하와이 이민선 겔릭호 보다 먼저 하와이에 들어온 한국인

   이 얇은 Summary가 우리가 이제까지 알고 있었던 하와이 이민역사의 일부를 고쳐 써야 할지도 모르겠다. 박기홍 목사는 하와이에서의 생활을 매일같이 일기로 기록을 해 왔었다. 1956년 세상을 떠날 때 입원했던 병원에까지 이 일기 책을 가지고 갔었다. 그런데 몇 십 년간을 기록해온 그 일기 책을 잃어버리게 된 것이 못내 아쉽기만 하다. 아마도 입원 중이던 호놀룰루의 Laehi Hospital에서의 사후 처리과정에서 분실된 것이 아니었나 한다.  

   한참 후에 큰 아들 원태(James Park-작고)가 병원을 찾아갔지만 찾을 수가 없었다. 기홍씨와 함께 생활을 했고 기홍씨를 알고 있으며 기억을 할만한 사람 모두가 지금 이 세상에 없으니 그들의 후세 중에서 현재의 생존해 있는 사람들로부터 전해들은 이야기와 그 전에 연락이 오가며 나누었던 소식들 중에서 기억이 나는 부분 정도를 정리해 보는 ‘수박 겉핥기’ 식의 이 글이지만 ‘그랬을 것이다’라는 식의 추측에 의한 한 두 곳을 제외하고는 모두가 사실에 입각한 내용들이다.

   미국 땅에 역사의 장을 써놓고 간 기홍, 기덕 두 할아버지의 발자취를 더듬어 본다. 박기홍(朴基鴻 1872~1956)과 박기덕(朴基悳 1879~1926) 형제가 하와이 행 화물선인지 어선인지에 몸을 싣게 된 것은 우리 나라 최초의 하와이 사탕수수 농업이민들을 태우고 제물포항을 떠났던「겔릭호」가 하와이에 도착한 1903년 1월 13일 보다 얼마나 앞섰는지 확실치 않지만「겔릭호」로 들어온 집단 이민 외에도 또 다른 절차와 경로 및 방법으로 하와이에 들어온 사람들도 있다는 사실을 손자의 위치에서 그 뿌리를 더듬어 본다.

   그들은 고종 31년 (1894), 전라도 고부에서 시작된 동학계 농민혁명 (갑오농민전쟁)에 가담했었다.  소량의 재래식 소총과 죽창으로만 무장된 동학군은 정부군과 일본의 막강한 근대식 무기와 화력 앞에는 속수무책이었다. 참패를 당하게 된 후 동학군들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져 피신을 해야만 했다. 물론 이들 형제도 숨어 다녀야 하는 처지에 놓이게 되었다. 그러다가 피신 중에 충청남도 예산에서 미국인 선교사 (이름과 종파 미상)를 만나게 되었다. 그 선교사의 집에서 숨어 지내다가 그의 알선으로 하와이행 배를 타게 되었다.  그런데 한가지 의문점은 동학운동은 체제우가 풍수사상과 유(儒), 불(佛), 선(禪)의 교리를 토대로 서학(西學: 기독교)에 대항한 인내천(人乃天): 천심즉인심 (天心則人心)을 내 걸기도 했었는데 선교사로서 동학에 가담한 우리 할아버지 형제를 도와준 이유에 대하여는 이해가 가지 않는 부분이기도 하다.  할아버지 형제가 골수 동학사상을 가지고 있었는지도 모르지만~.

   그 배가 어선이었는지 화물선이었는지에 대한 기록은 없으니 여객선은 아니었고 군산항에서 떠났다고만 전해지고 있다. 그 배의 이름도 정확하게 기억을 하지 못하고 있는데 두 아들이 그들의 아버지에게서 들은 기억에 남는 것은 단지 일본 국적의 배로 마지막 글자가 <XX 마루(丸)>로 끝나는 이름이었다는 기억일 뿐이라고 한다.

   사탕수수 이민의 경우는 양국간의 정식 절차나 협약에 의해 출항하게 되었겠지만 이 박씨 형제의 출입국은 어떤 절차나 방법으로 이루어졌는지에 대한 기록도 없다. 그 당시 한국과 미국간의 외교관계나 비자(Visa)에 관한 협정이 돼있었을 것 같지도 않은데 어쩌면 요샛말로 ‘밀항’의 성격이 아니었나 생각되기도 한다. 어쨌든 그들은 하와이에 도착했고 파할라(Pahala)에 정착을 하게 되었다. 사탕수수 농장이민과는 별도로, 그리고 다른 목적(도피)과 절차로 들어오긴 했지만 그들도 역시 우선 다른 사탕수수 이민자들이 농장에서 일을 했던 것처럼 그들의 생계를 위해 파할라에 있는 사탕제조공장에서 일을 시작했다. 아마 생산 직종이었을 것이다.

