bend (refract), reflect off the back of the droplets, and separate into its component colors (dispersion). They are observed opposite the Sun, primarily after rain, with the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
Key Scientific Concepts:
Refraction (Bending): Light travels slower in water than air, causing it to bend upon entering the raindrop.
Reflection (Bouncing): The light hits the back of the droplet and reflects back.
Dispersion (Separating): The white sunlight separates into its component wavelengths, creating the spectrum of colors.
Angle: The light emerges at a maximum angle of roughly
Key Facts About Rainbows:
Optical Phenomenon: Rainbows are not physically located in a specific spot in the sky; they are optical illusions that depend on the observer's position, as noted in this article on the "Twinkl" website and this article on the "HowStuffWorks" website.
Order of Colors: Red is on the outer edge, while violet is on the inner edge because each color bends at a slightly different angle.
Double Rainbows: Sometimes a second, fainter rainbow appears outside the main one, featuring reversed colors, which occurs when light reflects twice inside the raindrops, says this article on the "Dictionary.com" website.
Etymology: The word comes from the Old English renboga, meaning "rain bow," according to this article on the "Etymonline" website.
Common Rainbow Colors (VIBGYOR):
Red (outer)- Orange- Yellow- Green- Blue- Indigo- Violet (inner)
The Light Spectrum
The light spectrum, or visible spectrum, is the small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum detectable by the human eye, typically ranging from ~380 to 750 nanometers (nm). It comprises colors from violet (shortest wavelength) to red (longest wavelength), often remembered as ROYGBIV, which are separated when white light passes through a prism.
(2, Noah a Man of the Soil) (AI)
In Genesis 9:20, calling Noah "a man of the soil" (ish ha-adama) signifies his role as a pioneering farmer and second "Adam," tasked with cultivating the Earth after the flood. It highlights his deep connection to the land, representing a transition from the crisis of the flood to restoration, agricultural civilization, and the cultivation of the first vineyard.
Key Significance of the Phrase:
A Second Adam: Like Adam, Noah is associated with the land (soil), but unlike Adam, he successfully cultivates it after God lifts the curse placed on it, bringing rest and comfort from agricultural labor.
The First Vintner: The description directly precedes his planting of a vineyard, marking him as the initiator of viniculture and marking a new era of earthly life.
Connection to "Rest": Noah's name means "rest" or "comfort." As a "man of the soil," he fulfills his father Lamech’s hope that he would bring relief from the hard toil caused by the curse on the ground.
Symbol of Restoration: While Adam's relationship with the soil resulted in curses, Noah’s role as a "man of the soil" suggests a restoring of a productive, stable relationship with the land and the beginning of a new chapter for humanity.
Some scholars also view this term, occurring in Genesis 9:20, as highlighting that he was the first to return to agricultural work after the deluge.
The Pre-Flood Civilization Perished (AI)
According to Biblical tradition, Lamech's civilization (the lineage of Cain) was completely destroyed by the Flood. Lamech, who embodied the increasing violence and corruption of his era, did not survive the catastrophe. His descendants—pioneers in metalworking, music, and pastoralism—perished with that civilization, leaving only the descendants of Seth (through Noah) to repopulate the earth.
Destruction: The civilization initiated by Cain, further developed by Lamech's family, was completely wiped out by the floodwater.
The "Line of Cain": Lamech was the fifth-generation descendant of Cain. His descendants was described as having a culture of escalating violence (e.g., his "Song of the Sword") which likely prompted the destruction.
No Survivors: The Biblical narrative suggests that this entire antediluvian (before the flood) society, with its advancements in metallurgy and musical arts, was destroyed due to the wickedness of mankind.
Contrasting Lineage: While Lamech’s descendants perished, the lineage of Noah (a different Lamech), who walked with God, was saved through the ark.
In short, the civilization associated with Lamech—Cain's legacy of "sword," technology, and violence—did not survive the Flood, and that specific societal line was completely extinguished.
