3월 7일 - 다섯 가지 장애에 사로잡히면 진언을 독송해도 소용없다

“붉거나 노랗거나 푸르거나 새빨간 염료를 섞은 물 한 바가지가 있다고 합시다. 만약 시력이 좋은 사람이 그것에 자기 얼굴을 비추어 관찰해보려 한다고 해도, 있는 그대로의 모습을 알 수도 없고 볼 수도 없을 것이오. 그와 똑같이, 감각적 욕망에 묶이고 감각적 욕망에 압도당한 마음으로 지내고 이미 생겨난 감각적 욕망에서 벗어남을 있는 그대로 알지 못하면, 심지어 오랜 동안 독송해왔던 진언들도 마음에 떠오르지 않는데 하물며 독송도 하지 않은 진언은 말해 무엇 하겠소?

"Suppose there is a bowl of water mixed with lac, turmeric, blue dye, or crimson dye. If a man/woman with good sight were to examine his/her own facial reflection in it, he/she would neither know nor see it as it really is. So too, when one dwells with a mind obsessed by sensual lust, overwhelmed by sensual lust, and one does not understand as it really is the escape from arisen sensual lust, on that occasion even those hymns that have been recited over a long period do not recur to the mind, let alone those that have not been recited.

* suppose vt. [that-절] <...이라는 것을> 가정하다;

                    [that-절] ((명령형)) <...이라고> 가정하라, 가령 <...이라고> 하면 (if)

참고로 미국의 미식축구 최종 승자를 가리는 경기를 the Super Bowl이라고 하는데, 이 때 bowl은 경기장 전체 모양이 사발과 같은 모양이라고 해서 붙인 이름이라고 하네요...

* mixed adj. 혼합된, 뒤섞인, 혼성의, 잡다한

* lac n. 랙; 랙 깍지벌레가 분비하는 천연수지; 바니시사 적색 천연 염료의 재료

* turmeric n. [植] 심황; 인도산의 생강과; 근경(根莖)은 가루로 만들어 카레 가루, 물감, 의약 등으로 씀

* were to ~ : 거의 가망성이 없는 강한 가정(假定)을 나타냄

ex) Even if the sun were to rise in the west, I would never break my word.

      해가 서쪽에서 떠오른다 해도 결코 약속을 어기지 않겠다.

* examine vt. ...을 검사[조사, 심사, 검열]하다, 살펴보다

* facial adj. 얼굴의, 안면의

* reflection n. 영상, (거울, 물 등에) 비친 그림자

     그녀가 왜 멕시코에 살고 있는지 납득할 수가 없다.

* escape vt. <사람이> (구속에서) 도망치다, 탈주하다; (...에서) 자유로워지다 (from, out of...);

                  (추적, 재난, 처벌에서) 벗어나다, 모면하다 (from...)

ex) escape from prison 탈옥하다

The animals sometimes escape from their cage. 짐승이 우리에서 도망칠 때가 있다.

* arisen adj. <발음에 주의 ri의 발음은 [ri]임> 일어난, 생겨난 (arisen은 arise의 과거분사로서, 자동사의 과거분사는 완료의 의미가 있으며, 과거분사는 형용사 역할을 합니다. unarisen도 같습니다 ...)

* occasion n. (보통 on 뒤에서) (특정한) 때 (time); 경우

ex) on one occasion 어떤 때, 한 때

      on every occasion [= on all occasions] 모든 경우에

* even adv. (극단적인 경우, 가능성이 낮은 경우를 시사하여) ...조차(도), ...이라도

* hymn n. (일반적으로) 찬양의 표현; 여기서는 ‘진언’이라고 번역되었네요...

* that : even those hymns that과 let alone those that에서 쓰인 that은 관계대명사 주격으로 which 대신에 쓰인 것입니다...실제 문장에서는 which보다는 that이 폭넓게 쓰이고 있음을 주의하시기 바랍니다...아래 문단에서도 이렇게 쓰이는 예가 많이 나옵니다...각자 찾아보시기를 바랍니다...

* let alone... (보통 부정의 문맥에 쓰여서) ...은 말할 것도 없이, ...은 물론

ex) He was too exhausted to think, let alone study.

     그는 너무 고단했기 때문에 공부는 물론 생각조차 할 수 없었다.

* those pron. 앞의 those hymns 대신에 쓴 대명사입니다...

불 위에 올려놓고 열을 가해 거품이 나고 펄펄 끓는 물 한 바가지가 있다고 합시다. 만약 시력이 좋은 사람이 그것에 자기 얼굴을 비추어 관찰해보려 한다고 해도, 있는 그대로의 모습을 알 수도 없고 볼 수도 없을 것이오. 그와 똑같이, 악의(惡意)에 묶이고 악의에 압도당한 마음으로 지내고 이미 생겨난 악의에서 벗어남을 있는 그대로 알지 못하면, 심지어 오랜 동안 독송해왔던 진언들도 마음에 떠오르지 않는데 하물며 독송도 하지 않은 진언은 말해 무엇 하겠소?

Suppose there is a bowl of water being heated over a fire, bubbling and boiling. If a man/woman with good sight were to examine his own facial reflection in it, he/she would neither know nor see it as it really is. So too, when one dwells with a mind obsessed by ill-will, overwhelmed by ill-will, and one does not understand as it really is the escape form arisen ill-will, on that occasion even those hymns that have been recited over a long period do not recur to the mind, let alone those that have not been recited.

