스트라토바리우스 멤버들인 티모 톨키(기타), 야리 카이누라이넨(베이스), 그리고 최근의 그룹 오디션에서 뽑힌 "Miss K" (카트리나 위알라의 별칭)과의 새로운 인터뷰가 밴드의 공식 홈페이지에 게시되었다.

Q : 새로운 라인업이 지난 화요일(1/15)에 발표되었는데, 미디어뿐만 아니고 많은 사람들이 꽤나 놀란듯 하다. 이런 반응들에 대해 어떻게 생각하는가?

T : 놀랄일이다. 20통 가까이되는 이메일을 받았고, 나를 직접적으로 협박하는 내용도 있었다. 그들이 진심이든 아니든간에 당연히 기분이 좋지는 않다. 악감정의 크기가 최근 스트라토바리우스에 합류한 Miss K.에게 또한 좋지 않을거라 확신한다.

K : 어... 그런 것에 대해서는 상관하지 않는다. 내가 여기서 생각하는 것은 나의 경력이다. 나는 모든 것을 엔터네이너의 관점으로 본다. 나는 엔터테이너이다. 우리가 많은 시간동안 만나면서 내 인생이나 음악, 그리고 모든 것에 대해 이야기를 나눈 후 티모 톨키가 나에게 밴드에 합류해 달라고 요청방았다. 우리는 함께 많은 데모를 만들었고 새로운 곡들은 정말 좋은 사운드가 나왔다. 하지만 티모 코티펠토가 떠났다는 소식을 들었을때 그에게 연락은 한 것은 나이다. 나는 내 기회를 보았고 그것을 잡았으며 그래서 내가 여기에 있다. 머무르는 것을 좋아하든 싫어하든 간에 말이다.

J : 나는 그런 반응들에 대해서는 몰랐다. 지난주 내내 잭다니얼스만 마시고 있었으니... 어떤 반응 말인가? 나의 반응은 아침마다 토한것 밖에 없다... ㅡ_ㅡ;;;

Q : 흠... 알겠다... 지금은 좀 나아졌기를 바란다...

티모 : 내가 걱정하는 것은 멤버 교체에 대한 악감정이 팬들사이에서 형성되고 있다는 것이다. 그것은 내가 어떻게 하건 간에 매우 괴롭힐 것이다. 개인적으로 스트라토바리우스 팬들을 위해 몇년동안 많은 곡들을 선사했고, 많은 공연을 했고, 수많은 인터뷰를 했다.나는 할만큼 했다. 그리고 여전히 그들은 내가 그들을 존중하지 않는다고 말하는데 이 이상 어떻게 존중할 수가 있는가? 존중이란 상호적인 것이다. 나에게서 나오는 그런 표출은 스트라토바리우스 팬이라고 지칭하는 사람들에게서 나오는 폭력적이고 오만한 행위에 대한 반응이다. 그리고 지금 사람들이 보는 피는 그들의 현실 도피를 이야기한다. (Miss K의 사진을 참조하시오. 그런데 그것은 진짜 피였음!!)

Q : Miss K, 이 피범벅 사진에 대한 느낌과 사진에서 중지를 보인 이유를 말해달라.

K : 나는 피를 좋아한다. 엘리자베스 바쏘리는 젊은 처녀들의 피로 목욕하곤 했다지 않는가. 그것은 나를 흥분시켰다. 언젠가 그걸 시도할거라고 생각하지 않는가? 나는 아침으로 아기들을 먹곤 하지. 하하하... (ㅡ_ㅡ;;;;) 하지만 중지는 아무도 지목하지 않는다. 하지만 타란티노 감독의 "킬빌"을 보았는가?

Q : 아니 아직. 야리, 당신은 이 피범벅 사진을 보았나?

J : 내 아파트에서 산악자전거를 타느라 바빴기 때문에 아직 사진을 보지 못했다. 반면에 공원에서 밀실공포증이 나를 덮쳤다. 정말 힘들었다. (ㅡ_ㅡ;;; 말하고자 하는 요지가 뭔지...)

Q : 티모, 듣기로 당신은 보드카를 병째로 마신다던데, 이유가 있는가?

T : 모든 폭력은 인간이 과거로부터 충분히 교훈을 받지 못했음을 증명한다. 이것을 가정해 보자. 일반 록 밴드가 이렇듯 너무도 많은 미움을 사고 직접적인 살인 위협을 받을 수 있다면 더 큰일은 어떨것이며 정말 문제가 있는 일은 또 어떻겠는가? 스트라토바리우스 팬들의 이런 빌어먹을 반응을 보면서 왜 세상에 아직도 전쟁이 있는지 의문이 있는가? 그게 내가 보드카를 병째로 마시는 이유이다.

Q : 여전히 치료를 받는 중인가?

