참부모경 - 414. 국제과학통일회의 제안 배경

참부모님께서는 절대가치를 중심으로 세계평화 실현을 모색하는 국제과학통일회의(ICUS)를 개최하셨다. 이 회의는 1972년 이후 지속적으로 세계 석학들이 참석한 가운데 열렸다. 제1차 국제과학통일회의는 1972년 11월 23일부터 26일까지 ‘현대과학의 도덕적 방향에 대하여’라는 주제로 미국 뉴욕 월돌프아스토리아호텔에서 열렸고, 제2차 회의는 1973년 11월 18일부터 21일까지 일본 도쿄 제국호텔에서 ‘현대과학과 도덕 가치’라는 주제로 개최되었다. 특히 2차 회의에는 저명 물리학자를 포함한 노벨상 수상자 5명이 참석하였다. 그 후 국제과학통일회의는 ‘절대가치’라는 주제를 내걸고 세계 현안을 논의하였으며, 참부모님께서 대회마다 창설자로서 기조연설을 하셨다.

1 아버님에게는 하늘의 소명을 받아 세계를 어떻게 수습해서 하나님의 원하는 이상세계로 끌고 가느냐, 그 첩경이 무엇이냐 하는 것이 문제였습니다. 그래서 교수사회를 결속시키고 국제과학통일회의를 만들었습니다. 1971년 미국에 갔을 때 황량한 벌판에 나선 고아와 같았습니다. 주변에는 이리떼가 득실거리는데 벌거벗은 고아와 같은 자리에 가 있었던 것입니다. ‘여기 이 땅에 와서 3년 반 동안에 이 나라를 뒤집어야 된다. 문제를 일으켜 격동시켜 버려야 된다.’고 생각했습니다. 거기에서 어떻게 기반을 닦느냐 하는 것이 문제였습니다.
 
2 내가 처음 미국에 갔을 때 미국의 우리 교회본부의 1년 예산이 2만6천달러였습니다. 10년 가까이 지난 지금은 한 달에 쓰는 것이 350만 달러내지 450만 달러가 됩니다. 꿈같은 얘기입니다. 몇 백배의 경제 기반을 닦았다는 것입니다. 이렇게 되는 과정에서 비자 문제가 나와서 미국 정부에서 일본 식구와 독일 식구를 쫓아내는 일이 벌어지게 되었습니다. 하지만 그렇게 쫓아내기 전에 기반을 다 닦았습니다. 이런 싸움을 해서 무엇을 할 것이냐? 세계적인 반공전선을 확립해야 되겠다는 것입니다. 그러려면 젊은이들만 가지고는 안 됩니다. 그래서 여기에 필요한 최고의 지성인, 세계적인 학자들을 어떻게 모으느냐 하는 것이 문제가 됩니다. 그렇기 때문에 국제과학통일회의를 만들게 된 것입니다.
 
3 국제과학통일회의가 출발할 때 나는 면사무소의 급사 모양이었습니다. 그렇다고 그것이 나쁘다는 것이 아닙니다. 나는 그것을 다 받아들였습니다. 거기에 대항했으면 벌써 다 뭉그러져 버렸을 것입니다. 내가 기조연설을 하고 난 다음에 세계적인 물리학자 한 사람은 거기에 반대해 소리를 지르고 뛰쳐나가기도 하였습니다. 그런 천대를 받았습니다. 그렇지만 내가 할 말을 했습니다. 그런 것에 개의치 않고 다 잊어버렸습니다. 높은 산이 되었으면 바람도 먼저 맞아야 되고 여름이라 해도 눈을 지고 있어야 됩니다. 그렇다고 그 자리를 안 지키면 어떻게 되겠습니까? 명산이 다 깨져 나가는 것입니다. 남들이 잘살고 있을 때 그렇게 높은 산꼭대기에서 백설을 지고 혼자 고독하게 나온 것입니다. 그러나 백두산 혹은 히말라야의 에베레스트 산정을 답반(踏攀)하는 용사들 앞에는 그것이 희망봉이 될 것입니다.
 
