The Deadly Self-reliance
“Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death.
But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.” 2 Corinthians 1:9 (NIV)
Relying on self has been humanly a good thing to do in the freeman's world,
where independent spirit is highly praised, desired and exhorted to go after it
for the sake of human excellency.
Who in the right mind can dare say evil things to this beautiful humanly goodness?
The apostle Paul did.
He considered self-reliance as deadly as a death sentence to his life.
All kinds of hardships came to keep him from NOT relying on self for his new life.
How deadly is this self-reliance to the new life?
It's as deadly as a piece of tiny leaven that leavens the whole lump of dough.
Relying on self is no less evil than picking the forbidden fruit for being like God.
That deadly.
Lord, help us not to rely on ourselves for the new life you gave.
