Three Flowers

I

Beyond the earthen wall of Ho-suk's house,

A morning glory

I've never seen it before

Pops its head out,

Smiling brightly.

The passing wind

Rides over the morning glory

Swaying its body

Laughing mischievously.

II

The school road crosses the stream and the mountain

At every bend

At every bend

The yellow-blooming mountain lilies

Welcome me

On the way to and from school

I stop walking and look at them for a moment

All my sorrows disappear

All my worries disappear

The mountain lilies

Bloomed just for me

III

The mother hen, who had just brought her chicks

Out into the yard

To teach them how to find food

For a moment, she raises her head, looks around the jangdokdae,

And then looks bewildered.

Around the kimchi storage jar, forsythia flowers are in full bloom.

All the chicks have gone to the jar,

And the mother hen is tilting her head,

Wondering if they've become forsythia flowers.

The chicks, learning to find food, are now

Looking for food for themselves.

호숙이네 집 흙담 너머

그동안 볼 수 없던 나팔꽃

고개를 쏘옥 내밀며

활짝 웃고 있다.

지나가던 바람이

나팔꽃 위에 올라가

몸을 까딱까딱 흔들며

짓궂게 웃고 있다.

내를 건너고

산을 넘는 학교 길

산굽이마다

산굽이마다

노오랗게 피어

날 반겨 주는

산나리꽃

학교 오며가며

걸음을 멈추고

이윽이 바라보면

모든 슬픔이 사라진다

모든 걱정이 사라진다

날 위해 피어난

산나리꽃

III

막 다리에 힘이 오른 병아리들을

마당으로 데리고 나와

모이 찾는 법을 가르쳐 주던 어미 닭

잠시, 고개 들어 장독대 둘레를 보다가

어리둥절해하고 있다.

장독대 둘레로는 한창

개나리꽃이 꽃망울을 터뜨리고 있는데

제 병아리들이 모두

장독대 둘레로 가서

개나리꽃이 되었나

어미 닭은 고개를 갸웃갸웃하고 있다.

모이 찾는 법을 배우던 병아리들은

저희들까지 모이를 찾아보고.