4 아버님이 미국에 와서 전부 조사해 보니까 공산세력이 지금까지 정치와 외교문제를 놓고 정부에 대해 반대운동을 해왔더라는 것입니다. 이제 대학가를 중심삼은 활동이 돌변할 것임이 틀림없기 때문에 공산세력이 지하에서 올라오기 전에 우리가 꼭대기에 가서 그들을 막아야 되겠다는 것입니다. 이것을 나라가 해야 됩니다. 그런데 나라가 못하니까 우리가 해야 됩니다. 미국을 구해주기 위해서입니다. 그래서 일본과 중국을 연결시켜 앞으로 방대한 연결체를 만들려고 계획하고 있습니다. 과학자대회나 정치학자대회 같은 것을 구상해서 앞으로 유엔에서 공산세력이 주도권을 쥐는 것을 방지할 수 있는 세계적인 활동을 전개해야 됩니다. 나라가 안 하면 우리가 해야 됩니다. 내가 해야 됩니다. 그러한 일을 하기 위한 만반의 준비를 여러분이 모르는 사이에 하고 있습니다. 이런 일을 왜 하느냐? 직접적으로 할 수 있는 입장이 못 되기 때문에 간접적으로라도 해서 기반을 넗혀 우리의 올바른 터전을 가리기 위해서입니다. 미국에 새로운 방향을 제시해서 그들에게 민주세계에 공헌할 수 있는 보람 있는 사명을 그냥 그래도 인계하여 그것을 천의에 결부시키고자 하는 목적에서 이런 일을 하고 있는 것입니다.
 
5 국제과학통일회의 각 분과 분과의 전문위원들은 전문적인 학자들로서 그들이 그 분야에서 영향을 미쳤지만, 서로 통합해서 전 세계에 영향을 미치게 하기 위한 일을 구상해서 추진하는 일이 오늘날 학계에서는 없었습니다. 우리가 이런 일을 한 것은 앞으로 통일교회가 상당히 비중을 가질 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다. 이것을 계속하다 보면 아버님이 미국에서 활동하는 모든 분야에 후원․동조할 수 있는 기반이 최고의 지성인들을 통해 이루어지리라고 보고 있습니다. 지금까지 국제회의 가운데서 학술회의는 분과별로 전문분야의 학자들만 모여서 했기 때문에 제한되어 있었던 것이 사실입니다. 그런데 방대한 전체 분야의 모임을 개최하기 때문에 국제적인 수준을 대표한 노벨상 수상자만 해도 70명 이상이 규합되리라고 봅니다. 그런 관점에서 이 학술회의는 세계에 없는 역사적인 기록을 남기게 될 것입니다. 이제 미국은 유명한 10개 대학이면 10개 대학의 노벨상 수상자들을 중심삼고 그 사람들이 주동해서 금후의 방향을 제시해 나가게 하든가, 인선을 하여 학교별로 조직화해서 모든 교수들에게 방향을 제시함과 동시에 학생들을 움직이는 운동을 조직화해야 되겠다는 것입니다. 이것이 아버님이 국제과학통일회의에 거는 소망이요 관입니다.
 
6 1972년 제1차 국제과학통일회의를 미국 뉴욕 월돌프아스토리아호텔에서 개최했는데 32명이 모였습니다. 그때 아버님은 심부름꾼과 마찬가지로 귀퉁이에 있는지 없는지 모르게 앉아 있었습니다. 그런데 할 줄 모르는 영어였지만 내가 설립자로서 얘기했습니다. 그래서 1년이 가고 2년이 가서 그 성과가 좋으니 아버님이 잘했다고 하지 의장이 잘했다고 안 하게 되었습니다. 지금에 와서는 세계의 학자들이 아버님을 존경하고 있고 으레 어른으로 대접해야 될 것을 안다는 것입니다. 내가 세계 각국을 돌아다니면서 이 국제과학통일회의에 참석했던 학자들을 모아 연회를 한다면 수백 명이 모인 가운데 할 수 있습니다. 그런 세계 기반이 다 닦아졌다는 것입니다.
 
7 세계적인 석학들을 움직일 수 있는 기반을 닦기 위해서 국제과학통일회의를 만들었습니다. 제2차 대회는 도쿄에서 열렸는데, 도쿄대학을 중심삼은 유명한 학자들을 앞세워 세계의 석학들을 모아서 대회를 하였습니다. 나는 이 대회 창설자이니 만큼 인사말을 하려고 생각했습니다. 그런데 주인이 인사를 하는 것은 조직세계의 사리임에도 불구하고 내가 강연하고 인사하는 순서가 전부 빠져 있었습니다. 그래서 이것을 하루저녁에 뒤집어 놓았습니다. 나를 우습게 알았다가 한번 들이맞은 것입니다. 그때까지만 해도 나를 만나보지 못한 사람은 내가 무슨 왕관이나 감투를 쓰고 도복을 입고 행차할 줄로 알고 있었습니다. ‘누가 통일교회 교주 문 아무개야?’라고 하면서 내가 단 위로 올라가는데도 나를 보는 것이 아니라 다른 데를 바라보고 있더라는 것입니다. 그 뒤집어 놓은 판국에서 웃으면서 ‘나는 아시아와 세계의 운명을 걸고 여기에 섰다.’는 생각으로 강연을 하였습니다. 당당하게 그 자리에 섰다는 것입니다.
 
