14.Hwa-Cheon-Dae-Yu (Hexagram 14 : Great Possession).
▣ [Top Nine(上九,상구)] : Helped by Heaven; auspicious,
nothing that is not advantageous.
[Explanation]
[Top Nine(上九,상구)] Since it is helped by Heaven,
it is auspicious and there is nothing that is not advantageous.
[Commentary]
[Top Nine(上九,상구)] is the position where Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession)
reaches its ultimate peak(大壯,대장).
How should one practice Dae-yu(大有,대유) from above the ruler?
With the heaet of a father and grandfather, one must assist the sovereign at Line 5
and guide him to walk the Sagely Dao(聖道,성도).
This is compared to the regency of the Duke of Zhou, who assisted the wise king.
"Helped by Heaven(自天祐之,자천우지)" is achieved only when it is accomplished
without selfishness or personal desires.
The conduct of the Duck of Zhou is a representative example of Dae-yu(大有,대유),
and to this day, it is widely discussed in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian(史記,사기):
"In welcoming scholars, while eating a single meal he would spit out the food from his
mouth three times, and while washing his hair, he would grip and wring his hair three times
[to rush out and greet guests]."
Such an image of the Duke of Zhou, whose body is imbued with " checking evil and promoting
good(遏惡揚善,알악양선)," is seen by Confucius in the Xiang Zhuan : "[象曰 大有上吉 自天祐之 ,
상왈 대유상길 자천우지 - In Dae-yu(大有,대유), 'helped from neaven' brings auspiciousness―
this is because it assists the heavens]", and he adds a special explanation in Chapter 12 of the
Xici Zhuan (Commentary on the Appended phrases) :
"To be 'helped(祐,우) means to assist.
What Heaven helps is compliance(順,순), and what humans help is trustworthiness(信,신)."
Therefore, because [Top Nine(上九,상구)] puts trust into practice, thinks upon compliance,
and further esteems worthy and virtuous people, Heaven cannot help but assist it of its
own accord, bringing auspiciousness annd nothing that is not advantageous.
"[The I Ching says] " Helped by Heaven; auspicious, nothing that is not advantageous".
Confucius says : 'Helping(祐,우) is metaphysical(heavenly/spiritual), while assisting(助조) is
physical/earthly. 'Heaven(天,천)' means 'compliance(順,tns)', and 'human(人,인)' means
'trustworthiness(信,신)."
'Changes(易,역) explains the Principle of Retribution(報復之理,보복지리),
while rewards those who comply with heavenly principles, do not violate human ethics,
perform good deeds, and exert effort.
Dae-yu(大有,대유 - Great Possession) has only "supreme success(元亨,원형)
and no "perseverance and correct orientation(利貞,이정),
making it a hexagram without a fixed owner.
Therefore, anyone who "puts trust into practice and thinks upon compliance(履信思乎順,
이신사호순)" and 'further esteems the worthy and virtuous(又以尙賢,우이상현)"
can become the master of Dae-yu(大有,대유).
Wang Bi notes that while all other lines in Dae-yu(大有,대유) ride upon strong(剛,강) lines,
Top Nine along embraces the yielding(柔,유) nature of Line 5,
which is why it is gentle and compliant.
"Residing in the world of abundance and dwelling in Dae-yu(大有,대유),
its mind is not stolen by external material things,
and because its aspirations are lofty, it esteems the wise."
Dongpa clarifies the reasons why the three blessings of "helping, auspiciousness,
and nothing that is not advantageous" come to pass at the top line :
"Strong lines alone cannot utilize one another, nor can a solitary Yin(陰,음) lines utilize
Yang(陽,양) lines by itself.
Is it not that a yielding Yin line can only be accompanied by the masses after it attaches
itself to a strong Yang line?
That is the reason why Hexagram Cheon-Taek- Rui(天澤履卦,천택리괘) attaches 3 to 5,
and Hexagram Hwa-Cheou-Dae-yu(火天大有卦,화천대유괘) attaches 5 to [Top Nine].
Therefore, Hexagram Cheon-Taek- Rui(天澤履卦,천택리괘) had 'the loftiness of not being
bitten by a tiger,' and Dae-yu(大有,대유) had 'the help from heaven'.
This is all because the subtle working of sages reached the highest pinnacle.
Lacking physical force is due to the compliance of Line 5,
communication through trust is due to the trustworthiness of Line 5,
and all Yang lines taking refuge is because Line 5 esteems the wise.
[Top Nine] merely illuminates this."
If the one upon whom one treads complies, trusts, and further esteems the worthy
and virtuous, where else would the help of Heaven and humans eventually return?
Therefore, as it is said, "There is no merit before a sage [無功於聖,무공어성] and a spirit
has no name[無名於神,무명어신]", which explains why the reason for invoking blessings
is not explicitly stated in Top Nine of Dae-yu(大有,대유).
Lasyly, various commentaries(諸說,제설) on "complying with Heaven's auspicious mandate and checking evil and promoting good(順天休命 遏惡揚善,순천휴면 알악양선)" are appended.
First, Siksans(息山,식산) Yimanbu stated, "Distinguishing between the noble person(君子,군자)
and the petty person is no easy task";
Seongho(星湖,성호) stated, "Checking evil is like fire overcoming metal,
and revealing good is like fire emitting light";
and Seokjae(碩齋,석재) Yun Haeng-im warned, "If the thoughts of the sovereign diverge
from the voices of the people, the nation falls into peril".
Therefore, when diverse people raise numerous voices,
one must seek out and establish the original good.
Revealing good means returning to ritual(Li) to practice humaneness(Ren),
and checking evil while spreading good―are these not all the beautiful mandates
of Heaven bestowed upon us ?
