13. Cheon-Hwa-Dong-ln(Hexafeam 13 : Fellowship with Men/ Conciliation).....8
▣ [Top Nine(上九,상구)] : Fellowship with men in the suburbs(outskirts/sacrifice) ; no regret.
[Explanation]
[Top Nine(上九,상구)] Form fellowship in the distant outskirts sacrifice [郊祭,교제],
so there is no regret.
[Commentary]
Being neither correct (不正,부정) nor central (不中,부중) and lacking a proper
line-correspondence (正應,정응), [Top Nine] is in a position far removed from
Dong-in(同人,동인 - Fellowship) which attempts great unity through dialogue and compromise.
From this position, forming an association with the beautiful Line 2 (the host of the sacrifice,
the people, or the one holding power/interests) is something one dare not even dream
of or mention.
Thus, Confucius also commented : "Forming fellowship in the distant outskirts means one
is in no position to assert one's will
Dongpa(Su Shi) also interprets this as 'Failing to attain one's will (志得,지득)",
just like Confucius.
Things that can abide together with Geon(乾,건) are naturally very few,
and as [Top Nine] of Dong-in(同人,동인) happens to occupy the very top of Geon(乾,건),
being together is even more difficult.
Since it is not a forced or unseemly association, there is no regret (後悔.후회),
but as there is no one to share fellowship with, one cannot attain one's aspiration/will.
This is a clear and insightful interpretation characteristic of Dongpa.
when practicing Dong-in(同人,동인 -Fellowship), one must act according to the proper Dao.
However, circling around the outakirts while only blaming the times and others makes
the world turn its back on you.
Therefore, for an outsider (方外者,방외자) who dwells in seclusion in the far-off outskirts
[同人于郊,동인우교], there is no blame (无悔,무회 - no regret).
However, for an outsider who seeks to innovate the world, active action is required ;
for a petty person, it would be ominous, with no matched partner.
Yet, right now, going out into the outskirts to fish, putting water in a stone kettle,
gazing up at white clouds, and being in fellowship(同人,동인) with the world is far better.
Jeongieo(정저) and Geol-ig(걸익) in the 'Mija(미자)' chapter of the Analects (論語,논어)
are examples of such people.
In Erya (爾雅,이아), it is said that 'Gyo(郊,교 - outskirts/suburbs) refers to the land
100 li outside the royal capital.
Gathering people in such a far-off borderland is difficult,
so if one waits with patience until the people's hearts respond, there will be no regret.
Thus, even Confucius stated that he had not yet attained Heaven's will.
In terms of historical allusions, it also refers to the politics of borderland pacification
and inclusive governance implemented immediately after King Wu's dynastic revolution.
King Wu's revolutionary army captured the Shang capital,
but disturbances refusing King Wu continued in the frontier regions.
Therefore, King Wu spent three years suppressing disturbances and rebellions,
pacifying and embracing them.
In this process, he conquered 99 small states and subjugated 652 feudal lords.
This shows the formidable difficulties of 同人于郊(동인우교 -Fellowship in the outskirts).
Additionally, Dasan viewed 'Gyo (郊,교)' as '郊天祭(교천제 - outskirts sacrifice to Heaven)'.
As the king of Geon(乾,건, ☰ - Heaven) offers a bull of Li(离,리, ☲ - Fire) as a sacrifice,
he performs 郊天祭(교천제 - suburbs sacrifice to Heaven) .
Therefore, the Line Text(爻辭,효사) was interpreted as " When residing together with
the people who perform sacrifices to Heaven, there is no blame".