8 국제과학통일회의를 뉴욕에서 1차 대회, 도쿄에서 2차 대회를 했습니다. 이제 3차 대회는 런던에서 하게 됩니다. 4차 대회는 또 뉴욕에서 합니다. 이렇게 해서 세계무대에 있는 거성들, 학계의 거성들을 규합하는 운동을 하는 것입니다. 이처럼 4차까지 해서 세계적인 저명인사, 다시 말하면 노벨상을 수상한 학자들 수십 명이 여기에 가담한다는 사실이 드러나게 되면, 이것은 세계무대를 향해서 대대적으로 선전하더라도 언론기관에도 부끄럽지 않은 기반이 닦아지는 것입니다. 그래서 뉴욕 대회까지 거친 후에 본격적으로 세계학자들을 조직하려고 합니다. 그때까지는 우리가 끌고 나가면서 배후를 밀어주는 것입니다. 이러한 일을 하는 것은 앞으로 세계를 움직이기 위해서입니다. 세계 전문분야의 저명한 학자들을 어떻게 동원하느냐 하는 것이 금후의 세계를 움직이는 데 기초가 되고 기본이 되는 것입니다.
 
9 1975년 11월에 60개국의 석학들을 모아서 국제과학통일회의를 개최하였습니다. 노벨상 수상자라든가 세계에서 권위있는 학자 350명을 초청해 뉴욕에서 큰 잔치를 하였습니다. 이것이 벌써 햇수로 5년째로 들어섰는데, 6년째만 되면 세계의 이름난 학자들 가운데 모르는 사람이 없을 것입니다. 거기에 동반하여 대학원리연구회 조직을 세계적으로 강화시켜서 이 사람들과 하나 만들려고 합니다. 세계를 움직이려면 대학가를 먼저 움직여야 됩니다. 세계적인 대학가를 움직이는 사람이 앞으로 세계를 지도할 수 있습니다. 그리고 언론계와 경제계를 움직이는 사람이 세계를 움직일 수 있습니다.
 
10 박사라고 해서 자기 전문분야 외의 것을 모르면 안 됩니다. 그래서 내가 국제과학통일회의를 만들어 학자세계의 담벼락을 허문 것입니다. 과학을 연구하는 사람들은 자기 전문분야가 아니면 잘 모릅니다. 경제학이니 정치학이니 다 모른다는 것입니다. 그래서 내가 국제과학통일회의를 만들어 그것을 평준화한 것입니다.
 
11 아버님이 세계의 유명한 과학자들을 모아서 국제과학통일회의를 만들었습니다. 처음에는 공석에서 그 사람들이 자기들을 이용하려고 한다고 하였습니다. 자기들을 이용하더라도 망할 것이 어디 있느냐는 것입니다. 학계의 담을 터 버린 사람이 누구냐는 것입니다. 유명한 과학자들과 정치․경제․철학자들이 한 대학에서 만나면서도 서로 말도 안 합니다. 그들을 형제지간으로 만들고, 최고의 학자들을 중심으로 연합운동을 통해 민족 감정을 넘어서서 초국가적인 민족 심정권과 초국가적인 통일적 역사를 계발할 수 있는 일을 했습니다. 역사적 사건 중에서도 위대한 사건입니다. 그 대회의 주제도 내가 정했습니다. 그래서 그들이 아버님을 최고로 모신 것입니다. 아버님이 위대한 공헌을 했다는 사실을 역사를 두고 찬양할 수 있는 기록으로 남겨 놓았다는 것입니다.
 
