Here is the English translation of the 수도원 성무일도 (Monastic Daily Office) meditation guide, text analysis, and prayer:
Meditation & Reading Healing Commentary
October 3, 2026 (Saturday) Monastic Daily Office Meditation
Yeongwol Sky-Breath Eco-Monastery Meditation Journal
1. Exposition of Scripture Passages
Psalm 80:7–15 ("Shine Your Light of Restoration, Healing, and Salvation...")
Commentary: The Psalmist implores the Lord God of Hosts to restore them and shine His face upon them that they may be saved. Israel, the vine brought out of Egypt by God, now lies with its walls broken down, trampled, and burned. In genuine repentance and turning back, the poet fervently prays that God will look down from heaven and care for the stock planted by His right hand and the branch He strengthened for Himself.
Jeremiah 6:1–10 ("Jerusalem, the City to Be Punished; Judgment Upon Violence")
Commentary: Disaster and great destruction pour down from the north due to Jerusalem’s sin and violence. God designates Jerusalem as the "city to be punished," pointing out that violence and destruction overflow within her. Though the prophet attempts to warn and convey God’s word, the people’s ears are uncircumcised; they refuse to listen and treat the word of the Lord with contempt.
John 7:40–52 ("Discernment Through the Gospel! Conflict Over the Christ")
Commentary: Upon hearing Jesus' words, the crowd divides: some affirm, "This is truly the Prophet" or "He is the Christ," while others reject Him based on origin and law, asking, "How can the Christ come from Galilee?" Even the temple guards return empty-handed, overwhelmed by the authority of His words. When Nicodemus suggests following proper legal procedure by giving Him a hearing first, the Pharisees dismiss him without discernment, asserting that no prophet arises from Galilee.
2. Six Steps of Monastic Meditation
Voice: God’s warning of judgment upon the violence of Jerusalem, the city to be punished (Jer 6:6).
On this day when the heavens open through prostrating repentance, we listen to the Voice calling us to discern the coming Kingdom of God through the lens of the Gospel and enter into deep, transformative repentance.
Diagnosis: Fulfilling the threefold mission as Watchman, Intercessor, and Monastic!
We rigorously diagnose, reflect upon, and proclaim the state of ourselves and our era within the three-dimensional framework of <God History Self –>.
Solution: Confessing ignorance before the Lord and living with the heart of a child.
Abandoning the arrogance of self-proclaimed wisdom, we confess our ignorance before the Lord. Aligning our desires with His will, we stand daily before the Cross to embrace the life of the Kingdom with the innocence of a child.
Self-Reflection: Deeper humility and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We reflect on whether we are truly lowering ourselves like young children, leaning solely on the Holy Spirit who is our heavenly Light, Power, and Breath.
Proclamation: Transformation into gentleness and humility, and dedication to study (Matt 11:29).
Hearing the Lord’s invitation—"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart"—we proclaim our commitment to inner character transformation and devoted study in scripture and meditation.
Obedience: Labor, spirituality of death, and living in 'Shin-Kong' (申空) (Rev 14:13).
Through honest labor and the spiritual death of the self, we stand before the Lord in Shin-Kong (a state of total spiritual emptiness and openness before God). In this spirit, we intercede fervently for Makhyeon Church, Pyeong-an Military Church, and the youth of Jinhae.
3. Reading Healing Alongside Scripture
Commentary on the 7 Books and Their Connection to Meditation
『Eastern Orthodox Spirituality: System and Manual』
Commentary: Covers the prayer traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church, particularly the Jesus Prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"), inner purification, and Theosis (deification).
Meditation Connection: Serves as the spiritual foundation for clearing the mind of worldly clutter and entering Shin-Kong through rhythmic Jesus Prayers synchronized with breathing.
『Philosophical Thought in the Middle Ages』 (Nicholas of Cusa et al.)
Commentary: Explores medieval philosophy from Augustine to Machiavelli, highlighting Nicholas of Cusa’s concept of Docta Ignorantia ("Learned Ignorance").
Meditation Connection: Provides an intellectual model of humility for the Solution step, where one humbly confesses ignorance before God.
『Our History Through the Lens of the Bible』
Commentary: A monumental work examining the tribulations and historical path of Korea through a redemptive-historical and biblical perspective.
Meditation Connection: Offers a humanist framework for the Diagnosis step, reflecting on national history through the Word of God.
『Light, Power, and Breath』
Commentary: A theological and spiritual collection by Rev. Kim Heung-ho (former professor at Ewha Womans University), integrating SSi-al (Seed/People) thought with the work of the Spirit in the context of spiritual ashrams and vital life energy.
Meditation Connection: Guides the Self-Reflection step, leading us to confess that the Holy Spirit alone is our true Light, Power, and Breath.
『Ryu Yeong-mo, Kim Jae-jun, Lee Yi-hyo-jae』
Commentary: A biographical study exploring the spirituality of Daseok Ryu Yeong-mo, the prophetic Christian thought of Janggong Kim Jae-jun, and the praxis-oriented social consciousness of Lee Yi-hyo-jae.
Meditation Connection: Embodies the threefold mission of Watchman, Intercessor, and Monastic within the context of Korean theology and practice.
『Seclusion』 (The Hidden Life)
Commentary: Conveys the profound value of the monastic vocation—stepping away from the noise of the world to meet God face-to-face in mountain solitudes and prayer cells.
Meditation Connection: Illumines the quiet place of the solitary monastic who cultivates a spirituality of labor, self-mortification, and the Fivefold Scholar’s Path.
『Jesus the Son of God, Christ the Son of Man』
Commentary: An in-depth investigation into the divinity and humanity of Jesus, the historical Jesus, and Christological meaning.
Meditation Connection: Helps us discern Gospel truth amidst the debates of John 7, encouraging us to conform to the gentleness and humility of Christ.
4. The Fivefold Scholar’s Path and Rigorous Humanistic Inquiry
Internalizing the Fivefold Scholar’s Path
Learning (學) → Questioning (問) → Thinking (思) → Discernment (辨) → Practice (行)
Integrated Meditation: Grounded in prophetic warnings (Jeremiah 6), the Psalmist’s plea (Psalm 80), and Gospel discernment (John 7), we engage in rigorous study of Eastern and Western spiritual works alongside humanist wisdom. Moving beyond mere intellectual knowledge, we internalize these truths through the Fivefold Path to live them out in daily action.
5. Prayer
"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us, sinners."
Holy Father God,
On this sacred day when the heavens open, we lower our hearts and draw near to You in prostrate repentance. As we bring before Your judgment the violence and disobedience of this world and our own hearts, shine the light of Your face upon us, and grant us Your grace of salvation, restoration, and healing.
Lord, strip away all pride within us and grant us the humility to confess our ignorance before You. Give us the pure heart of a child to lay down our own desires and hold fast to Your will alone, living daily at the foot of the Cross where the self is crucified.
Holy Spirit, be our Light, our Power, and our Breath. As we take upon ourselves the yoke of the Lord—who is gentle and humble in heart—help us, in the spirit of dedicated scholars, to earnestly learn, question, think, discern, and practice Your truth.
Establish us in Shin-Kong (total emptiness before God) through labor and prayer. Surround Makhyeon Church, Pyeong-an Military Church, and the young adults in Jinhae with Your protective hand, endowing our intercessions with divine power.
Help us stand firm today as Watchmen, Intercessors, and Monastics, discerning and reflecting upon the Triune God, our present reality, history, and our inner selves.
O Holy Spirit... lead us to live as Your holy children, diagnosing and proclaiming the Gospel’s light to the world.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.
