오늘은 라이팅 (스피킹)에서 특히 중요하게 사용될 수 있는 연결어 두 가지에 대해서 알아볼게요.
In Spite of/ Despite
More or less every time you use although you can also use in spite of and despite. e.g.
: although를 사용하는 곳에는 항상 in spite of/despite 두 가지를 대체해서 사용할 수가 있습니다.
Although he loved cats, he didn’t like dogs.
Despite his love of cats he didn’t like dogs.
Is there a difference between in spite of and despite?
Not really. They mean exactly the same thing and are used in the same way. It’s worth knowing them both so that you can use them both. It’s nice to have a little variation in your writing.
: 두 가지 표현에서 의미상의 차이는 특별히 없습니다만, 섞어서 사용한다면 라이팅에서 약간의 변화를 줄 수가 있습니다.
What grammar do you need?
Well, there are two or three basic variations.
The basic idea is that both in spite of and despite are followed by a noun or pronoun. See these examples:
이 두 가지 표현 뒤에는 명사나 대명사가 따라와야 하는데, 아래 예문을 한 번 살펴보아요:
In spite of his unhealthy diet he lived a long and happy life
Despite his smoking habit he lived to be 88
A variation of this is when we use the gerund form (verb+ing).
This is much the same thing because the gerund is the noun form of the verb.
또한, 아래 예문들과 같이 동명사 (동사 + ing) 형태가 올 수도 있습니다:
Despite eating unhealthily his whole life, he lived to be 88.
In spite of smoking 40 cigarettes a day, he never developed lung cancer.
The other way we use in spite of and despite is with the phrase the fact that.
This allows you to use a subject and a verb.
'the fact that' 문구를 넣어서 뒤에 절 (주어 + 동사)이 오게 만들 수도 있습니다:
Despite the fact that he did not take care of his diet, he remained healthy.
In spite of the fact that he did not take regular exercise, he stayed in good physical shape.