* heat vt. ...을 가열하다, 달게 하다; (식은 음식을) 데우다 (up)

* bubble vi. <액체가> 거품이 일다[일게 되다]; 끓다, 비등하다

ex) The coffee bubbled in the pot. 포트의 커피가 끓었다.

* boil vi. (액체가) 끓다, 비등(沸騰)하다

* ill will n. 적의(敵意), 반감, 악의

이끼와 수조(水藻)류가 잔뜩 있는 물 한 바가지가 있다고 합시다. 만약 시력이 좋은 사람이 그것에 자기 얼굴을 비추어 관찰해보려 한다고 해도, 있는 그대로의 모습을 알 수도 없고 볼 수도 없을 것이오. 그와 똑같이, 게으름과 무기력함에 묶이고 게으름과 무기력함에 압도당한 마음으로 지내고 이미 생겨난 게으름과 무기력에서 벗어남을 있는 그대로 알지 못하면, 심지어 오랜 동안 독송해왔던 진언들도 마음에 떠오르지 않는데 하물며 독송도 하지 않은 진언은 말해 무엇 하겠소?

Suppose there is a bowl of water covered over with water plants and algae. If a man/woman with good sight were to examine his own facial reflection in it, he/she would neither know nor see it as it really is. So too, when one dwells with a mind obsessed by sloth and torpor, overwhelmed by sloth and torpor, and one does not understand as it really is the escape form arisen cloth and torpor, on that occasion even those hymns that have been recited over a long period do not recur to the mind, let alone those that have not been recited.

* cover vt. ..에 (...으로) 덮개를 하다, 뚜껑을 덮다 (with...)

보통, 'be covered with (...으로 덮여 있다)'로 쓰임

바람이 휘저어져 요동을 치고 소용돌이 치고 물결이 이는 물 한 바가지가 있다고 합시다. 만약 시력이 좋은 사람이 그것에 자기 얼굴을 비추어 관찰해보려 한다고 해도, 있는 그대로의 모습을 알 수도 없고 볼 수도 없을 것이오. 그와 똑같이, 침착하지 못함과 회한(悔恨)에 묶이고 침착하지 못함과 회한에 압도당한 마음으로 지내고 이미 생겨난 침착하지 못함과 회한에서 벗어남을 있는 그대로 알지 못하면, 심지어 오랜 동안 독송해왔던 진언들도 마음에 떠오르지 않는데 하물며 독송도 하지 않은 진언은 말해 무엇 하겠소?

Suppose there is a bowl of water stirred by the wind, rippling, swirling, churned into wavelets. If a man/woman with good sight were to examine his own facial reflection in it, he/she would neither know nor see it as it really is. So too, when one dwells with a mind obsessed by restlessness and remorse, overwhelmed by restlessness and remorse, and one does not understand as it really is the escape form arisen restlessness and remorse, on that occasion even those hymns that have been recited over a long period do not recur to the mind, let alone those that have not been recited.

* stir vt. <액체 등을> 휘젓다, 뒤섞다

* ripple vi. <수면이> 잔물결을 일으키다, 파문을 만들다; (廣義) 물결치다

ex) her hair rippling down her shoulders 어깨에 물결치는 그녀의 머리카락

* swirl vi. <물, 공, 먼지, 연기 등이> 빙빙 돌다, 소용돌이치다

* churn vt. <액체, 잔 물체 등이> 심하게 움직이다, 거품이 나다;

                <파도 등이> 기슭을 때리다[때렸다가 밀려가다]

ex) leaves churning in a whirlpool 소용돌이에 심하게 움직이는 나뭇잎

* wavelet n. 잔물결

* restlessness n. 침착하지 못함, 불안함

* remorse n. (나쁜 짓, 범죄 등에 대한) 깊은 후회[뉘우침] (regret);

                   양심의 가책, 자책(自責) (compunction)

혼탁하고 혼란스럽고 진흙투성이로 어두운 곳에 놓인 물 한 바가지가 있다고 합시다. 만약 시력이 좋은 사람이 그것에 자기 얼굴을 비추어 관찰해보려 한다고 해도, 있는 그대로의 모습을 알 수도 없고 볼 수도 없을 것이오. 그와 똑같이, 의심에 묶이고 의심에 압도당한 마음으로 지내고 이미 생겨난 의심에서 벗어남을 있는 그대로 알지 못하면, 심지어 오랜 동안 독송해왔던 진언들도 마음에 떠오르지 않는데 하물며 독송도 하지 않은 진언은 말해 무엇 하겠소?

If a man/woman with good sight were to examine his own facial reflection in it, he/she would neither know nor see it as it really is. So too, when one dwells with a mind obsessed by doubt, overwhelmed by doubt, and one does not understand as it really is the escape form arisen doubt, on that occasion even those hymns that have been recited over a long period do not recur to the mind, let alone those that have not been recited.

* turbid adj. <액체·색이> 흐린, 탁한, 불투명한

* unsettled adj. <상태 등이> 불안정한; <사람 등이> 한군데에 정주하지 않은;

                       <의견, 행동이> 동요하고 있는 (<-- un+settlte+d)

* muddy adj. (muddier, muddiest) 진흙의[이 묻은], 진창의
