PLOWSHARE  평화로운 성탄절

They shall beat their swords into plowshares . . . ;

neither shall they learn war anymore.             —Isaiah 2:4

무리가 그들의 칼을 쳐서 보습을 만들고…

다시는 전쟁을 연습하지 아니하리라-이사야 2:4

매튜 리트는 그의 저서 「1945년의 크리스마스」에서

제2차 세계대전이 끝난 후 미국에서 처음 맞은 평화시의 성탄절에 대해 말하고 있습니다.

그 책에 의하면, 「뉴욕데일리뉴스」는 독자들에게

뉴욕 항에 함대가 들어올 것이라고 다음과 같이 알렸습니다.

“성탄절 날 전함 4척과 항공모함 6척, 순양함 7척과

구축함 24척으로 구성된 강력한 함대를 볼 것입니다.”

그런데 그것은 전쟁 때문이 아니라, 1,000명의 불우 아동들을 군함에 초대하는 행사였습니다.

In his book Christmas 1945, Matthew Litt tells

about the first peacetime Christmas celebration

in the US after World War II.

The New York Daily News alerted readers to expect

a fleet of warships in New York Harbor:

“Christmas Day will fi-nd a mighty armada,

consisting of 4 battleships, 6 carriers, 7 cruisers,

and 24 destroyers.”

But instead of waging war,

the military ships hosted 1,000 needy children.

짙은 감색 코트와 털실로 짠 모자를 선물로 싸 놓고 그들이 배에 타기를 기다렸습니다.
전쟁을 위한 배들이 사랑을 실어 나르는 배로 변했습니다.

The children’s measurements had been taken previously

so that perfectly fitted navy-blue coats and woolen caps

 would be gift-wrapped and awaiting them aboard the ships.
These vessels of war had been transformed
into carriers of compassion.

이사야 선지자는 먼 훗날 이 땅에 있을 그리스도의 평화로운 통치를 예언했습니다.

“무리가 그들의 칼을 쳐서 보습을 만들고 그들의 창을 쳐서 낫을 만들 것이며

이 나라와 저 나라가 다시는 칼을 들고 서로 치지 아니하며

다시는 전쟁을 연습하지 아니하리라”(2:4).

성탄절은 평강의 왕께서 궁극적으로

전 세계적인 평화와 긍휼의 때를 이루시리라는 것을 상기시켜줍니다.

The prophet Isaiah predicted

a future day of Christ’s reign
of peace on this earth:

“They shall beat their swords into plowshares,

and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall
not lift up sword against nation,

neither shall they learn war anymore”.

Christmastime serves as a reminder that

the Prince of Peace will ultimately bring

a time of global calm and compassion.

평강의 왕이 오신 성탄을 축하하며 또 그분의 재림을 기다리면서,

우리는 그의 “사랑을 실어 나르는 배”로서 우리에게 주어진 섬기는 특권을 다시 돌아보게 됩니다

and wait for His second coming,

we are reminded of our privilege to serve