12 국제과학통일회의와 관련해 우리의 사명은 첫째로 중요한 요원들을 선발해야 된다는 것입니다. 여기에서 선발하게 되면 여러분이 추천해 주어야 됩니다. 둘째는 장기적 유대 조성입니다. 일시적으로만 하지말고 한 번 했으면 유지해 나가야 합니다. 여러분이 장기적 유대를 맺는데 노력해야 된다는 것입니다. 국제과학통일회의에 한 번 나오고 흘러가 버리게 해서는 안 됩니다. 셋째는 앞으로 미국이면 미국의 주에서 오는 교수들의 비용 일체를 그 주가 책임지고, 각 나라에서 오는 교수들의 비용 일체를 그 나라에서 책임질 수 있는 조직을 만들어야 됩니다. 그래야 세계적인 발전을 하는 것입니다. 넷째는 그들을 논설위원으로 활용하는 것입니다. 우리가 국제적인 신문사를 만들 때 이 사람들이 논설위원으로서 얼마만큼 능력이 있겠는지를 알아서 이들을 활용하기 위한 준비를 지금부터 해야 됩니다. 그런 책임을 여러분이 져야 됩니다. 국제과학통일회의를 중심삼고 중요한 인물선출, 장기적 유대, 자금부담, 대학가나 언론에 활용하는 문제, 이런 것들에 대해 지금부터 여러분이 관심을 가지라는 말입니다.

真の父母経 - 414. 「科学の統一に関する国際会議」提案の背景

真の父母様は、絶対価値を中心に世界平和の実現を模索する「科学の統一に関する国際 会議(ICUS)」を開催された。この会議は、一九七二年以降、世界の碩学たちが参加する中、継続して開かれた。第一回「科学の統一に関する国際会議」 は、一九七二年十一月二十三日から二十六日まで、「現代科学の道徳的方向性について」というテーマで、アメリカ、ニューヨークのウォルドルフ・アストリ ア・ホテルで開かれ、第二回会議は、一九七三年十一月十八日から二十一日まで、日本の東京にある帝国ホテルにおいて「現代科学と道徳価値」というテーマで 開催された。特に第二回の会議には、著名な物理学者を含むノーベル賞受賞者五人が参加した。その後、「科学の統一に関する国際会議」では、「絶対価値」を テーマに掲げて世界の懸案を議論し、真の父母様が大会ごとに創設者として基調演説をされた。
 
1     お父様にとっては、天の召命を受け、世界をどのように収拾して神様が願う理想世界に導いていくか、その近道とは何かが問題でした。それで、教授社会を結束 させ、「科学の統一に関する国際会議」をつくったのです。一九七一年に、アメリカを訪れた時、荒涼とした野原に立った孤児のようでした。周辺にはおおかみ が群れをなしているのに、裸の孤児のような立場に赴いたのです。「この地に来て、三年半の間にこの国をひっくり返さなければならない。問題を起こし、激し く動かしてしまわなければならない」と考えました。そこでどのように基盤を築くかが問題でした。
 
2     私が初めてアメリカに行ったとき、アメリカの教会本部の一年の予算が、二万六千ドルでした。十年近く過ぎた今は、一ヵ月に使う経費が三百五十万ドルから四 百五十万ドルになります。夢のような話です。何百倍の経済基盤を築いたというのです。このようになる過程で、ビザの問題が出てきて、アメリカ政府が日本食 口とドイツ食口を追い出すという出来事が起きるようになったのです。しかし、すべて基盤を築きました。
このような闘いをして、何をするのでしょうか。世界的な反共戦線を確立しなければならないというのです。そのためには、若者たちだけではできませ ん。ですから、ここに必要な最高の知識人、世界的な学者たちをどのように集めるかが問題になります。それで、「科学の統一に関する国際会議」を創設するこ とになったのです。
 
3     「科学の統一に関する国際会議」が出発するとき、私は町役場の給仕のような姿でした。だからといって、それが悪いというのではありません。私はそれをすべ て受け入れました。それに抵抗していれば、既にすべて崩れてしまっていたでしょう。私が基調演説をしたあと、世界的な物理学者の一人が、それに反対し、声 を上げて飛び出していったということもありました。そのような扱いを受けたのです。
しかし、私は言うべきことを言ったのです。そのようなことを意に介さず、すべて忘れてしまいました。高い山になれば、風にもまず当たらなければなら ず、夏でも雪をかぶっていなければなりません。だからといって、その位置を守らなければ、どのようになるでしょうか。名山がすべて砕けていくのです。ほか の人々が豊かに暮らしているとき、そのように高い山の頂上で白い雪をかぶり、一人孤独に歩んできました。しかし、白頭山（ペクトゥサン）、あるいはヒマラ ヤのエベレストの山頂に登攀（とうはん:よじ登ること）する勇士たちの前には、それが希望峰になるのです。
 
