Rome 1:1~7 ---
Rome was the most prosperous and value-neutral city among those Paul visited. His missionary strategy followed several core principles: city-centered and synagogue-centered. He focused on densely populated urban areas, especially Jewish synagogues where people were already familiar with the Old Testament. When faced with opposition from the Jews, he would shift his ministry to those—both Jews and Gentiles—who accepted the gospel.
Although Paul began his ministry in Jewish synagogues, the strongest opposition came from Jewish gatherings. This was due to his anti-legalistic stance. The early church, centered in Jerusalem, maintained Christianity without severing ties to the various regulations of the Law. Jesus, Peter, and all twelve apostles were Jews, and even Jesus himself adopted a Jewish-centered missionary approach.
From the Jewish perspective, Paul appeared to be a radical, anti-legalistic, and anti-national figure who needed to be eliminated. However, his mission to the Gentiles faithfully followed the command of the resurrected Jesus to spread the gospel to Samaria and the ends of the earth, laying the foundation for the globalization of Christianity.
Moreover, the teachings Paul presented in the book of Romans became essential reading for the Reformation and provided its ideological foundation, especially the doctrine of justification by faith. Paul recognized that a clear break from the Law was the only way to fully realize the power of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
Interpretations of the crucifixion that rely on Judaism and the Law as essential backgrounds are blind spots of false teachers from Jewish origins and threaten the core beliefs of Gentile churches. The early church’s decision not to impose circumcision, Sabbath observance, festivals, and other burdens on Gentiles affirmed Paul’s role as the apostle to the Gentiles and liberated the gospel from the shackles of the Law, propelling it toward all nations.
Those called to belong to Christ are no longer distinguished as Jew or Gentile. Paul’s doctrine—that the only connection to Jesus is through faith in the cross and his sacrifice—demonstrates that even as a devout Jew educated in the Pharisaic tradition under Gamaliel, he understood that all requirements of the Law were paid on the cross and fulfilled through the resurrection.
By shedding the facade of human effort and self-righteousness, and being cleansed by the blood of the cross, only the renewed person can, through the power of the Holy Spirit, fulfill God’s will on earth. Thus, we must humbly remember his sacrifice today and earnestly seek mercy to join the ranks of the righteous who discipline themselves in obedience.
