4. A Time of Poverty, but Joy in Buddhist Practice
"The Buddhist Purification Movement is starting at Eunhaesa Temple. So, they've asked to borrow some student monks."
Eunhaesa Temple shares a deep connection with Mubi Seunim. Later in life, when a monastic graduate school was established there, he would serve as its first dean.
As a new novice monk studying at the monastic college at Beomeosa Temple, the young Mubi was told by his master to become a student at Eunhaesa.
At Eunhaesa, the instructor was Gakseong Seunim, who was not much older than him. Gakseong Seunim had a weak constitution and would often stir his bowl of barley rice during meals, sighing, "Not a single grain of rice.
" Life was so poor that whenever they received a donation of cotton cloth, they would divide it equally among everyone and carefully save it to make their own clothes. Being taller than the others, Mubi Seunim's share of cloth was always a little too short.
Every day, he had to gather two loads of firewood. He would write down phrases or difficult characters from his studies in a small notebook and memorize them in his spare moments while working.
They worked in the fields and rice paddies. On days they wanted to dye their cotton robes gray, they had to cut down ash trees, burn them, and make lye from the ashes. At Eunhaesa, the monks had to do everything themselves. They even went to Geojoam, a hermitage on the temple grounds, to replace the cushions for each of the five hundred Arhat statues by hand.
It was a life where the saying "Hunger and cold awaken the aspiration for the Way" was learned not with the mind, but with the body.
During that time, in addition to his regular studies at the monastic college, he learned the ‘Song of Enlightenment (Jeungdoga)’ and became captivated by the charm of Seon poetry.
