Regulation of digestive function

1. Four factors to regulate the function

1) Autonomous smooth muscle function

-	basic electrical rhythm (BER) or pacesetter potential : circular and longitudinal smooth muscle 사이에 존재하는 pacesetter cell (interstitial cells of Cajal)에서 self-induced, cyclic slow-wave potential을 만든다.
	⇒ GI smooth muscle contracts spontaneously.

이 potential이 action potential이 되기 위해서는 여러 가지 인자 (mechanical, nervous system activity, hormonal factor)들이 영향을 미친다. pacesetter cell에서 생성된 action potential은 gap junction으로 연결된 인접한 contractile smooth muscle cell로 전달된다. slow wave frequency는 각 장기마다 다르기 때문에 (stomach : 3 waves/min, duodenum : 12 waves/min) contractile activity도 다르게 나타난다. (따라서, 장기마다의 음식물 이동속도가 다르다.)

2) Intrinsic nerve plexus

-	myenteric plexus and submucous plexus (전체가 digestive tract wall 내부에 존재)가 enteric nervous system (or enteric brain)을 형성 : sensory, inter, output neuron등 3가지 유형의 neuron이 모두 digestive tract wall에 존재한다.
-	neurotransmitter : Ach (contraction), nitric oxide & vasoactive intestinal peptide (relaxation)

 3) Extrinsic nerve

-	sympathetic nerve : digestive tract contraction 과 secretion을 억제한다.
-	parasympathetic nerve : vagus nerve를 통해서 smooth muscle contraction을 촉진하고, enzyme이나 hormone의 secretion을 촉진한다.

 4) Gastrointestinal hormone

-	digestive tract (muscosa)에 있는 endocrine cell에서 혈액으로 분비 (secretin, gastrin 등)되어 혈액을 통해 다시 digestive tract의 smooth muscle이나 exocrine cell에 영향을 미친다.

2. Sensory receptors in GI tract

-	3가지 type의 receptor를 digestive tract wall이 함유하고 있다.

 (1) Chemoreceptor

 (2) Mechanoreceptor

 (3) Osmoreceptor
