Many people leave their outdoor lights on at night to provide a sense of security. They believe that a well-lit property deters trespassers and criminals. Leaving a porch light on also makes it easier for you and your guests to find a way to the front door without tripping. But there are downsides to leaving exterior lights on overnight, from wasting energy to annoying the neighbors.
To determine whether you should leave your exterior lights on overnight, we consulted an expert. This is what Melissa Weaver, president of CPI Security, had to say about keeping your house safe and well-lit.

Should You Leave Outdoor Lights On All Night?
"Leaving lights on at night can definitely deter crime," says Melissa Weaver, president of CPI Security. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, CPI Security serves homeowners and businesses in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia. But lighting alone isn't enough to deter all criminals, and there are some disadvantages to leaving the lights blazing all night long. Here's what to consider and when motion-sensor lighting could be more effective.
Burglary And Other Crimes
If you're wondering if leaving the lights on all night deters burglars, the answer is it depends on the burglar.
"We find that burglars are looking for dark places to hide when they approach a home or business," Weaver explains. "However, in some cases, we have seen more brazen burglars skate past well-lit areas and continue to commit crimes. That’s why we recommend a home or business security system, so that we can take action and notify you immediately in the event of a break-in."
Research has found that some burglars like to strike in the afternoon when people are at work, while others will try to enter a home or rifle through cars at night. For many, it's a crime of opportunity, so the most important thing is to make your house look well-guarded and like someone is home.1
Annoying The Neighbors
While leaving outdoor lights on overnight might make your home less attractive to criminals, it can also irritate the neighbors. Not everyone wants security lights shining in their bedroom windows all night long. Some people have trouble sleeping at night if the light is too bright. Weaver suggests a compromise if the neighbors complain.
"If you are concerned about energy savings or annoying the neighbors, consider AI-powered and motion detection lighting, so the lights aren’t on the entire evening," she says. Shield lights or angle them away from the neighbors' windows.
Wasting Energy
Leaving one 60-watt porch light on all night adds about $20 a year to your utility bills, according to HVAC and electrical contractor Thermo Direct.2 That doesn't sound very expensive, but if you have several high-wattage security lights on your property, the energy usage starts to add up. Fortunately, switching to LED bulbs can save you a lot of money, as can using motion-detection lighting. Use a timer to shut off exterior lights and avoid wasting energy in the mornings. "When daylight breaks is a good time to switch the lights off," Weaver says.
Harm To Wildlife
Light pollution can harm nocturnal wildlife. According to DarkSky International, outdoor lights draw turtle hatchlings away from the ocean, confuse birds during migration, and result in the death of nighttime insects. To reduce the damage to animal populations, shield your lights so they project the light downward or use motion sensors so they don't stay on.3
When To Consider Adding A Security System
It can be tough to strike a balance between safety and keeping the neighbors happy. Weaver says that professional security companies can help address any concerns you have.
"While outdoor lighting is a great way to deter crime, it’s not foolproof. Sometimes burglars and thieves continue to commit crimes even in well-lit areas," Weaver concludes. "That’s why we recommend an entire home or business security system. If the burglars continue even after a spotlight is activated, your home or business security system will be there to take action."
And as far as the neighbors go, "We recommend professional installation vs. installing lights yourself," she says. "That way, they are placed in the most optimal location for deterring crime, while still being considerate to neighbors. This is where motion-activated lighting comes in handy, because you won’t have a light on 24/7."
