인자와 용납과 길이 참으심의 풍성함 (로마서 2 : 1~16) For the riches of His kindness.

인간 존재에 대한 분노

남을 판단하는 것은 그 자체로는 무해한 일입니다. 그러나 판단의 마음은 자신의 마음의 법정에 자신이 재판관이 되어 유죄판결을 내리는 경향이 있습니다. 그 순간 "그럴 수도 있지" 또는 "우리도 다 그런 비슷한 죄인이 아닌가"하는 생각은 그 목소리에 힘을 잃습니다. 오직 판단이 내린 결론앞에서 정죄를 즐겨하는 마음가짐이 형성됩니다. 하나님은 바로 이 '정죄하는 권한'에 이의를 제기하십니다.

우주의 심판자는 하나님이시며 형제를 정죄하는 순간 우리는 그 분의 자리에 올라앉는 어리석음을 범합니다. 그리고 그 보좌의 이름은 교만입니다. 이미 사단이 올라앉았던 자리이며 자신과 함께 멸망의 길을 갈 자들을 찾는 자리입니다. 그 자리에 올라 판단과 정죄를 외칠 때 이미 그 마음에 긍휼과 용서는 사라지고 없습니다. 교만의 수하는 미움과 질투와 분노와 적개심으로 가득한 번민하는 마음입니다.

이 올무에 빠진 자들은 성경에 많습니다. 가인이 첫번째 희생자입니다. 그는 살인자이며 동시에 이 정죄의 희생자입니다. 그리고 판단의 법정에 하나님을 세우고 자신이 재판장이 됩니다. 결론은 유죄. 그리고 형 집행자는 가인 자신이며 하나님을 대신해서 형벌을 받을 희생양으로 아벨을 지목합니다. 아벨의 피는 지금도 보좌앞에서 그 피를 신원하여 달라고 부르짖으며 땅은 그 피를 받아 저주의 가시와 엉겅퀴를 냅니다.

판단의 당사자는 자신을 합리화하는 경향이 있습니다. 사울은 다윗을 변호하는 요나단을 향해 저주를 퍼붓습니다. 다윗을 도와준 제사장의 마을을 초토화합니다. 아말렉의 우양은 아끼면서 제사장 마을엔 아이와 노인과 짐승들까지 쓸어버립니다. 판단은 정죄를, 정죄는 미움을, 미움은 살인을 낳으며 적개심을 강화해 갑니다. 결국 판단은 상대의 존재자체가 소멸되어야 만족하는 타는 불꽃과 같습니다. 그 불꽃은 결국 자기 자신에게 옮겨 붙어 인생의 수레바퀴를 불사릅니다.

또한 판단은 하나님의 인자하심과 용납하심과 길이 참으심을 멸시합니다. 판단과 정죄와 미움과 그 열매인 살인은 산불처럼 쉽사리 번지며 결국 자신도 그 불길을 제어하지 못하는 지경에 이를 때쯤 스스로 함정에 빠진 것을 알아차립니다. 그러므로 판단과 정죄는 하나님의 선하심과 반대되는 성품이며 믿는 자의 품에서 자라는 독초와 같습니다. 정결하고 순수한 심령도 판단의 독초가 자랄 때 곧 그 마음과 입술에서 쓴 물을 내기 시작합니다. 그리고 온 마음에 죽음의 그림자가 드리워져 갈 길을 잃고 방항하며 사망권세잡은 자의 효과적인 무기로 사용됩니다.

판단은 마치 지혜의 모습으로 가장합니다. 정확한 지적과 현란한 디테일과 일관된 논조와 합리적인 논리를 가지고 있지만 그 뿌리에는 분노와 미움이 엉겨붙어 있습니다. 사단도 광명의 천사로 가장하듯이 판단과 정죄의 말에는 단호함과 마음을 끄는 특징이 있습니다. 그러나 그 결말은 비참하며 어두운 증오의 감옥 속에 자신의 영혼을 가두는 어리석음으로 끝납니다.

정죄의 수표를 남발하는 사람은 하나님의 심판앞에 자유로울 수 없습니다. 그 정죄의 손가락질이 마지막 날에 나의 행위와 말을 달아보는 저울이 되어 어둔 곳에 주저앉아 슬피우는 자신을 발견하게 합니다. 악을 행하는 자의 영에 환난과 곤고가 있다고 합니다. 이는 하나님의 보응이며 선을 행하는 자에게 약속하신 영광과 존귀와 평강을 얻도록 힘써야 할 것입니다.

