사람들을 만나다보면 여러 종류의 느낌을 받습니다. 빈집같이 마음이 텅빈 사람, 온갖 욕심이 가득한 사람, 고슴도치같이 마음을 찔러서 아프게 하는 사람, 매의 눈같이 상대의 흠집을 찾아내는 사람, 누구의 이야기도 듣지 않는 고집센 사람들이 있습니다.

바울은 로마서를 통해 인간 실존의 바닥을 보여줍니다. 하나님을 밀어내는 어리석은 생각이 마음의 중심에 앉아 있으면서 마땅히 그 분께서 받으셔야 할 영광을 요구하는 모습을 봅니다. 그리고 사람이 지키면 생명을 얻을 말씀을 멀리하고 스스로 지혜롭게 여기며 멸망길로 달려가는 뒷모습은 씁쓸하고 안타까운 마음의 여운을 남깁니다.

그들이 마음에 하나님 두기를 싫어하기에 그 상실한 마음을 내버려두셨다는 것은 인간의 근본적 비극을 보여줍니다. 하나님을 잃어버린 사람의 마음은 혼돈과 공허로 가득합니다.

바울의 입을 통해 이런 비참한 실체를 밝히신 것은 사람에게 도움의 손길이 필요하다는 것입니다. 초자연적인 능력으로 우리를 선한 길로 이끄시는 성령의 능력이 아니면 아무도 이 허망한 삶의 의미를 설명해 줄 이가 없습니다. 의미를 알아도 스스로 달려갈 수 없는 영적 불구인 우리를 선한 손길로 이끌어줄 능력이 세상엔 없습니다. 오직 하나님의 지혜와 능력만이 우리를 선한 길로 이끌며 그 분의 긍휼과 자비가 어리석은 마음에 지혜를 줍니다.

지금도 우리곁에 가까이 다가와 손 내미시며 다정한 눈빛으로 나의 어둔 눈에 빛을 보이시고 활력을 잃은 심장을 만지시며 일어나라고 함께 가자고 권유하시는 사랑의 은혜를 힘입습니다. 결코 너를 떠나지 않고 버리지 않겠다는 약속을 의지하고 다시 주를 바라봅니다.

Encounters with Humanity

When I meet people, I encounter various types of feelings. Some people have hearts as empty as a vacant house, others are filled with all kinds of greed. There are those who prick and wound others like a hedgehog, some who find fault like a hawk's eye, and stubborn ones who listen to no one's words.

Through the Book of Romans, Paul reveals the very depths of human existence. We see foolish thoughts pushing God away, settling in the core of the heart, yet demanding the glory that is rightfully due to Him. And the sight of people turning away from the word that, if kept, would bring life, instead deeming themselves wise and rushing down the path of destruction, leaves a bitter and regrettable aftertaste.

The fact that God abandoned their depraved minds because they refused to acknowledge Him in their hearts illustrates the fundamental tragedy of humanity. A heart that has lost God is filled with chaos and emptiness.

Paul's revelation of this miserable reality implies that humanity desperately needs a helping hand. Without the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, who leads us on a good path, no one can explain the meaning of this futile life. Even if we understand the meaning, there is no power in this world that can lead us, who are spiritual cripples unable to walk on our own, by a benevolent hand. Only God's wisdom and power can guide us on a good path, and His compassion and mercy impart wisdom to foolish hearts.

Even now, we are sustained by the grace of love—He draws near, reaching out His hand, shining light into my darkened eyes with a tender gaze, touching my lifeless heart, and inviting me to rise and walk with Him. Relying on His promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us, I look to the Lord once again.