T : 이제 그만뒀다. 하지만 다시 가봐야 할 것 같다. 아마도 항우울증 처방을 다시 받아야 할 것 같다. 이 모든 일들 때문에 밴드 멤버 단체료 치료를 받는게 필요할 듯 하다. 독일에 정말 좋은 단체 치료사가 있다는 이야기를 들었으며 그는 록그룹의 문제에 전문가라고 한다. 반면에 나는 생추어리로 보터 1500만달러의 소송에 직면해 있다. 그래서 지금 나는 어쨌건 상황이 좋지는 않다.

Q : 당신이 12살때 아버지의 자살을 목격했는데, 그것을 극복했나?

T : 그것은 당신의 문제가 아니다. 왜 그걸 물어보는가? 나는 그것을 결코 잊지 못한다. 당신 아버지가 눈앞에서 면도날로 손목을 긋고 4층에서 뛰어내린다면 그것이 아무런 영향을 끼치지 않을 것 같은가?

Q : 물어봐서 미안하다. 미안하다 티모.

T : 어... 괜찮다. 당신네 기자들은 빌어먹을 잡지를 더 팔아먹고 싶을 뿐이니깐. 다 안다. 이해한다고.

Q : 스트라토바리우스의 신곡은 어떤지?

K : 우리는 톨키가 신중히 선정한 이전의 몇곡을 불러보았다. 하지만 나는 모든 곡들을 부를 수 있다. 내 음역으로는 "Father time"이나 다른 모든 곡들을 소화하는데 문제가 없다. 새로운 곡들은 톨키가 앞으로는 밴드들에게 곡에 대해 미리 말해주지 않는 새로운 심리적인 프로듀싱 스타일을 시도하느라 많이 연습해보진 못했다. 우리는 기타리프만 알고 있고 그게 전부다. 그들은 이미 몇곡에 대한 녹음이 진행중인 것으로 생각한다.

J : 내 상태가 별로 안좋아서 리허설을 하지 못했다. 나는 항상 밴드에서 연주한다. 사실 그것은 내 밴드다. 당신네들은 이걸 모른다. 반면에 연주보다 내겐 더 중요한 일이 있다. 술마시는 것과 산악자전거를 타는 것이다. 하지만 내 산악자전거는 미국 달러로 25,000 달러이며 정말 좋은 장비이다.

Q : Miss K, 이전 밴드 Aurora K에서의 보컬 퍼포먼스는 스트라토바리우스 팬들사이에서 혹평하는 이들이 많은데.

K : 이해한다. 그곡들은 몇년전에 녹음했으며 항상 기타리스트에게 곡들을 쓸때 나에게 제발 키를 좀 맞춰달라고 이야기했었다. 항상 너무 낮았지만 그는 결코 듣지 않았다. 사실 아마추어 밴드였고 사실 한 사람의 노래였지 밴드도 아니었다.

티모 : 나는 Miss K를 선택할 때 결코 그 사운드클립을 듣고 선택한것이 아니다. 솔직히 그것들은 매우 조잡하다. 누가 그렇게 생각하지 않겠는가? 나는 Miss K를 몇번 만나보고 삶과 음악에 대해 이야기하고 함께 연주해보며 확신했다. 그는 정말 뛰어난 보컬이며 그들이 노래를 듣게되면 결국에는 모두들 놀랄것이다. 내 견해로는 그녀의 이전 밴드 곡들은 형편없었다. 프로듀싱도 조잡했고 Miss K와는 전혀 틀린 키를 가지고 있었다. 그녀의 재능은 묻혀지고 이제 그녀는 그녀가 진정으로 할 수 있는 것을 증명할 수 있는 기회를 잡은 것이다.

(이 시점에서 톨키가 너무 취해 거의 말을 할 수 없었으므로 인터뷰는 잠시 중단되었다. 그의 비서가 그를 쉬게하고 Miss K와 한동안 이야기를 나누었다.)

Q : 그래서 Miss K, 티모 톨키를 어떻게 보는가?

K : 나에게 있어서 그는 신사이다. 그는 내 느낌과 두려움(어... 나는 때때로 무척 겁에 질린다), 내 바램을 들어준다. 나는 그와 같은 사람을 전에 만나본 적이 없다. 알다시피 그는 아버지의 자살 이후로 거의 심리 요법사가 되었다. 그것은 그를 심하게 상처입혔다. 그는 서재에 600권 이상의 책이 있으며 영리하고 독서를 좋아하며 나에게 있어서는 정말 괜찮고 조용한 사람이다.
그런데 그는 알콜 문제가 있어서 그것이 너무 안좋다. 그는 항상 나에게 그에게 알콜 문제가 있는게 아니라 알콜이 그에게 문제라고 이야기한다. 그 방식의 유머이다. 정말 암울하다. 많은 사람들이 그가 글자 그대로 말할때 똑같이 옮기는데, 하지만 많은 경우 그것은 단지 유머에 불과하다.

