14.Hwa-Cheon-Dae-Yu (Hexagram 14 : Great Possession).
▣ [Six at Line 5 (六五,육오)] : Sincerity intersecting like a web; majestic and dignified.
Auspicious.
[Explanation]
[Six at Line 5 (六五,육오)] Associate with others based on sincerity,
but maintain dignity and majesty, so it is auspicious.
[Commentary]
First, Suhan(壽峴,수현) submitted a memorial using "O-wi-gwi-gam(五位歸鑑,오위귀감) :
"Your subject has reverently examined it.
In Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession), Line 6 [Note : refers to Line 5] is a single Yin(陰,음)
line becoming the master of five Yang(陽,양) lines,
forming the image of a yielding ruler subduing strong ministers.
If one leans solely toward trust/sincerity, negligence areses,
and if one is consistently unyielding with omly majesty, harm is formed ;
thus it says 'sincerity intersecting like a web
and furthermore says 'majestic and dignified, auspicious
because it seeks to complement each other through majesty and trust.
The same holds true today.
If your Majesty is strong and firm enough to subdue the strong, and first trusts and later acts
with majeaty so as to make the people's wills submit, it will be beautiful.
Ah! The 'Gyo(交,교)' in (厥孚交如,궐부교여) means that trust is very strong,
and the 'Yeo(如,여)' in (威如,위여) carries the meaning of temporarily displaying majeaty.
Although the two characters 'Yeo(如,여)' differ subtly in nuance and cannot be fully
expressed in words, they naturally reveal themselves implicitly."
"Prostrating ourselves in hope, we beseech Your Majesty to settle your mind and reflect upon this."
Seok Ji-hyung states : "The people and ministers should be associated with in sincerity,
but it is crucial that there is always majesty."
Line 5 is the position of the ruler and is the model of 'Checking evil and promoting good
Since Line 5, which ought to be strong and firm, is yielding,
it is easy to associate with others through trust,
but because those below might look down upon the ruler, majesty must also be maintained.
"Associate with the people with trust, yet there must be natural majesty.
Majesty that relies on force or brute physical power is problematic."
Xiang Zhuan sats:
Sincerity intersecting like a web means trust is emitted from the will ; majestic and dignified,
auspicious means it is easy yet without defense]."
Here, 'easy yet without defense(易而无備,이이무비)' is the highest praise for the capability of Line 5.
It is not a physical power that brandishes weapons and mobilizes military forces.
Wang Bi's argument is as follows : "If one is not self-serving toward the people,
but is fair and trustworthy, what further defense is needed?
Even without speaking, instruction is carried out―how could one's actions be perilous?
If one the master of Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession),
doing this much is what makes it auspicious."
Next is Dongpa's theory regarding "without defense (无備,무비) :
"Line 5 along employs yieldingness amidst many strong lines,
making it one who possesses nothing of its own.
Because it possesses nothing of its own, those on the outside support it.
Therefore, there also arise those who submit and seek communion with it.
Why is it that while being yielding, it still possesses majesty?
It Is because through having nothing of its own, one understands that there is spacious ease.
This means accurately knowing the emotional pulse of the people(민심의 포인트) through Line 2,
which appears yielding, and further, when moving with trust, the people do not become angry,
yet the people fear this more than battleaxes and hatchets(斧鉞,부월).
How could majesty ever arise merely by fabricating it ?
Meanwhile, Mukcheon(默泉,묵천) also interprets "easy yet without defense(易而无備이이무비)"
as "the mind becomes lax and complacent, so there is no defense or preparation
In the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, during the reign of King Gwanghaegun(광해군),
Jeong In--hong(정인홍) submitted a memorial stating "Strike down the traitors(역적을 치라)"
and advised the king to "display majesty(위엄을 보이라)," while the Account of King Sukjong's
Conduct(숙종 행장) discusses what displaying "majesty(威嚴,위엄)" means as follows :
"Only after strength and yielding acuieve the Middle Way(中道,중도) can one brightly illuminnate,
act strong and firm, and make resolute decisions.
If by any chance one is only yielding and never strict, or only strict and never yielding,
how could one ever properly preserve the mmasses and possessions under one's control?
If one is too yielding, the minds of the people(人心,인심)easily become slack and loose.
Therefore, mmajesty is definitely necessary.
As stated in the Doctrine of the Mean(中庸,중용), 'showing strength, standing firm,
and being sufficient to be obstinate/unyielding' refers to majesty."
In the Zuo Zhuan Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals(春秋左氏傳,춘추좌씨전),
there is a prophetic interpretation regarding Line 5:
"In the spring of the 2nd year od Duke Min of Lu, Huan-gong had Bok-chu's father act as
an oracle to inquire about the descendants of the soon-to-be-born Gye-son family.
He will return to his father's position.
Just like the position of a sovereign. he will be respected."
