4. 가난하지만 도를 닦는 일에 기뻤던 시절, A Time of Poverty, but Joy in Buddhist Practice

[眞如華]

해인사 강원을 졸업하던 해에, 다른 절에 가지 않고 곧장 해인사 선방에 방부를 들였다.

성철스님께서 백련암에서 법문을 하러 큰절로 내려오시면 ‘현지시자’를 자초했다.

방에 불도 때 드리고, 물도 준비해 드리고, 청소도 해 드리면서 시봉을 했다. 곁에서 큰 스님의 향기를 조금이라도 맡고 싶었다. 덕분에 백련암에 있는 장경각이라는 스님의 개인 도서관도 구경할 수 있었다. 성철스님은 세상의 모든 지식들을 흡수하고 계신다는 것도 그때 알았다. 그리고, 성철스님이 상좌들과 다른 스님네들을 어떻게 다르게 훈련시키는지도 배웠다.

무비스님이 <이광수 전집>을 사서 애지중지하며 도반들과 돌려봤고, 법정스님 문하에서 문학 공부도 하고 글쓰는 법도 배웠으며, 대학 앞 헌책방에서 신입생들이 공부하는 교양과목들의 개론서들을 모조리 사와서 읽기도 한 것은 습자지처럼 온 세상의 지식을 흡수하고 싶었기 때문이다. 그것은 진리인 불법을 지금 이 세상에서 잘 통하는 말로 가장 필요로 하는 사람들에게 정확하게 전달하기 위해서였다.

그런 일에 진전이 컸다.

다양한 외부적인 공부 중에도 무비스님은 언제나 선어록과 경전들을 끼고 살았다. 이 오래된 가르침들이 어떤 선지식보다 훌륭한, 상설변설하는 선지식이라는 것을 일찍이 알았다.

 He graduated from the Haeinsa academy, instead of going to another temple, he went straight to the Haeinsa meditation hall to begin his formal practice.

Whenever the great master Seongcheol Seunim came down from Baengnyeonam Hermitage to the main temple complex to give a Dharma talk, Mubi Seunim would volunteer to be his 'Hyeonji Sija' (personal attendant). He served him by heating the room, preparing water, and keeping it clean. He did this because he wanted to absorb even a fraction of the great master's presence.

Thanks to this opportunity, he was also able to see Janggyeonggak, the master's personal library at Baengnyeonam Hermitage.

It was then he realized that Master Seongcheol was absorbing all the knowledge in the world. He also learned how the master trained his direct disciples differently from the other monks.

Mubi Seunim's desire to absorb all the world's knowledge, like a piece of blotting paper, was immense. This is why he bought and treasured the collected works of Lee Gwang-su, sharing them with his fellow monks. He also studied literature and learned the art of writing under the guidance of Beopjeong Seunim, and he even bought and read every introductory textbook for liberal arts courses that freshmen studied from the used bookstores near the university.

His ultimate goal was to accurately convey the Dharma—the ultimate truth—to the people who needed it most, using language that could be clearly understood in the modern world.

And in this pursuit, he made great progress.

Throughout all these diverse, external studies, Mubi Seunim always kept the Seon records and scriptures close. He had realized early on that these ancient teachings were,

in themselves, the greatest of all teachers—a teacher superior to any living master, one that was always present and always ready to teach.