(이 시점에서 티모가 돌아왔고 완전히 술이 깨서 놀랐다!!!)

T : 가끔씩 이런 발작이 일어난다. 미안하다. 나는 유전자가 모자라서 매우 쉽게 술에 취하고 매우 빨리 깬다. 가끔 그렇다... (유머... 일까?? ㅡ_ㅡ;;;)

Q : 알았다. 스트라토바리우스 팬들에게 마지막으로 한마디?

T : 나는 스트라토바리우스의 모든 고전들을 만든 사람이라는 것을 기억해라. 내가 작곡했다. 내가 Paradise를 썼고, Hunting을 썼고, Black diamond를 썼다!!! 내가 Father time을 작곡했으며 Kiss of Judas도 마찬가지다. 내가 모든 고전들을 완벽하게 썼고 또한 보컬 멜로디도 그렇다. 코티펠토는 단지 몇곡에 가사를 붙였을 뿐이지만 나에게 있어서는 음악이 정말 중요하다. 가사는 사실 넓게 보면 그다지 중요하지 않다. 그는 내 곡들 중에서 결코 곡이나 멜로디를 쓴 적이 없다. 단지 몇곡의 가사 뿐이다. 그리고 그가 쓴 가사가 포함된 곡의 제목은 항상 내가 결정했다. 알다시피 작곡은 항상 나다. 나는 항상 제목의 첫번째에 자리잡는다. 그러니 내게 내가 만들어 20년동안 유지한 밴드를 떠나라는 이야기는 하지 마라.

만약 내 결정을 이해할 수 없다면 안듣고 안사면 된다. 마음에 안들면 사지마라. 그래서 내가 말하고자 하는 바는, 일반적으로 팬들이 실망하는 요지는 내가 이해한다 하더라도, 멤버 변동과 관련하여 벌어지는 폭력과 편견은 내가 이해할 수 없으며 또한 받아들이지도 않을 것이다. 알다시피 이런 힘든 시간을 거친 후에 누가 진정한 친구인지를 알 수 있게 된다.

그리고 친구들, 결국 우리는 단지 록밴드일 뿐이다.

STRATOVARIUS Leader TIMO TOLKKI: 'My Life Has Been Threatened' - Jan. 18, 2004

A brand-new interview with STRATOVARIUS members Timo Tolkki (guitars), Jari Kainulainen (bass), and the group's latest addition, vocalist "Miss K" (a.k.a. Katriina Wiiala), has been posted online at the band's official web site.

Question: The new line up was announced on Thursday (Jan 15). It's all over the media and quite surprising for many people it seems. How do you feel about the reaction?

Timo Tolkki: "It is quite surprising. I have received about 20 emails, where my life has been threatened directly. Be them real or not, it surely doesn't feel nice. I am sure the amount of hatred doesn't feel nice for Miss K neither, who has just joined STRATOVARIUS."

Miss K: "Well, I don't care about those. It's my career that I am thinking about here. I see this whole thing from an entertainer's point of view. I am an entertainer. I was asked by Timo Tolkki to join this band after we had met many times, talked about life, music and all. We have made lots of demos together and the new songs sound really really promising. It was me who contacted him however, when I heard that Timo Kotipelto left the band. I saw my chance and I took it and here I am!! To stay, like it or not!!"

Jari K.: I don't know about the reaction, I have been drinking Jack Daniels for the whole week. What fucking reaction? The only reaction I know has been when I have been vomiting in the mornings.

Q : Hmm, I see. I hope you feel better already.

Timo Tolkki: "What makes me wonder is the amount of hate that this line-up change has generated among the fans. It seems I will be crucified, no matter what I do. I personally feel that I have given STRATOVARIUS fans a lot of music along the years, organized lots of tours and done thousands of interviews. I think I have given them a lot! And still they say I don't respect them and that I should respect them more? I say that respect is a mutual thing. All the outbursts from my side have only been reactions to very violent and arrogant reactions from people who call themselves 'STRATOVARIUS fans'. And now when people see a bit of blood [referring to the new photos of Miss K — Ed.] (it's real blood by the way), they freak out."

Q : Miss K, how do you feel about this blood issue and why are you showing your middle finger?

Miss K: I like blood. Elisabeth Bathory used to bathe in blood of young virgins. That sounds exciting to me! Do you think I should try that sometime? I eat babies for breakfast!! HAHAAAAAAHAAA!! The middle finger is not directed to anyone by the way!! But have you seen "Kill Bill" by Tarantino?

Q : No I haven't. Jari, how do you see this blood issue?

Jari K.: I haven't even seen the pictures. I have been too busy driving my mountainbike in my apartment. Besides, I just had a claustrophobic attack in the park. That was horrible.

