Yesterday I had the chance to attend Basic Training, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable dance classes I’ve experienced so far : )
At first, I thought the class was called “TURN Basic,” but I later learned it’s actually called Basic Training. I found this kind of funny since that phrase sounds similar to military boot camp. And the class lives up to the name because it’s far more physical than a typical salsa or bachata class, and by the end of it, everyone around me was sweating and out of breath.
It felt like conditioning for dancers. I think the goal is building strength, balance, control, and stamina, not just learning steps.
Instructor 성우 was outstanding. He gave extremely detailed, personalized feedback, and I was especially grateful that he explained things in English as well. Early on, he corrected me on foundational details:
lifting the knees properly
landing with the whole foot (like a controlled stomp)
correct hip placement
clean arm movement
keeping the head level and avoiding unnecessary bouncing
These micro-details made a huge difference. He demonstrated everything clearly at the front, giving us a strong visual model to emulate.
We worked through many variations of the basic step: side basics, front and back basics, and also the mambo basic, which was new and fun for me. One main move of focus was the Suzy Q. We must have spent 10–15 minutes drilling it. It became a serious cardio workout!
Later, we worked on partner shines, how to add individual flair and expression within a partner dance. I really enjoyed this part. One of the main reasons I started dancing was to develop my own style and express myself more freely, and this class really helped me work toward that goal.
I’m deeply thankful to 성우 for letting me take this class, and all the classmates for being so welcoming. After these experiences, I’m completely hooked and definitely plan to take Basic Training next session.
Thank you to everyone in the class, it was
a total blast!~~
