The Lotus Sutra 妙法蓮華經 方便品 87

[석원/觀性]

87.諸佛滅度已에 供養舍利者가

起萬億種塔호대 金銀及玻瓈와

硨磲與瑪瑙와 玫瑰琉璃珠로

淸淨廣嚴飾하야 莊校於諸搭하며

或有起石廟호대 栴檀及沈水와

木樒幷餘材와 甎瓦泥土等하며

若於曠野中에 積土成佛廟호대

乃至童子戱로 聚沙爲佛搭한이는

如是諸人等이 皆已成佛道니라

After the Buddhas have passed into extinction,

if persons make offerings to the relics,

raising ten thousand or a million kinds of towers,

using gold, silver and crystal,

seashell and agate,

carnelian, lapis lazuli, pearls

to purify and adorn them extensively,

in this way erecting towers;

or if they raise up stone mortuary temples

or those of sandalwood or aloes,

hovenia or other kinds of timber,

or of brick, tile clay or earth;

if in the midst of the broad fields

they pile up earth to make a mortuary temple for the Buddhas,

or even if little boys at play

should collect sand to make a Buddha tower,

then persons such as these

여러 부처님이 열반에 드신 후 사리에 공양하는 사람이

천 만 억의 탑을 세울 때 금과 은과 파리와

자거와 마노와 매괴와 유리와 진주 등으로 만들고

아름답고 훌륭한 장엄거리로서 찬란하게 탑을 꾸미며,

또는 석굴을 파서 불당을 짓기도 하고, 전단향과 침수향으로 짓기도 하고,

목밀(木樒)나무나 다른 재목이나 벽돌과 도기나 진흙으로 짓기도 하고,

넓은 벌판에 흙을 쌓아서 불당을 짓거나,

또는 아이들이 장난으로 모래를 쌓아 불탑을 만든 이들도

이런 사람들은 모두 이미 성불하였느니라.

other kinds of timber 다른 재목

brick 벽돌

tile clay 도기

earth 진흙

in the midst of the broad fields 넓은 벌판에

they pile up earth 흙을 쌓다

make a mortuary temple for the Buddhas, 불당을 짓다

make a Buddha tower, 불탑을 만들다

attained the Buddha way 성불하다

When those Buddhas have become extinct

If there are those with compliant hearts,

Beings such as these

Have attained the Buddha Way.

After the extinction of those Buddhas,

Those who have made offerings to their Sharira,

Building millions of kinds of stupas,

Made of gold, silver, or of crystal,

Mother-of-peark, carnelian,

Rose quartz, lapis lazuli, and other gems,

Clear, pure and most ornate,

Worked to grace the stupas,

Or should there be those who've built temples

Out of stone, chandana, or aloeswood,

Hovenia, or other timbers,

Bricks, clay, and the like,

Or those who, in the barren wastes,

Have piled up earth into a Buddha-shrine,

Or even children who, at play,

Have piled up sand to make a stupa,

All persons such as these,