Q : Timo Tolkki, you are drinking vodka straight from the bottle as we speak. Why are you doing that?

Timo Tolkki : This whole violence shows that mankind hasn't truly learned anything from the past. If you consider this: If a simple rock band is able to generate this much hate and direct death threats, then how is it with larger things and with things that REALLY matter? Is it any wonder why we still have wars in the world when you look at this fucking reaction from STRATOVARIUS fans? So that's why I am drinking vodka straight from the bottle.

Q : Are you still going to therapy?

Timo Tolkki : I quit that, but now I think I have to go back there. Perhaps start taking antidepressive medication again. This whole thing might make the whole band enter group therapy. I heard there is really good group therapist in Germany, who is specialized in problems of rock groups. Besides I am facing 1,5 Million Dollars lawsuit from Sanctuary, so it's all downhill for me now anyway.

Q : You saw your father commiting suicide when you were just 12 years old. Have you gotten over that?

Timo Tolkki : None of your business asshole. Why do you have to ask that? I will never get over that. When your own father cuts his wrists with razorblades and jumps down from the 4th floor in front of your eyes, don't you think it will have some influence to you?

Q : I am sorry I asked. Sorry Timo.

Timo Tolkki : Ok, no prob. You journalists just want to sell your fucking magazines! I know you! I know you!

Q: How are the new STRATOVARIUS songs?

Miss K: "We have been singing some old songs that Tolkki has selected carefully. I can sing all the songs though, with my range it is no problem for me to sing 'Father Time' and songs like that. The new songs I haven't tried so much, because Tolkki has this new psychological producing style where he doesn't really tell the band in advance how the songs are. We just get some guitar riffs and that's all. I guess they are doing some recordings already."

Jari K.: I never rehearse because I am so good. I have played in this band always. It is my band actually! You guys just don't know this. Besides I have more important things to do than to play. Like drinking and driving mountain bikes. My mountain bike costs 25 000 US Dollars by the way and it is a fucking nice piece of equipment!

Q: Miss K, your vocal performance in your previous band [AURORA K] has been criticized among the STRATOVARIUS community.

Miss K: "I can understand that. They were recorded years ago and I always told the guitar player of that band that the songs are written in the wrong fucking key for me!! Too fucking low! He never listened. It is an amateur band really, it's not even a band you know. Just one guy."

Timo Tolkki: "I never based my choice of Miss K to those soundclips. Frankly, they are quite horrible. What people think? I was convinced about Miss K when we met several times and talked about life and music and played together. She is truly an amazing performer, everybody will be surprised in the end when they will hear it! The songs in that old band of hers were quite poor, in my opinion, with horrible production and completely in a wrong key for Miss K. Her talent was wasted to death and now she has the chance to prove what she is really made of."

(at this point the interview had to be stopped because Tolkki was already so drunk that he could barely talk anymore. His assistant took him to rest and I continued with MissK for a while).

Q : So MissK, how do you see Timo Tolkki?

Miss K : He is such a gentleman with me. He listens to my feelings, fears (yeah, even I get scared sometimes!!) and what I want. I have never met anyone like him before. You know that he almost became a psychotherapist because of his fathers suicide. It hurt him so bad. He has over 600 books in his library and he is intelligent and well read and always been to me a really really nice and calm guy.
So he has an alcohol problem, that's too bad. He always says to me that he hasn't got an alcohol problem, the alcohol has a problem with him. He has such a great style of humour. Really black. Many people take everything what he says literally, but many times it's just his humour.

(at this point Tolkki returns and surprisingly looks completely sober!!!)

Timo Tolkki : I get these attacks sometimes, sorry. I am missing a gene and that results that I get drunk very easily and get also sober very quickly. Sometimes.

Q : I see. Last words for STRATOVARIUS fans?

Timo Tolkki : Remember that I am the guy who wrote all the fucking STRATOVARIUS classics! I wrote them all! I wrote Paradise, I wrote Hunting, I wrote Black Diamond!! I wrote Father Time, Kiss of Judas!! I wrote all those classics completely, also the vocal melodies. Kotipelto just wrote a few lyrics, but to me the music is what really counts. Lyrics are really not that important on a larger scale. He never wrote any of the music or melodies of any of my songs. Just a few lyrics. And even on those songs where he wrote some lyrics, the song titles were always mine. I compose like that you know. I always come up with the title first. So don't come to tell me to leave the band I created and in which I have been in 20 years!!!

If you don't understand my decisions, then you are always free not to listen to it or buy it. Don't buy fucking stuff you don't like!! So all I want to say is that although I do understand the disappointment of the fans in generally, I do not understand and accept the violence and prejudism concerning the lineup change. Through the tough times you see who your REAL friends are!!

And at the end of the day my Friends, it is just a FUCKING ROCK BAND!!!!