4     お父様がアメリカに来て、すべて調査してみると、共産勢力が今まで政治と外交問題を中心として、政府に対して反対運動をしてきたというのです。これから大 学を中心とした活動が急変するのは間違いないので、共産勢力が地下から上がってくる前に、私たちが頂点に行って彼らを防がなければならないのです。これ は、国がしなければなりません。
しかし、国ができないので、私たちがしなければなりません。アメリカを救うためです。ですから、日本と中国を連結させて、これから膨大な連結体をつ くろうと計画しています。科学者大会や政治学者大会のようなものを構想して、今後、国連で共産勢力が主導権を握るのを防止できる世界的な活動を展開しなけ ればなりません。国がしなければ、私たちがしなければなりません。私がしなければならないのです。そのようなことをするための万全の準備を、皆さんが知ら ない間にしているのです。
このようなことを、なぜするのでしょうか。直接的にできる立場に立てないので、間接的にでもして基盤を広げ、私たちの正しい基盤を選別するためで す。アメリカに新しい方向を提示し、民主世界に貢献できるやり甲斐のある使命を彼らにそのまま引き継がせて、それを天意に結びつけようという目的で、この ようなことをしているのです。
 
5     「科学の統一に関する国際会議」の各分科ごとの専門委員たちは、専門的な学者であり、それぞれの分野で影響を及ぼした人たちですが、互いに統合して、全世 界に影響を及ぼすためのプロジェクトを構想して推進することが、今日まで学界にはありませんでした。
私たちがこのようなことをしたことは、今後、統一教会が一目置く存在になることができる良い機会になるでしょう。これを続けていけば、お父様がアメ リカで活動するすべての分野に対して、後援し同調する基盤が、最高の知識人たちを通してできるだろうと考えています。今まで、国際会議の中で学術会議は、 分科別に専門分野の学者たちだけが集まり、行ってきたので、制限されていたのが実情です。しかし、(この会議は)膨大な全体分野の集会を開催するので、国 際的な水準を代表するノーベル賞受賞者だけでも、七十人以上が糾合されるのではないかと考えています。
そのような観点で、この学術会議は、世界にない歴史的な記録を残すようになるでしょう。今やアメリカは、有名な十大学であれば、十大学のノーベル賞 受賞者たちを中心として、その人々が主導して、今後の方向を提示していくようにしたり、人選をして学校別に組織化して、すべての教授たちに方向を提示した りすると同時に、学生たちを動かす運動を組織化しなければならないというのです。これが、お父様が「科学の統一に関する国際会議」にかける願いであり、観 点です。
 
6     一九七二年、第一回「科学の統一に関する国際会議」をアメリカ、ニューヨークのウォルドルフ・アストリア・ホテルで開催しましたが、三十二人が集まりまし た。当時、お父様は使い走りと同じで、隅っこにいるのかいないのか分からないように座っていました。ところが、拙い英語でしたが、私が設立者として話をし ました。そうして、一年がたち、二年がたつと、その成果が良いので、お父様に対して「よくやった」と言うのであって、議長に対して「よくやった」とは言わ なくなりました。
今になって、世界の学者たちはお父様を尊敬していて、当然、目上の人として接待しなければならないことが分かっているというのです。私が世界各国を 回りながら、この「科学の統一に関する国際会議」に参加した学者たちを集めてバンケットをするとすれば、数百人が集まる中で、開催することができるので す。そのような世界基盤がすべてできたというのです。
 
7     世界的な碩学たちを動かすことのできる基盤を築くためにつくったのが、「科学の統一に関する国際会議」です。第二回大会は東京で開かれたのですが、東京大 学を中心とした有名な学者たちを前に立て、世界の碩学たちを集めて大会を行いました。私はこの大会の創設者なので、挨拶の言葉を語ろうと考えていました。 ところが、主人が挨拶するのは組織世界における常識であるにもかかわらず、私が講演し、挨拶をする式順がすべて抜けていたのです。それで、これを一晩で ひっくり返しました。私を見くびって、(逆に)一発たたかれたのです。
その時でさえ、私に会ったことがなかった人は、私が何かの王冠やかぶり物をかぶり、修行服を着て出てくるものだと思っていました。「誰が統一教会の 教主、文某なのか」と言って、私が登壇しても、私を見るのではなく、ほかの所を眺めていたというのです。そのひっくり返しておいた局面で、笑いながら、 「私はアジアと世界の運命を懸けてここに立っている」という思いで、講演を行いました。堂々とその場に立ったというのです。
 
