THE ASS AND THE LAP-DOG

There was once a man / who had an Ass and a Lap-dog. // The Ass was housed / in the stable / with plenty of oats and hay to eat / and was as well off as an ass could be. //

The little Dog was made a great pet of by his master, /

who fondled him / and often let him lie in his lap; // and if he went out to dinner, /

he would bring back a tit-bit or two to give him / when he ran to meet him on his return. //

The Ass had, it is true, a good deal of work to do, / carting or grinding the corn, /

or carrying the burdens of the farm: // and ere long / he became very jealous, /

contrasting his own life of labour / with the ease and idleness of the Lap-dog. //

At last / one day / he broke his halter, / and frisking into the house /

 just as his master sat down to dinner, / he pranced and capered about, /

 mimicking the frolics of the little favourite, /

upsetting the table and smashing the crockery with his clumsy efforts. //

Not content with that, / he even tried to jump on his master's lap, /

as he had so often seen the dog allowed to do. // At that / the servants, /

seeing the danger their master was in, / belaboured the silly Ass with sticks and cudgels, /

and drove him back to his stable / half dead with his beating. //

 "Alas!" he cried, / "all this / I have brought on myself. /

Why could I not be satisfied with my natural and honourable position, /

without wishing to imitate the ridiculous antics of that useless little Lap-dog?"//

[당나귀와 애완견]

옛날에 한 남자가 있었는데 / 그는 당나귀와 애완견을 가지고 있었다. // 당나귀가 사는 곳은 / 마구간인데 / 이곳은 귀리와 건초가 먹거리로 풍부해서 / 당나귀는 매우 풍요롭게 살았다. // 작은 개가 주인에게 훌륭한 애완동물이 되었고 / 주인은 개를 귀여워하고 / 자주 그 개를 무릎에 눕도록 했다. // 저녁을 먹으러 나가면 / 주인은 맛있는 음식을 약간 가져와서 주었다 / (언제?) 그가 돌아오면 개가 마중 나올 때. // 당나귀는 사실 해야 할 일이 많았다 / 곡물을 나르고 갈고 / 농장의 짐을 날라야 했다. // 곧 / 그는 시기심이 생겼고 / 자신의 힘든 삶을 비교하게 되었다 / (무엇과?) 애완견의 편안하고 한가한 삶과. // 마침내 / 어느 날/ 그는 멍에를 부수고 / 집 안으로 뛰어 들어갔다. / 주인은 그 때 식사를 하려고 자리에 앉았을 때였고 / 당나귀는 껑충껑충 뛰어다녔는데 / 이것은 작은 애완견의 장난을 흉내 낸 것이었다 / 그러나 이 서투른 시도는 식탁을 뒤엎고 그릇을 박살냈다. // 이것에 만족하지 못해서 / 그는 주인의 무릎에 뛰어오르려고 시도했는데 / 이것은 애완견이 그렇게 하는 것이 허락되는 것을 자주 보았기 때문이다. // 이것을 보고 / 하인들은 / 주인이 위험에 빠졌다고 생각하고 / 어리석은 당나귀를 나무와 몽둥이로 때려서 / 마구간으로 돌려 보냈는데 / 당나귀는 얻어맞아서 반쯤 죽은 상태였다. // “아!” 그가 말했다 / “이 모든 것은 / 내가 자초한 것이다. // 내가 왜 자연스럽고 명예로운 위치에 만족하지 못하고 / 저 쓸모 없는 애완견의 어리석은 익살을 흉내 내려고 했을까?”
