l     start up: there is not much difference between simply saying ‘start’ and ‘start up’, however the word ‘up’ usually does carry that feeling of emphasis or excitement, so ‘start up’ business or a program the word up is carrying the feeling of emotion .è 본격적으로 시작하다

l     tune up: those who drive a car might recognize this expression‎ ‘tune up’, to ‘tune up’ is to bring back again into good condition, tune up your computer or life etc.

è (예전 상태로) 돌려놓다, 조율하다

l     perk up: ‘perk up’ is to give excitement or give some energy and some real life to something. è 기운을 차리다, 생기를 불어넣다

With the cold weather, very often car engines might have a little bit of problem.

The other morning I tried to start my car engine. It was so cold outside.

My engine did not want to start up at all.

And I thought to myself. What can I do to perk up my car?

Perhaps I should take my car in and get in new battery, maybe tune up the engine

and then my car will be feeling a little bit better.

So to my car, I’ll say, “Happy new year.”
