오직 의인은 믿음으로 (롬 1:8~17) The righteous will live by faith.

로마는 바울에게 기회의 땅이었습니다. 로마법과 그리스 문화와 통일된 언어와 잘 닦인 도로망은 복음이 전해지기 가장 좋은 환경으로 최적화되어 있었습니다. 그리고 바울의 로마 시민권은 요즘 선진국의 여권파워 이상의 편의를 제공해 주었습니다. 법적 보호와 특권, 정치,사회,경제적 혜택과 제국내에서의 자유로운 이동이 가능했습니다.

로마교회는 바울의 방문전에 이미 잘 조직되어 활발하게 활동을 하고 있었습니다. 바울은 남이 닦아놓은 터위에 집을 짓지 않는다는 선교원칙을 가지고 있었읍니다만 로마교회와의 교류를 통해 전하고자 하는 목적이 있었습니다.

당시 기독교는 지금처럼 온전한 형태로 전승되지 않았던 것으로 보입니다. 요한의 세례만 알고 있다는 공동체에 성령의 세례를 전한 사건이나(행19:1~7) 바울의 유력한 동역자였던 브리스길라와 아굴라부부가 아볼로에게 그리스도의 도를 상세하게 풀어 설명함으로 효과적인 복음전파를 도왔던 사건(행18:24), 그리고 로마교회를 향한 바울의 신령한 은사를 나누어주고자 하는 열망이 그 사실을 뒷받침해 줍니다.(롬1:11)

여기서 주목할 점은 신령한 은사가 교회를 견고히 한다는 점입니다. 현대교회의 은사주의자들에 대한 부정적 평가는 교회를 혼란에 빠뜨리고 지도력에 대한 불복종과 불신을 조장하는 등의 좋지 않은 열매때문입니다. 물론 지도자들의 은사에 대한 몰이해와 부정적인 견해가 한 몫을 하기도 했습니다.

은사는 교회를 돕기위해 성령께서 그 뜻대로 각 사람에게 나누어 주시는 (고전12:11) 하나님의 선물입니다. 삽으로 하던 일을 불도저로, 수작업으로 하던 일을 컨베어 벨트로 자동화시키는 것 같은 효과를 냅니다. 그러나 새로운 형태의 은사활용에 대한 두려움과 낯설음이 하나님의 선물을 터부시하는 결과를 낳았습니다.

초대교회는 은사에 대해 전혀 배타적이지 않았습니다. 이미 축사와 치유, 예언과 방언에 대한 구약적 배경은 자연스럽게 하나님의 은사를 활용하며 복음의 진보에 기여한 바 있습니다.(막16:20, 행19:11~20) 오히려 바울은 하나님의 선물을 사모하라고 명한 바 있습니다. 말씀을 성령에 감동되어 기록된 하나님의 명령으로 믿는다면 은사를 사모하는 것은 믿는 자에게 당연하고도 필수적인 것입니다. (고전 14:1)

바울은 복음을 부끄러워하지 않는 이유가 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력이 됨이라고 합니다. (For it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believe) 하나님의 능력은 모든 믿는 자에게 구원을 주시는 일을 하며 그 주체는 성령님이십니다. 예수님의 부활 이후 성령시대가 시작되었고 이제 성령님은 교회위에 운행하시며 교회를 보호하시고 가르치시며 인도하시는 강한 능력으로 역사하고 계십니다.

오늘도 교회를 위로하시고 격려하시며 가르치시고 생각나게 하시는 지혜의 성령님을 힘입어 강하고 담대하게 사단의 강한 진을 부수는 권능으로 세상을 이기고 자신을 이기고 어둠을 밝히는 성도님들 되시기 바랍니다.

Rome: A Land of Opportunity for Paul

Rome was a land of opportunity for Paul. Roman law, Greek culture, a unified language, and a well-developed road network were all optimized to create the best possible environment for the spread of the Gospel. Furthermore, Paul's Roman citizenship provided conveniences far exceeding the power of a modern developed nation's passport, offering legal protection and privileges, political, social, and economic benefits, and free movement within the empire.

The church in Rome was already well-organized and actively functioning even before Paul's visit. Although Paul had a missionary principle of not building on foundations laid by others, he had a specific purpose in seeking communion with the Roman church.

It seems that Christianity, at that time, was not yet transmitted in its complete form as it is today. This is supported by events such as Paul explaining the baptism of the Holy Spirit to a community that only knew John's baptism (Acts 19:1-7), and the couple Priscilla and Aquila, Paul's influential co-workers, helping in effective evangelism by more accurately explaining the way of Christ to Apollos (Acts 18:24). Moreover, Paul's earnest desire to impart some spiritual gift to the Roman church (Romans 1:11) further corroborates this fact.

What is noteworthy here is that spiritual gifts strengthen the church. The negative perception of charismatics in the modern church stems from undesirable fruits, such as throwing the church into confusion and fostering disobedience and distrust towards leadership. Of course, leaders' misunderstanding and negative views on these gifts have also played a part.

Gifts are God's presents, distributed by the Holy Spirit to each person as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11), to help the church. They have an effect akin to replacing manual labor with bulldozers, or automating manual work with conveyor belts. However, fear and unfamiliarity with new forms of utilizing these gifts have unfortunately led to God's gifts being treated as taboo.

The early church was not at all exclusive regarding gifts. The Old Testament background for exorcism, healing, prophecy, and speaking in tongues naturally allowed them to utilize God's gifts and contribute to the advancement of the Gospel (Mark 16:20, Acts 19:11-20). On the contrary, Paul commanded believers to eagerly desire God's gifts. If one believes the Word, inspired by the Holy Spirit, to be God's command, then desiring spiritual gifts is natural and essential for a believer (1 Corinthians 14:1).

Paul states that the reason he is not ashamed of the Gospel is because "it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes." God's power brings salvation to all who believe, and the primary agent is the Holy Spirit. The Age of the Spirit began after Jesus' resurrection, and now the Holy Spirit moves upon the church, protecting, teaching, and guiding it with powerful might.

Today, may you, as saints, be strengthened by the Holy Spirit of wisdom, who comforts, encourages, teaches, and reminds the church. May you boldly and courageously break down the strongholds of Satan, overcoming the world and yourselves, and shining light into the darkness.
