25.12.25 The clash of generations in 'Sword Snow Stride'

Recently, I watched the 2021 Chinese historical TV series “Sword Snow Stride” on Netflix.

나는 최근 넷플릭스에서 2021년 중국 사극 드라마 Sword Snow Stride<원제: 雪中悍刀行 >를 시청했다.

The show features many interesting themes, such as the responsibility and magnanimity of a leader, questions of loyalty, and the ever-relevant problem of political conspiracies.

이 작품은 지도자의 책임감과 포용력, 충성의 문제, 그리고 시대를 초월한 정치적 음모라는 주제 등 흥미로운 소재들을 다룬다.

But by far the most compelling aspect of the show is its portrayal of the conflict between a father and a son.

그러나 이 드라마의 무엇보다도 가장 강렬한 점은 부자 간의 갈등이 그려진 방식이다.

Season 1’s 38 episodes revolve around Xu Feng Nian, who is the oldest son and heir to Xu Xiao, the fearsome Lord of Northern Liang.

시즌 1의 38개 에피소드는 북량(北涼)의 무서운 군주 서효(徐孝)의 장남이자 후계자인 서풍년(徐風年)을 중심으로 전개된다.

Xu Xiao acquires the nickname Grim Reaper because he ruthlessly massacres his enemies on the battlefield.

서효는 전장에서 적들을 무자비하게 학살하여 '죽음의 신(死神)'이라는 별명을 얻었다.

Xu Feng Nian neither likes nor respects his father. In each episode, Xu Feng Nian repeatedly swears, “I am not like my father.

서풍년은 아버지를 좋아하지도, 존경하지도 않는다. 매회마다 서풍년은 끊임없이 맹세한다. "나는 아버지와 다르다.

I won’t follow in his footsteps. Nor will I take the path he has prepared for me.”

아버지의 뒤를 따르지 않을 것이다. 아버지가 나를 위해 마련해 놓은 길도 가지 않을 것이다."

Xu Feng Nian tries to be independent and to do things differently from his father. This, he believes, will make him a great lord of his territory in the future.

서풍년은 독립적으로 행동하며 아버지와는 다른 길을 걷고자 한다. 그렇게 해야만 미래에 자신의 영지에서 위대한 영주가 될 수 있다고 믿는다.

Indeed, his father belongs to a bygone era when war was inevitable, and generosity was a luxury. Now, Xu Feng Nian lives in peaceful times.

확실히 그의 아버지는 전쟁이 불가피하고 관대함이 사치였던 과거 시대의 인물이다. 지금 서풍년이 사는 시대는 평화로운 시대다.

However, it never occurs to Xu Feng Nian that he and other young people can enjoy peace now due to his father’s tremendous efforts to win wars and survive power politics in the past.

그러나 쉬펑녠은 자신과 다른 젊은이들이 지금 평화를 누릴 수 있다는 사실은 과거 아버지가 전쟁에서 승리하고 권력 정치 속에서 살아남기 위해 기울인 엄청난 노력이 아니었다면 절대로 일어나지 않았을것이다.

Therefore, he does not appreciate how his father’s thoughtful preparations have enabled him to remain safe until he inherits the throne.

그래서 그는 아버지의 세심한 준비 덕분에 왕위를 계승할 때까지 안전하게 지낼 수 있게 된 점을 감사히 여기지 않는다.

He thinks that he can do everything by himself without help from his father.

그는 아버지의 도움 없이도 모든 것을 혼자서 해낼 수 있다고 생각한다.

In fact, however, it is his father’s thoughtful prior arrangements that enable him to do anything and to escape from various assassination attempts and conspiracies.

그러나 사실은 그의 아버지가 미리 치밀하게 준비해 놓은 덕분으로 그는 무엇이든 할 수 있었고, 여러 차례의 암살 시도와 음모에서 벗어날 수 있었다.

Not knowing it, Xu Feng Nian is ungrateful to his benefactor but constantly rebels against a man who, in his eyes, is nothing but a scheming meddler.

그 사실을 모른 채 서풍년은 은인에게 감사하지 않고 오히려 자신의 눈에는 그저 계략을 꾸미는 간섭꾼에 불과한 그 남자에게 끊임없이 반항한다.

There are times when Xu Xiao deliberately puts his son in danger, but all these incidents are part of his plan to train his son to deal with and survive crises.

쉬샤오(서효)가 일부러 아들을 위험에 빠뜨릴 때도 있지만, 이 모든 사건들은 아들이 위기를 극복하고 생존하는 법을 훈련시키기 위한 그의 계획의 일부다.

Most of the time, he is clandestinely protecting his son behind the scenes.

대부분의 경우 그는 뒤에서 은밀히 아들을 보호하고 있다.

Meanwhile, he neither expects gratitude from his son nor makes a virtue of his secret help or puts on airs of patronage. He just does it dutifully as a father.

While watching this series, Korean viewers could appreciate that older people need not brag about their efforts and contributions to the economic success and affluence that today’s young Koreans are enjoying.

이 드라마를 보며 한국 시청자들은 오늘날 젊은이들이 누리는 경제적 성공과 풍요에 대해 자신들의 노력과 기여를 자랑하지 않는 노년층에게 감사할 수 있을 것이다.

