The Korean government expressed regret on Friday over a U.S. immigration raid that is believed to have resulted in the detention of about 300 Korean citizens at a Hyundai and LG Energy Solution construction site in Georgia.
한국 정부는 금요일 조지아의 현대 및 LG 에너지 솔루션 건설 현장에서 약 300명의 한국 시민을 구금한 것으로 추정되는 미국의 이민 습격에 대해 유감을 표명했다.
 
The detainees reportedly included a mix of Hyundai Motor Group affiliate employees and LG Energy Solution headquarters staff who were in the United States on business.
수감자들 중에는 사업차 미국에 있던 현대 자동차 그룹 계열사 직원과 LG 에너지 솔루션 본사 직원들이 포함된 것으로 알려졌다.
 
Seoul’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the business operations of Korean companies should not be disrupted by American law enforcement actions.
서울 외교부는 미국의 법 집행 조치로 인해 한국 기업의 사업 운영이 중단되어서는 안 된다고 강조했다.
 
"The economic activities of our investment firms and the rights of our citizens must not be unfairly infringed upon during U.S. law enforcement operations," ministry spokesperson Lee Jae-woong said during a briefing.
이재웅 국토교통부 대변인은 브리핑에서 "미국 법 집행 과정에서 투자 회사의 경제 활동과 국민의 권리가 부당하게 침해되어서는 안 된다"고 말했다.
 
Lee added that the ministry is taking active measures, including dispatching consuls from the Korean Embassy in Washington and the Consulate General in Atlanta to the site and setting up an on-site task force.
이 대변인은 외교부가 워싱턴 주재 한국 대사관과 애틀랜타 총영사관의 영사를 현장에 파견하고 현장 태스크포스를 구성하는 등 적극적인 조치를 취하고 있다고 덧붙였다.
 
"We have also conveyed our concerns and regret through the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, urging them to ensure that the legitimate rights and interests of our citizens are fully protected," the spokesperson said.
대변인은 "우리는 또한 주한 미국 대사관을 통해 우리 시민들의 정당한 권리와 이익이 완전히 보호될 수 있도록 우리의 우려와 유감을 전달했습니다,"라고 말했다.
 
President Lee Jae Myung has reportedly been briefed on the incident and instructed officials to closely monitor the situation.

The ministry's unusually strong response to the nation's key ally came hours after U.S. immigration authorities carried out a major law enforcement operation Thursday (local time) at a construction site where Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution are jointly building a new battery plant next to an existing electric vehicle manufacturing facility owned by the carmaker.
미국의 주요 동맹국에 대한 외교부의 이례적으로 강력한 대응은 목요일(현지 시간) 미국 이민 당국이 현대 자동차 그룹과 LG 에너지 솔루션이 공동으로 소유한 기존 전기 자동차 제조 시설 옆에 새로운 배터리 공장을 건설 중인 건설 현장에서 대규모 법 집행 작전을 수행한 지 몇 시간 만에 이루어졌다.
 
U.S. authorities said the raid was part of an investigation into "unlawful employment practices and other serious federal crimes." The operation involved agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations.
미국 당국은 이번 압수수색이 "불법 고용 관행 및 기타 심각한 연방 범죄"에 대한 조사의 일환이라고 밝혔다. 이번 작전에는 미국 이민세관단속국(ICE)과 국토안보수사국 요원들이 참여했다.
 
The agents reportedly held factory workers until their citizenship could be verified. Those whose status was unconfirmed were handcuffed with zip ties and transferred to an ICE detention facility.
요원들은 시민권이 확인될 때까지 공장 근로자들을 구금한 것으로 알려졌다. 신분이 확인되지 않은 사람들은 지퍼 타이로 수갑을 채우고 ICE 구금 시설로 이송되었다.
 
"We are confirm‎ing the exact number of detained individuals through cooperation with the companies," a foreign ministry official said on condition of anonymity.

"The consul general at the Korean Embassy in Washington is scheduled to be dispatched to the site with instructions to provide full support, including consular meetings and assistance," he added.

The official said U.S. authorities did not provide prior notice of the massive raid through diplomatic channels, while declining to comment on whether any communication occurred afterward.

Among the Koreans arrested were employees from partner firms who were in the U.S. on business trips.

Most are believed to have entered the U.S. on short-term business visas, or through the Visa Waiver Program or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. Immigration authorities appear to have initially determined that their presence at the site constituted "activities inconsistent with the purpose of their stay," prompting the arrests.

The facility, located in Ellabell, Georgia, employs roughly 1,200 people and is considered one of the state's largest manufacturing sites.

LG Energy Solution said it is "currently assessing the specific situation," while an official at Hyundai Motor Group's Seoul headquarters said so far there have been no confirmed detainees among its staff.
