내가 정말로 하고 싶은 것
그리고 할 수 있다는 느낌이 드는 것은
황야의 오솔길에 서 있는 아버지를 그리는 일이다
히이드로 뒤엎인 갈색의 황야를 좁고 하얀 모래길이 가로지르고
그 위에 엄격하게 보이는 개성있는 인물이 서 있는 모습으로
하늘은 조화롭고 열정이 담겨 있어야 한다
또, 아버지와 어머니가 가을 풍경 속에
서로 팔을 끼고 있는 그림도 그리고 싶다

내 그림을 본 사람들이, 이 화가는 깊이 고뇌하고 있다고
정말 격렬하게 고뇌하고 있다고 말할 정도의 경지에 이르고 싶다

늙고 가난한 사람들은 얼마나 아름다운지
그들을 묘사하기에 적합한 말을 찾을 수가 없다
인물화가들과 거리를 산책하다가
한 사람에게 시선을 주고 있는데
그들은 '아, 저 지저분한 사람들 좀 봐
저런 류의 인간들이란' 하고 말하더구나
그런 표현을 화가한테서 듣게되리라고는 상상도 못했지