Older people’s showing off will only meet derision from young people, who snort, “There goes Latte!” which means, “There goes ‘When I was your age …’” In this show, by contrast, Xu Xiao never tries to lecture his son, by saying, “When I was your age ...”

나이 든 사람들이 잘난 체를 하면 젊은이들에게는 비웃음만 살 뿐이다. 젊은이들은 “라테 나간다!” 하고 코웃음을 치는데, 이는 “내가 너희 나이였을 때는 말이야…”라는 말을 또 시작한다는 뜻이다.

To older people, “Sword Snow Stride” suggests that you should keep silent about what you have done for your sons and daughters.

You can just keep supporting and helping them silently. That is your duty as a parent.

Otherwise, you will be treated as an undignified “dirty old man.”

Indeed, how would young people know about the atrocities of the Korean War, the poverty of the destitute postwar Korean society, or the tyranny of iron boots during the military dictatorship?

과연 젊은이들이 한국 전쟁의 참혹함, 전후 한국 사회의 빈곤, 군사 독재 시절 군화발의 폭정을 어떻게 알겠는가?

At the same time, “Sword Snow Stride” tells young people that they should be different from their parents’ generation and take a different path.

동시에 “Sword Snow Stride”드라마는 젊은이들에게 부모 세대와는 다르게 살아야 하며 다른 길을 걸어야 한다고 말한다.

For the older generation, survival was a matter of life and death.

선배 세대에게는 생존은 생사가 달린 문제였다.

Now times have changed and you should think big, be generous and live a decent, valuable life, transcending mere survival.

이제 시대가 변했으니 큰 그림을 그리고 너그러워져서 단순한 생존을 넘어 품위 있고 가치 있는 삶을 살아야 한다.

The series also tells young people that they should not take what they possess now for granted and should be grateful to their elders for their efforts and sacrifices to build an affluent society.

이 시리즈는 또한 젊은이들에게 지금 소유한 것을 당연하게 여기지 말고 풍요로운 사회를 건설하기 위해 노력하고 희생한 선배 세대에게 감사해야 한다고 말하고 있다.

They should know that older people had to risk their lives, fighting on the battlefields amidst incessant socio-political turmoil and a turbulent history, so that their children could inherit a fully developed, advanced country.

그들은 나이든 사람들이 끊임없는 사회·정치적 혼란과 격동의 역사 속에서 전장에서 목숨을 걸고 싸워야만 했으며 그렇게 해서 자녀들이 완전히 발전된 선진국을 물려받을 수 있었다는 사실을 알아야 한다.

Young Koreans should not forget that it is the older generation that has accomplished the Miracle on the Han River and made today’s Korea.

한국의 젊은이들은 한강의 기적을 이루어내고 오늘날의 한국을 만든 것이 바로 선배 세대라는 사실을 잊어서는 안 됩니다.

When conflicts arise between Xu Xiao and Xu Feng Nian, the show does not take sides.

서효(徐孝)와 서풍년 사이에 갈등이 발생할 때, 드라마는 어느 한쪽 편을 들지 않는다.

Instead, it suggests that the two generations understand each other because both are right in their own ways.

오히려 두 세대가 서로를 이해해야 한다고 제안하는데, 각자의 방식대로 옳기 때문이다.

For example, initially, the son thinks that his father was a cruel human butcher who took pleasure in killing people.

예를 들어, 아들은 처음에 아버지가 사람들을 죽이는 것을 즐기는 잔인한 인간도살자라고 생각한다.

Later, he finds that his father keeps a huge secret memorial altar in the basement to pay homage to those who died on the battlefield.

그러나 나중에 아버지가 지하실에 거대한 비밀 제단을 마련해 전장에서 죽은 이들에게 경의를 표하고 있음을 알게 된다.

“Sword Snow Stride” enlightens us with the idea that our society needs reconciliation, not more antagonisms between the young and the old.

John Stuart Mill wrote “On Liberty” to defend the principle that the only justification for restricting liberty is to prevent harm to others.

Were Mill alive today, he would have been pleased to see how many jurisdictions have repealed laws criminalizing acts widely thought immoral despite harming no one directly: suicide — including medically assisted dying — is one prominent example.

Same-sex relations between consenting adults are another.

If Mill had been updated with information about how often we fail to give proper weight to low risks of catastrophic outcomes, he might have accepted those laws, while still arguing for exemptions for people who have a serious reason not to wear a seatbelt or a helmet.

밀이 우리가 재앙적 결과의 낮은 위험성에 적절한 비중을 두지 못하는 빈도에 관한 최신 정보를 접했다면, 그는 안전벨트나 헬멧을 착용하지 않을 중대한 사유가 있는 사람들에 대한 예외를 주장하면서도 그러한 법률들을 수용했을지도 모른다.

This brings me to the issue that has prompted these “What would Mill do?” thoughts: the overwhelming case for exemptions to laws prohibiting certain drugs.

Consider cluster headache, possibly the most painful condition known to medicine.

It consists of recurring headaches that come in clusters and cause pain behind the eye so severe that they are also known as “suicide headaches.”

The intense pain leads many sufferers to contemplate suicide, and some of them carry it out. Worldwide, about 4 million people suffer from this condition in any given year.

Standard methods of assessing the importance of treating a medical condition include counting the number of years of life saved, adjusted for the quality of those years.