8     「科学の統一に関する国際会議」は、ニューヨークで第一回大会、東京で第二回大会を行いました。今度、第三回大会はロンドンで行います。第四回大会は、ま たニューヨークで行います。このようにして、世界の舞台にいる巨星たち、学界の巨星たちを糾合する運動をするのです。このように第四回までやって、世界的 な著名人、言い換えれば、ノーベル賞を受賞した学者たち数十人がここに加担するという事実が明らかになれば、これは世界の舞台に向かって大々的に宣伝して も、言論機関に対して恥ずかしくない基盤ができるのです。そうして、ニューヨーク大会まで経たあとに、本格的に世界の学者たちを組織しようと考えていま す。その時までは、私たちが引っ張っていきながら、背後を押してあげるのです。
このようなことをするのは、これから世界を動かすためです。世界の専門分野の著名な学者たちをどのように動員するかが、今後の世界を動かすに当たって基礎になり、基本となるのです。
 
9     一九七五年十一月に六十ヵ国の碩学たちを集め、「科学の統一に関する国際会議」を開催しました。ノーベル賞受賞者や、世界で権威のある学者三百五十人を招 請し、ニューヨークで大きなバンケットを行いました。これが既に、年数で五年目に人ったのですが、六年目になれば、世界の有名な学者たちの中で、知らない 人がいなくなるでしょう。それに伴い、大学原理研究会の組織を世界的に強化させ、この人々と一つにしようと思います。
世界を動かそうと思えば、まず大学を動かさなければなりません。世界的な大学を動かす人が、これから世界を指導することができます。そして、言論界と経済界を動かす人が、世界を動かすことができるのです。
 
10    博士だからといって、自分の専門分野以外のことを知らないのではいけません。ですから、私が「科学の統一に関する国際会議」を創設し、学者世界の壁を崩し たのです。科学を研究する人々は、自分の専門分野でなければよく知りません。経済学や政治学など、みな知らないというのです。ですから、私が「科学の統一 に関する国際会議」を創設して、それを平準化したのです。
 
11    お父様は世界の有名な科学者たちを集めて、「科学の統に関する国際会議」を創設しました。最初は公の席で、彼らが「自分たちのことを利用しようとしてい る」と言いました。あなたたちを利用したからといって、滅びるものがどこにあるのかというのです。学界の壁を崩してしまった人は誰かというのです。有名な 科学者たちと政治、経済、哲学の学者たちが、同じ大学で顔を合わせていても、互いに話しかけもしません。彼らを兄弟の関係にして、最高の学者たちを中心に 連合運動を展開し、民族感情を越えて超国家的な民族心情圏と超国家的な統一的歴史を啓発できる活動を行ったのです。歴史的な事件の中でも、偉大な事件で す。その大会のテーマも、私が決めました。そうして、彼らがお父様に対して最高の基準で侍ったのです。お父様が偉大な貢献をしたという事実に対して、歴史 的にたたえることのできる記録として残しておいたというのです。
 
12    「科学の統一に関する国際会議」と関連し、私たちの使命は、第一に、重要な要人たちを選抜しなければならないということです。ここで選抜するようになれ ば、皆さんが推薦してくれなければなりません。重要な学者たちを選抜しなければならないのです。

第三は、これからアメリカであれば、アメリカの州から来る教授たちの費用に対して、すべてその州が責任をもち、各国から来る教授たちの費用に対して、すべてその国で責任をもつことができる組織をつくらなければなりません。そのようにしてこそ、世界的に発展するのです。
第四は、彼らが論説委員として活躍できるようにすることです。私たちが国際的な新聞社を造るとき、この人々が論説委員としてどれほど能力があるかを 把握して、彼らが活躍できるようにするための準備を今からしなければなりません。そのような責任を、皆さんがもたなければなりません。「科学の統一に関す る国際会議」を中心として、重要な人物の選出、長期的連帯、資金負担、大学や言論に活用する問題、このようなことに対して、今から皆さんが関心をもちなさ いということです。

