"Carrots, Eggs, & Coffee"

    "CARROTS, EGGS, and  COFFEE "

A young woman went to her mother and told her

about her life and how things were so hard for her. 

She did not know how she was going to make

it and wanted to give up.  

She was tired of fighting and struggling. 

It seemed as if as soon as one problem was solved a

new one arose.  

Her mother took her to the kitchen.

한 젊은 여자가 인생이 너무 피곤하여 하소연하러 어머니를 찾아갔습니다. 

수없이 많은 문제에 빠져 헤어 나오지 못하고 난마처럼 얽힌 문제를

어떻게 풀어야할지 몰랐던 것이지요.

가까스로 한 문제를 해결하면 또 다른 문제가 터지곤 했습니다. 

어머니는 딸을 부엌으로 데리고 갔습니다. 

The mother filled three pots with water.
In the first, she placed carrots.
In the second she placed eggs.
And the last she placed ground coffee beans.

어머니는 찻주전자 세 개를 준비하고 물을 부었습니다. 

첫째 주전자에는 당근을 넣고, 둘째 주전자에는 달걀을 넣었습니다. 

마지막 세 번째 주전자에는 커피 원두를 몇 개을 가루를 만들어 넣었습니다.

She let them sit and boil without saying a word. 

About twenty minutes later, she turned off the burners.

어머니는 딸을 옆에 앉히고는 말없이 물을 끓였습니다.

20여 분이 지난 후 불을 끄었습니다.

She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. 

She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. 

Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

첫 번째 주전자에서 당근을 꺼내 접시에 담았습니다

두 번째 주전자에서는 삶은 달걀을 거내 역시 접시에 담아 두었고,

마지막 세 번째 주전자를 기울여 커피 잔에 따랐습니다. 

Turning to her daughter, she said, "Tell me what you see."
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee,"

she replied. (You known the tone of voice.)

딸을 향해 돌아서더니 이렇게 묻는 것이었습니다.

"네가 보는 것이 무엇이니” 
"당근, 달걀, 그리고 커피네요.” 딸이 대답했습니다. 

She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots.

She did, and noted that they felt soft.
She then asked her to take an egg and break it.

After pulling off the shell, 

she observed the hard-boiled egg inside.

Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. 

The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma

어머니는 딸에게 당근 맛을 보라고 했습니다.

먹어보니 아주 부드러웠습니다. 

달걀껍질도 벗겨 보라고 했습니다.

그러자 단단하게 변한 달걀이 나왔습니다. . 
어머니가 이번에는 딸에게 커피 한 모금을 마셔 보라고 했습니다. 

딸은 미소를 지으며 맛을 보니 커피에서는 풍성한 향기가

넘쳐나고 있었습니다. 

The daughter then asked,

"So, what's the point, mother?"

(Remember the tone of voice.)
Her mother explained that each of these objects

had faced the same adversity

 - boiling water - but each reacted differently.

딸은 어머니, 이게 무슨 뜻이지요?

어머니가 말했습니다.

 “이 모든 재료들이 불이라는 똑같은 역경을 각자 만났지만

결과는 너무나 판이하게 차이가 나는구나".

The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting.

However, after being subjected to the boiling water, 

it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. 

Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid center.

But, after sitting through the boiling water,

its insides had become hardened.
The ground coffee beans were unique,

however.  After they were in the boiling water...

they had changed the water.

당근은 원래 단단한 것이었지만 끓는 물에 집어넣었더니

나약해지고 말았고, 달걀은 얇고 단단한 껍질이 감싸고 있을 뿐 속은

부드러운 액체였는데 끓는 물속에  들어가더니 딱딱해지고 말았어.

그러나 이 커피를 보렴. 커피 원두는 보잘 것 없었지만 

끓는 물속에 들어가더니 그 물을 변화시키지 않았니.


"Which are you?"

she asked her daughter. 

"When adversity knocks on your
door, how do you respond? 

Are you a carrot , an egg, or a coffee bean?"
Think of this: Which am I ?

어머니는 계속 말씀을 이어가셨습니다.

“너는 이 가운데 어느 편에 속하느냐? 

역경이 다가오면 어떻게 반응하니?

당근이 될래? 달걀이 될래?

아니면 커피 원두가 될래?” 
생각해 보아라 : 너는 어디에 속하니? 

Am I the carrot that seems strong,

but with pain and adversity, do I wilt
and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart,

but changes with the heat?

처음에는 당근처럼 단단했지만 고통과 역경을 만나 힘을 잃고

나약해지고 말았습니까? 

처음에는 달걀 속처럼 유순한 사람이었지만 역경을 만나 마음이

굳어지지는 않았는지요? 

Did I have a fluid spirit,

but after a death, a breakup, a financial
hardship, or some other trial,

have I become hardened and stiff ?  

Does my outer shell look the same,

but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit 

and a hardened heart?

처음에는 부드러운 마음의 소유자였지만 경제적 어려움,

주위의 어려운 환경 때문에 삶은 

달걀처럼 속마음이 굳어져 버리지는 않았을까요?

그러면서도 삶기 전이나 삶은 후에도 똑같은 

달걀껍질처럼 외면으로만 태연한 척 하지는 않습니까? 

Or am I like the coffee bean? 

The bean actually changes the hot water -

the very circumstances 

that bring the pain. 

When the water gets hot,

it releases the fragrance and flavor of the bean.  

If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst,

you get better and change the situation 

around you instead of letting it change you.

아니면 커피 원두와 같은 사람입니까?

커피 원두는 그 뜨거운 고난이라는 주위 환경의 물을 통째로 

변화시키고 맙니다.

뜨거운 물 속에 들어간 커피 원두는 향과 맛을 발산해 냅니다. 

당신이 만약 이 커피 원두와 같다면 최악의 주변 상황을

좋은 것으로 바꿔놓게 될 것입니다.
