14.Hwa-Cheon-Dae-Yu (Hexagram 14 : Great Possession)
◎ This is a time of exceptionally flourishing fortune, when gold and jade fill the storehouse,
and one's spiritual energy is clear and vibrant.
Having met a golden age brilliantly illuminated by the sun in the sky,
do not neglect management so as not to invite resentment and jealousy
from those around you.
▣ Hexagram Statement(Da-yu) : Great possession; supreme and penetrating success.
[Explanation]
Da-yu means that the sovereign greatly prospers and succeeds.
[Commentary]
The Zagua Zhuan(Miscellaneous Hexagrams Commrntary) says,
"Da-yu means abundance [大有衆也,대유중야]", and Zhu Xi also stated,
"Da-yu means possessing much [大有所有之大也,대유소유지대야 - Meaning great possession]."
Dasan explained that "Da(大,대) is Yang(陽,양), and Yu(有,유 - Yoo) means that which does
not perish(不亡,불망)―that is, an entity that must remain ; therefore, Da-yu is the complete
restoration of the Yang lines of Geon(乾,건 - ☰) within the storehouse".
The phrase 大有元亨(대유원형) in the Hexagram Statement(卦辭,괘사) meand :
"As the yielding line(柔,유) occuples the noble position of Line 5, gathering the feudal lords
and presiding over harmony, it is greatly prosperous and successful."
Because the gentle and flexible ruler at Line 5 effectively manages feudal lords,
it can be called Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession).
The position of Line 5 represents the head of the household, the chairman, and the CEO.
Line 5 of Dae-yu possesses both gentle inclusiveness and a bright intellect like the sun,
enabling them to lead effectively regardless of how capable or skilled others may be.
To Line 5, who humbly cooperates and forms fellowship(同人,동인) with others,
all under heaven is bound to return.
The reason why the Hexagram Statement(卦辭,괘사) here only states "Dae-yu(大有,대유)
is Won-hyeong(元亨,원형 - supreme success)" without adding the condition
of "Yi-jeong(利貞,이정 - favorable through perseverance) is likely because even
with just Won-hyeong(元亨,원형), it can adeptly handle ever-changing harmony.
If Yi-jeong(利貞,이정) were included, it would add the restrictive condition :
"It will not dounless performed properly."
However, because Dae-yu(大有,대유) has already transcended such conditions and reached
an unconditional state of perfection, it is simply called Won-hyeong(元亨,원형).
Just like the Hexagram lmage(卦象,괘상) of Dae-yu(大有,대유),
when the sun hangs in mid-sky illuminating the entire world,
it shines evenly upon all places without distinguishing between high and low,
four directions, large and small, noble and humble, good and evil, or right and wrong.
Thus, anyone who seeks the sun's light without calculating gain or loss can receive
its bright energy.
The sun does not shine upon any sigle specific individual.
In this regard, Asan analogized this this to Great Nature, comparing it to the sun
illuminating all creation and a wise ruler bestowing benevolent governance.
He suggested that Dae-yu(大有,대유) represents the sun, the sage,
the noble person(君子,군자), the wealthy, the great person, and morality―meaning it does
not belong to any fixed owner, but can be attained and won by anyone through effort.
From this perspective, Dae-yu(大有,대유) is "a hexagram of greatprosperity
for the leader [大有元亨,대유원형]."
Cheng Yi also noted that it aligns well with such a leader,
descrtbing Dae-yu(大有,대유) as "grand(盛大,성대) and abundant(豊有풍유)."
What follows is Confucius's Tuan Zhuan(彖曰,단왈 - Commentary on the Judgement) :
"Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession) obtains a noble position like that of a ruler,
and moreover, it occupies the position of great centrality(大中,대중),
responding mutually with the people and those above and below.
Furthermore, the virtue of this Line 5 is yielding(Yoo) and civilized(Mun-myeong),
matching step by step with the timing and destiny,
so it cannot help but be prosperous and successful(Won-hyeong).
Xiang Zhuan /
Tuan Zhuan says : In Dae-yu(大有,대유), the yieldinng line obtains the noble position,
and beinng central and great, those above and below respond to it―this is why it is called Dae-yu(大有,대유). Its virtue is strong/firm yet civilized, responding to Heaven
and acting in accordance with the times―this is why it brings supreme success
(Won-hyeong). SEongho, Samsan, and Hwadong offer their commentaries
on the Tuan Zhuan]."
Ji-uk also adds the following explanation from the perspective of Buddhism :
"Leaving the ordinary position to directly enter the noble position of Buddhahood
(佛果尊位,불과존위), integrating all dharmas(一切法,일체법) into the Middle Way(中道,중도)
to respond to the Ten Realms(十界,십계), its name is Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession).
Moreover, being strong and firm(剛健,강건) and civilized(文明,문명) has already been fully
accomplished through the practices of a sage(聖行,성행) and pure conduct(梵行,범행) ;
and 'acting in accordance with the times by responding to Heaven
(應乎天而時行,응호천이시행)' means realizing the Five Elements(五行,오행)
within a single mind(一心,일심), taking the Heavenly Action(天行,천행)
as the substance(體,체), while simultaneously embracing the utility(用,용)
of the infant's action(嬰兒行,영아행) and the illness's action(病行,병행)."
Wang Bi also stated :
"If it were not greatly penetrating, how could it possess greatly?
Because it has come to possess greatly, it will naturally and greatly succeed and prosper."