Chambumo Gyeong - 414. The unity of the sciences

True Parents founded and hosted the International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS) which pursued the realization of world peace based on absolute values. This began in 1972, drawing the participation of world-renowned scholars. The first conference was held November 23-26,1972 under the theme "Moral Orientation of the Sciences" at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The second conference was held November 18-21, 1973 under the theme "Modem Science and Moral Values" at the Tokyo Imperial Hotel. It was remarkable that five Nobel laureates, including renowned physicists, participated in the second conference. From then on, each ICUS was held with the theme, ""absolute values."" As the founder, True Father spoke on each occasion. "
 
1 When I received the call of heaven, the question was how to put the current world in order and find a shortcut to transforming it into the ideal world that God desires. To address this question, we assembled a group of professors and created the International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences. In 1971, when I went alone to America, I remember that I felt like an unprotected orphan in a desolate wilderness with a pack of wolves prowling around me. I thought to myself, "I came here to this place with the mission of turning this country upside down within three and a half years. I must turn the country upside down." The question was how to establish a foundation in that environment. (142-188, 1986/03/09)
 
2 When I first went to America, the annual budget of our American church headquarters was about $26,000. Now, almost ten years later, we have established an economic foundation that is several hundred times greater than when we began. As we attained this level, a problem arose in that the church's applications for long-term visas for overseas members working in the United States were being denied, and some of the foreign members had to return home. Nonetheless, before they had to leave, that foundation had been laid. Why did we have such a battle? It was because we were building a foundation to overcome communism. For that purpose, it was not adequate to have only young people. Therefore, the problem was how to bring together the most intelligent scholars of the world, those who could address that purpose. 3 When ICUS was launched, I probably looked like an errand boy from the local district office. However, this is not a bad thing. I fully went along with it. If I had created opposition then, everything would have collapsed and would have been discarded long ago. There was one incident when, after I gave my keynote address, a world-renowned biologist loudly objected and stormed out. I was treated like this. But I said what I had to say. I did not dwell on that. My heart was to forgive and forget. A high mountain is struck by wind first and is buried in snow even during the summer. If it does not remain steadfast, what will happen? That famous mountain will break into pieces. While people live comfortably in the world, the snow-covered peak lives a lonely and isolated life. But in the end, that mountain, like Mt. Baekdu or Mt. Everest in the Himalayas, will be a sign of hope for the brave heroes who strive to reach its summit. (207-186, 1990/11/09)
 
4 According to my research, I can see that to this day communists have actively opposed the United States govern ment, in particular the administration and its foreign policy. Campus-based activities are unstable and subject to change. So, before communists appear in the open, we must try to reach eminent people who have broad influence. The country must take this on; yet as it is not able to, we must do it. The purpose is to save the United States.

We plan to form a strong union connecting Japan and Taiwan in the future. After holding conferences on science and government, we must develop global activities to prevent communist powers from establishing hegemony in the United Nations. If America does not do that, we need to do it. I have to take this action. In order to carry out this work, I have been making preparations of which you are not aware. Why are we doing this? We need to show a new direction to the United States, but we are not a recognized public voice. Therefore, we need to broaden our foundation and create a proper base. I am doing this in order to transfer this pressing mission fully to the people in the United States, so that they, in doing the will of heaven, will be able to contribute to the advancement of the democratic world. 5 Scholars in each ICUS committee are experts. They are clearly influential in their own fields. Nevertheless, there was not one among them who had a vision or determination to influence the whole world through uniting scholars in the academic community. Nonetheless, this is the effort we are making, and for this the Unification Church deserves appropriate recognition. If I continue this work, what I see happening is that I will inspire the brightest intellectuals in America to align with and assist in our activities to save America.

Because scholars gather at international academic conferences restricted to their own fields or specialties, the themes of those conferences are often quite limited. However, we hold an assembly that interconnects all fields and specialties, so I envisage that this conference will reach the world level and gather more than 70 Nobel prizewinners. Viewed in this way, these academic conferences are unprecedented.

