Last night marked Week 15 of our class's salsa journey — Level 3, Week 3 — which means 110 Volts has officially descended into the pits of despair!! It's a bit dramaticㅋㅋ but many of us are struggling with confidence right now. These new moves are tough, and it’s easy to start wondering if we’ve learned anything at all.
But last night, I felt a flicker of hope return again.
The Level 2 course ended on a high note. My self-assurance was up, social dancing was going well, and I felt like I was genuinely progressing!
Then Level 3 hit and suddenly everything became more demanding. Out movements require sharper timing, precise technique, and real finesse. The whipping turn is now the bane of my existence. And just when I thought I understood the Apache, 노리 kindly informed me that I did not.
On top of that, I’m learning all of this in a Korean context, which means I basically live in a constant state of confusion during class. So my best strategy is to become 강셉’s motion-capture avatar.
He steps — I step.
He turns — I turn.
It’s not pretty, but I do the best I can.
Still, last night something finally came together somewhat well.
The new pattern: CBL → maintain right-to-left connection → signal turn on 6 → lift on 7 → turn under on 1 → land shoulder-to-shoulder on 2
Then: inside turn → stop on shoulder → unwind
Then: follow-behind variation → go under again
Finish: left-hand signal turn → right-hand catch turn → back to basic
For the first time this course, the mechanics actually connected a little with my body movements. It wasn’t perfect, but I really got a sense of the concept and that felt great.
Another takeaway for me was a reminder of the importance being mindful of the person I’m dancing with.
Whenever I danced with 세리, our height difference could create some challenges, especially when I have to go under the arch of her arm. I could practically hear 강셉 thinking:
“Why doesn’t this foreigner bend his knees more?”
Fair point — I’m trying.
강셉 and 노리 also emphasized being gentle. Because it’s not all about perfect execution. It’s also about being considerate. That’s something I need to actively remember.
During the social after class, something clicked. My confidence came back a little. I hit pieces of the combo here and there. I didn’t injure anyone. And I even got a couple of compliments from upperclassmen, which felt fantastic and really made me walk away feeling good about myself again.
At this stage, I’m gaining a greater consciousness of how dynamic salsa really is: tension and release, circular movement, timing, push and pull, momentum. Finding that balance is tricky, but it’s exciting to feel it developing.
So yes, 110 Volts is in a challenging chapter right now. But moments like last night are proof that we’re moving up the ladder, even if the rung feels slippery.
We’re still charging ⚡
And I believe every one of us is going to hit a breakthrough soon.
Thanks 강셉 for the clear demonstrations.
Thanks 노리 for the energy and encouragement.
And thank you to all my 110기 classmates for pushing through this with me.
See you next week — with slightly deeper knees and slightly lighter hearts.

I’m really happy learning bachata with Link!
I'm also short, so I often end up on my tiptoes.
But Link is always smiling and considerate😄, which makes social dancing really enjoyable. Whenever I go to socials, I naturally look for Link first.
Let’s keep learning and having fun dancing together💃🏻🕺🏻
로미 is also always smiling and a pleasure to dance with too! I'm excited to continue learning bachata together!
