1884년 10월 '반 고흐'는 가을에 포플러 거리를 동생 테오에게 보내는 편지 속 이렇게 거리를 설명하고 있다.
'내가 만든 마지막 일은 노란 단풍, 태양 주조, 여기저기, 땅에 떨어진 잎에 반짝이는 반점,
줄기의 긴 그림자와 번갈아 가며 포플러의 길을 담는 것이야.


도로의 끝에 작은 오두막, 그리고 그 위에 모든 푸른 하늘과 가을 잎을 통해. . . . '