It is my vision that the ten major universities in America will each align with a Nobel laureate, enabling them to take the lead and indicate the direction toward the future. My hope for the science conferences is that the universities will systematically select professors to show the direction, and that students will also mobilize to build their own movement. 6 The first ICUS was held in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. At that time, 32 scholars attended, and I was sitting in the corner like an errand boy without anyone noticing whether I was there or not. However, even though I could not speak English back then, I gave an address as the founder. We continued to hold such conferences over the ensuing years and the outcome was good. People started saying that it was Reverend Moon, not the chairman, who did a good job. Having come to this point, the worlds scholars began to respect and welcome me as their elder. If I were to visit any country in the world, invite the scholars who attended our science conferences and host a big banquet, I would be able to bring together hundreds of other people too. We already have a global foundation of this magnitude. (107-221, 1980/05/19)
 
7 ICUS was created to prepare the foundation to mobilize the great scholars of the world. The second conference was held in Tokyo, and we let famous professors, mainly from Tokyo University, lead the group of well-known scholars. As the founder of that conference, I intended to give the opening remarks. An address given by the host would be reasonable in any organization, but I discovered that my speech was completely left out of the program. Therefore, that evening I turned things upside down. I felt they held me in contempt and I corrected their attitude.

Up until that time, people who did not have a chance to meet me on previous occasions thought they would see a person wearing some sort of royal crown or having some important title and wearing a long flowing robe. People who were oblivious to my identity were still wondering, "Who is this Moon person, the founder of the Unification Church?" Even when I was walking up to the stage, people were still looking around, trying to see this person named Moon. In such upside-down circumstances, I smiled and began my speech, standing in a dignified manner. I said, "I am standing here with the destiny of Asia and the world at stake." (109-235, 1980/11/01)
 
8 The first ICUS was held in New York City, and the second was held in Tokyo. Now we are holding the third in London. The 4'h will be held in New York City again. In doing this, we are creating a movement that gathers the great stars of the world stage, the stars of the academic world. By the 4lh conference, when international celebrities speak again and it comes to light that a significant number of Nobel prizewinners are participating here, the conference will approach the world level and will be publicized on a grand scale. This means we are building a foundation and will no longer need to be embarrassed, even when relating with the media.

Therefore, after the New York conference, we want to call scholars from around the world to begin this work in earnest. Until that time, we will pull these scholars from in front and push them along from behind. We are taking action in order to move the world into the future. Mobilizing distinguished international scholars through interdisciplinary conferences will be the basis to move the world. (071-173, 1974/04/30)
 
9 In November 1975, scholars of 60 nationalities gathered for the ICUS. We invited them to New York City and hosted a banquet. It was attended by 350 world-renowned scholars, including Nobel prizewinners. This has been continuing for the past five years. By the sixth year, all scholars will have heard about ICUS. To accompany those events, I plan to strengthen the worldwide Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) and bring it into unity with those scholars. If you are going to move the world, you start by moving university campuses. The worlds campuses create ideas that impact the media world and economic world. 10 Even if you hold a PhD, you must understand not only your own field, but other fields as well. That is why I formed ICUS to break down the walls in the academic world. For example, those who study the natural sciences do not know very much about other fields. They do not know the fields of economics or political science. I created ICUS to establish a common base among scholars from all these fields. (375-238, 2002/04/15)
 
11 I established ICUS, which gathers world-renowned scientists. At first, they said on various public occasions that they suspected we were trying to use their names. Even if we were to use them, there is nothing in what we did that would ruin them or affect them adversely. I would like to ask them, who broke down the walls in the academic world? Natural scientists usually do not talk with economists, political scientists or philosophers, even if they meet each other at their universities. By developing a movement that enables top scholars to experience each other as brothers and sisters beyond race and ethnicity, I have established a foundation that will develop a transnational realm of heart and history, and that is one of history's greatest achievements. It was I who decided the themes of the conferences. Therefore, the scholars were impressed with me. History will honor me for this great accomplishment. (351-305, 2001/08/28)
 
12 In relation to ICUS, our first mission is to select important people. First, you must make recommendations. Important scholars need to be selected. Second, forming long-term relationships is important. Do not form only temporary relationships. Once you make a relationship, you need to maintain it and develop it. You need to make the effort to establish long-term relationships. Scholars must not just attend the science conference once and then drop out. Third, in the future we need to organize conferences in such a way that the expenses for the professors from America will be taken care of by the professors home state. Furthermore, other nations also need to take responsibility for the expenses incurred by the professors they send. Only then will this conference expand on the international level. Fourth, we need to inspire these scholars to serve as editors. In the future, when we create newspaper companies in various countries, these people will surely be competent to some degree to act as editors. Therefore, we must prepare from now on to involve them on a practical level. You need to take this responsibility. From now on, please take an interest in ICUS. Select important people, form long-term relationships, clarify funding responsibilities, and tackle the problems inherent in mobilizing campuses, the media, and so on. (088-177, 1976/08/10)