용서와 긍휼의 마음에 휩싸여 형제를 위한 기도의 골방으로 내려가는 자에게는 영광의 면류관이 예비되어 있을 것입니다. 반면 스스로 지혜롭게 여기며 상대를 판단하며 그 마음에 적개심을 품고 행하는 자는 마지막 날 자신의 행위의 열매를 먹게 될 것입니다. 형제 자매의 눈에 티를 제거하고자 힘쓰는 자는 자신의 눈안에 정죄의 뗏목이 떠다니는 것을 보게 될 것이고 자신의 연약과 어리석음을 한탄하고 울며 하나님의 옷자락을 잡는 자에게는 위로와 회복의 손길이 임할 것입니다.

The Wrath Against Human Existence

Judging others is harmless in itself. However, the judgmental heart tends to become its own judge in the court of its mind, issuing guilty verdicts. In that moment, thoughts like "It could just be that way" or "Aren't we all similar sinners?" lose their voice. Only a mindset that delights in condemnation is formed, based on the conclusion reached by judgment. God precisely challenges this "right to condemn."

God is the judge of the universe, and the moment we condemn our brethren, we commit the folly of sitting on His throne. And the name of that throne is Pride. It is the place Satan once occupied, a place from which he seeks those who will walk the path of destruction with him. When one ascends that seat and proclaims judgment and condemnation, compassion and forgiveness have already vanished from that heart. Pride's lieutenants are a tormented heart filled with hatred, jealousy, wrath, and enmity.

Many in the Bible fell into this snare. Cain is the first victim. He is a murderer and simultaneously a victim of this condemnation. And he places God in the court of judgment, making himself the judge. The verdict is guilty. The executioner is Cain himself, who designates Abel as the scapegoat to receive punishment on God's behalf. Abel's blood still cries out before the throne, pleading for vindication, and the earth, having received that blood, yields cursed thorns and thistles.

The party engaged in judgment tends to rationalize themselves. Saul pours curses on Jonathan, who defended David. He devastates the village of the priests who helped David. While he spares the livestock of the Amalekites, he wipes out even the children, the elderly, and the animals in the priestly village. Judgment leads to condemnation, condemnation to hatred, hatred to murder, and reinforces enmity. Ultimately, judgment is like a burning flame that is satisfied only when the very existence of the other is annihilated. That flame eventually catches fire on oneself, burning down the wheels of one's own life.

Furthermore, judgment despises God's kindness, tolerance, and long-suffering. Judgment, condemnation, hatred, and their fruit—murder—spread easily like a wildfire. Eventually, when one realizes they cannot control the flames, they discover they have fallen into their own trap. Therefore, judgment and condemnation are characteristics contrary to God's goodness and are like poisonous weeds growing in the heart of a believer. Even a pure and clean spirit, when the poisonous weed of judgment grows, soon begins to produce bitter water from its heart and lips. And the shadow of death looms over the entire heart, causing one to lose their way, wander, and be used as an effective weapon by the one who holds the power of death.

Judgment masquerades as wisdom. It has accurate observations, dazzling details, a consistent tone, and rational logic, but its roots are entangled with anger and hatred. Just as Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, the words of judgment and condemnation possess a decisive quality and an alluring charm. However, their end is miserable, culminating in the foolishness of trapping one's own soul in the prison of dark hatred.

One who indiscriminately issues checks of condemnation cannot be free before God's judgment. Those accusing fingers will become the scales that weigh one's deeds and words on the Last Day, leading to finding oneself sitting in darkness, weeping bitterly. It is said that trouble and distress will come upon the spirit of those who do evil. This is God's retribution, and one should strive to obtain the glory, honor, and peace promised to those who do good.

A crown of glory will be prepared for the one who, engulfed in a heart of forgiveness and compassion, descends into the prayer closet for their sibling. Conversely, those who consider themselves wise, judge others, and act with enmity in their hearts will eat the fruit of their deeds on the Last Day. Those who strive to remove the speck from their sibling's eye will see the log of condemnation floating in their own eye. And to those who lament their own weakness and foolishness, weeping and grasping God's garment, the hand of comfort and restoration will come.
