JARS OF CLAY  질그릇

We have this treasure in earthen vessels,

that the excellence of the power may be of God

and not of us.                                —2 Corinthians 4:7

우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니

이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고

우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라                    -고린도후서 4:7

귀한 보석을 하나 사면,

그것은 대개 검정색이나 짙은 색의 부드러운 천으로 된 포장 속에 감싸여 있습니다.

When you buy a nice piece of jewelry,

it is often tucked

into a setting of black- or dark-colored velvet.

보석의 아름다움이 우리의 시선에 확 들어오도록

그렇게 디자인된 것이라고 생각됩니다.

I think it’s designed that way

so that your attention is immediately drawn

to the beauty of the jewelry.

만일 포장이 아주 화려하게 장식되어 있다면,

그 포장이 보석의 아름다움을 경쟁하게 될 것입니다.

If the packaging were highly decorated,
it would compete with the beauty of the treasure.

이것은 우리를 통해 행하시는 예수님의 사역에 대해 말하면서 바울이

 “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니”(고후 4:7)라고 말했던 것을 생각나게 해줍니다.

It reminds me of Paul’s comments

about the ministry of Jesus through us,

when he said,

“We have this treasure in jars of clay”.

우리는 우리가 포장이며 예수님의 사역이 보화인 것을 잊기 쉽습니다.

It’s easy to forget

that we are the packaging and His work is the treasure.

우리는 그리스도를 섬기는 일들로 스스로 인정받음으로써 우리의 질그릇을 장식합니다.

So we adorn our jars of clay,
taking credit for the things we do to serve Christ.

누군가를 용서했을 때,

또는 자비를 보이거나 넉넉히 베풀었을 때

우리는 스스로에게 영광을 돌리려 합니다.

We seek to bring glory to ourselves

when we’ve forgiven someone,
or shown mercy, or given generously.

문제는 우리의 선행에 대한 인정과 칭찬을 구하기 시작할 때,

우리는 우리를 통해 일하시는 하나님의 보배로운 광채와

경쟁하게 된다는 것입니다.

The problem is,
when we start seeking affirmation and praise for good deeds,

we compete with the brilliance

of the treasure of God working through us.

우리가 그리스도를 위해 일할 때,

그것은 우리가 아닌 그리스도의 영광을 위한 것입니다.

When we do things for Christ,

it’s not about us but about His glory.

우리가 덜 드러날수록 그리스도께서 더 빛이 나십니다.

The less obvious we are,

the more brilliant He becomes.

이것이 바로 하나님께서 영광을 받으시도록

보배가 질그릇에 담겨있다고 바울이 말한 이유입니다.

Which is why, Paul says,

the treasure has been put in jars of clay

so that God would be the one to be glorified.

질그릇이 소중했던 적이 있었습니까?

정말 가치가 있는 것은 그 안의 내용물입니다

Besides, since when are jars of clay significant?

우리가 하나님의 영광을 가리지 않도록 우리가 그분의 빛을 흐리지 않도록 도와주소서 우리의 생각들이 비워지고 그리스도께 사로잡혀 그리스도로 채워지게 하소서 그리스도를 위해 사는 삶을 통해 보배로운 그리스도의 광채가 빛나게 하라.
