13. Cheon-Hwa-Dong-ln(Hexafeam 13 : Fellowship with Men/ Conciliation).....7
▣ [Nine at Line 5 (九五,구오)] :
Fellowship with men ; first crying and weeping, afterwards laughing.
When a great army overcomes, they meet with each other.
[Explanation]
[Nine at Line 5 (九五,구오)] In uniting and associating with many people,
one cries and laments at first, but laughs in the end.
When a great army encounters each other, it will overcome the opponent.
[Commentary]
First, the ruler's position caannot show favor to any specific person, group, ministry,
or political party, though there may be groups or a ruling party that support the king.
However, because the ruler must be in a position to create national unity and broad
solidarity [同人,동인 -Dong-in], at first, one suffers an immense number of difficulties,
and only later do negotiations take place everywhere,
fostering a mood of dialogue and reconciliation that gives rise to laughter [後笑,후소].
This is because massive behind-the-scence work, negotiations, and mediation followed.
This creayes an opportunity to overcome challenges from the position of a father
with a broad heart that can embrace all under heaven and as a Great Master
bringing people to the difficult table of dialogue for a meeting [相遇,상우].
Therefore, in seeking fellowship (同人,동인), weeping and crying at first was because
one treated subordinates with excessive rigidity and firmness...
...The reason a greaat army encounters each other is that they resolved difficult issues
among themselves through words.
Xiang Zhuan :
The early part og Fellowship is because of centrality and straightforwardness, it means
overcoming through words].
Regarding 'Dae-sa-geuk(大師克,대사극)', which has various interpretations,
Wang Bi said it means mobilizing a great army to win,
while Dongpo stated that a great army is mobilized to attack each other.
Dasan explained that since the full line-transformation of (全變,전변) Dong-in (同人,동인)
becomes Ji-su-sa (地水師,지수사 - Hexagram 7 : The Army/ Field Forces),
it is natural for the eldest son to lead the army [長子師師,장자사사] and win with a large force.
With a slightly different nuance, Asan interpreted that line 2 and line 5 must unite
with a solemn sense of fighting a great war to maintain dignity and authority (威儀,위의),
thereby preventing other Yang(陽,양) lines from daring to covet line 2.
However, because line 5 cannot meet line 2 due to line 3 and line 4, line 5 wails bitterly.
It is also seen as swearing an all-out war against them [大師克,대사극].
On the other hand, Ji-uk considers it a legitimate mobilization of troops by line 5.
Since line 2 is the main line of Dong-in (同人,동인) through gentle, central,
and correct quslites, it cannot help but form a proper correspondence with line 5.
This is what is called a sincere fellowship (同人,동인) that responds while seemingly
not responding.
Yet, because line 3 and line 4 block the way in between, wouldn't line 5 have wept,
wailed, and used a great army to fight each other?
Since line 5 is also a strong, central, and correct supreme commander,
line 5 wins the battle and achieves the meeting.
At this point, let us listen to Seok Ji-hyeong's O-wi-gui-gam(오위귀감) :
"Your servant respectfully examines the situation :
[Nine at Line 5] As the Son of Heaven must achieve greatn fellowship with all people
under heaven, he cannot be privately close to a single individual.
If we leave aside the designated positions of ruler and minister to discuss a state
where line 2 and line 5 directly respond to each other, line 3 and line 4 stand it the way,
causing unbearable frustration and leading to weeping;
however, since they are united out of righteousness/duty, they will ultimately unite,
leading to laughter after crying.
Winning with a great army to meet each other is inherently so in principle ;
Confucius said, 'Their sharpness cuts through steel [
and 'Their fragrance is like orchids
Even if there are hard obstacles the relationship,
and those words are so profoundly beautiful that they spread far and wide."
"This can be reflected upon in the light of today's affairs,
so l humbly pray that Your Majesty will take to heart the meaning that lies beyond the words."
Suhyeon(壽峴,수현) is throwing a Zen dialogue, asking to carve out the meaning beyond words.
As a historical allusion, as seen in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian :
Basic Annals (史記本紀,사기본기) and Hereditary Families (史記世家,사기세가),
this can be viewed as the situation of the great battle of Muye (牧野,목야)
under King Wu of Zhou.
"Dae-sa(大師,대사) is seen as the King's army, specifically the two armies of King Wu( 武王,무왕) and King Zhou of Shang (紂王,주왕) that encounntered each other at Muye (牧野,목야).
Although King Wu took the lead, flanked by Taigong Wang, Wang, Yeosang, and King Wu's
younger brothers Dukke of Zhou(Dan), Duke of Shao, and Duke of Bi,
his forces numbered no more than 300 chariots and 45,000 men,
though they were a brave army.
On the other hand, King Zhou's army numbered about 700,000,
but they were mostly prisoners of war, and the people of Shang were a useless,
disorderly rabble whose bones had mwlted away in decadent pleasure.
Therefore, it is also viewed as the accoint where the army of King Zhou,
having lost its spirit to fight, was suppressed by King Wu's army
allowing King Wu's army to achieve victory
Regarding the phrase "[先號咷而後笑,선호조이후소 - First weeping and wailing, afterwards laughing] above, Confucius emphasized righteousness/ duty in Chapter 8 of the Xici
(Appended Phrases) and left a famous, timeless passage :
"In achieving fellowship (Dong-in/同人,동인), sometimes one goes out,
sometimes one stays behind ; sometimes one remains silent, and sometimes one speaks
Thus, if two people become one in heart and mind,
a surprising power will generate―one so sharp that it cuts through steel
이인동심기리단금] : and thewords coming from the mouths of those united in one mind will
carry a beautiful fragrance like orchids
Therefore, Line 5 must possess a mind seeking unity with a single heart and a broad
capacity worthy of a Great Master (大師,대사) that embraces alll into one.
Only then will meetings of beautiful Great Unity (大同,대동) and grand compromise
take place everywhere.
Terms such as 金蘭之交(금란지교 - friendship as firm as metal and fragrant as orchids),
金蘭之契(금란지계 - a bond as firm as metai and fragrant as orchids),
金蘭契帖(금란계첩 - a roster/booklet of sworn friends ),
金蘭亭(금란정 - Geumran Pavilion), and 金蘭簿(금란부 - register of intimate friends)
all originate from this passage.
The "Geumran" of Lee Jeong-gu(이정구), the "Dongsim-ri"(the principle of one mind)
of Lee Min-gu (이민구),
the "Gi-ri-dan-geum"(sharpness cutting through metal) of Lee Jung-taek (이중택),
the teaching of 'Dongsim"(one mind) by Nam Hyo-won (남효원),
the spirit as firm as "Geumran" by Cha Cheon-ro (차천로),
the"Do-hyeop-geum -ran" by Hwang Jun-Yang (황준양),
and the fragrant virtue like orchids by Han Kang―all of these sing the pwaises
of the beauty of Geumran (金蘭,금란).