   기홍씨는 감리교회의 목사가 되어 그의 설교를 들으려고 초대해준 Kona에 있는 한국인들의 가정에서 머물기도 하면서 설교도 했었다. 지금은 신학교를 나오고 정식 안수를 받아야만 목사로서의 사역을 할 수 있는 것으로 이해되고 있는데 당시 어떤 절차와 경로를 거쳐 목사가 되었는지에 대하여는 그의 두 아들도 모른다고 했다.

   이 두 형제는 둘 다 30대 전후의 미혼인 채로 하와이에 오게 되었다. 형 기홍씨는 다른 한국이민자들이 그러했듯이 한국의 마산인지 밀양인지에 있던 여인과 사진을 통해 결혼을 했다. 1915년에는 아들 원태(James)가 태어났는데 열악한 환경 속에서 산후조리를 제대로 받지 못한 그 여인은 핏덩이인 원태를 남겨둔 채 사망하게 되었다. 파할라에 매장된 산소의 위치를 기억하기 위해 1940년대에는 묘지 주변이 철 파이프로 표시를 해 놨지만 오랜 세월이 지나고 세대가 바뀐 지금 그 자리는 주거지역으로 바뀌어졌고 산소는 찾을 길이 없어졌다.

   그 후 홀로된 기홍씨와 아기를 위해 그는 주위 사람들의 권유로 재혼을 하게  되었다. 두 번째로 맞은 아내는 하와이 원주민으로서 초혼은 아니었다. 역시 현지 한국인 남편을 여윈 후 홀로 지내고 있던 여인이었다. 기홍씨는 장기간 집을 비우게 될 때 그 동안 그녀를 친정에 가 있도록 했었다. 이때 어린 아들 원태도 함께 보냈었다. 그녀는  임신 7개월의 몸으로 아기 양육을 위한 한 푼의 돈이나 음식, 우유도 없이 친정에 들어가 친정부모의 눈치를 봐가며 지내야만 했다. 그  아이가 바로 둘째이며 James의 이복 동생인 Peter였다. 당시 기홍씨에게는 이들의 생활비를 뒷받침 해줄 능력이 없었기 때문이었다. 그녀는 이 아기에게 줄 우유와 음식을 마련하기 위해 하루에 50센트의 일당을 받고 세탁소에서 빨래와 다림질을 하는 일을 하게 되었다. 그녀의 친정 아버지는 자기의 딸이 이렇게 고생하고 있는 꼴을 보다 못해 이렇게 능력도 없고 책임감도 없는 기홍씨에게 다시는 보내지 않겠다며 이혼을 시켰다.

   James의 동생 Peter(2008년 작고)가 태어난 이후 피터는 나이 16세가 될 때까지 아버지인 기홍씨를 단 한번도 만나본 적이 없었다. 이때 기홍씨는 Maui에 살고 있었다. Peter의 어머니는 교역자 모임이 있는 마우이에 가서 기홍씨를 만나 Peter에 대한 이야기를 들려줬고 부자간에 한번 만나 볼 것을 상의 했다.  Peter에게도 “네가 원한다면 너의 아버지를 만나보라”고 했다. 기홍씨는 그 때 Peter에게 여비조로 5 달러를 보냈다고 한다.

   Peter는 Kona에서배편으로 Maui로 가서 아버지를 만났는데 이것이 출생 후 16년만의 첫 만남이었다. Peter의 말에 의하면 “이 만남에서 어떤 혈육간의 정이나 아무런 친밀감 같은 것을 느낄 수 없었고 평소에 안면정도나 있는 사람을 만나는 것처럼 무덤덤 했었다고 한다. Peter는 이런 식으로 두어 차례 자기 아버지 집을 방문했었는데 그때마다 혼자서만 집에 머물다가 돌아오곤 했다고 한다. 기홍씨는 항상 생계를 위해 일을 해야 했고 목회활동도 함께 해야 했기 때문에 집에서 Peter와 함께  보낼 수 있는 시간도 없었다.

   기홍씨가 Pahala에서 목회활동을 하면서 설교를 하기 위해서는 Kona까지 걸어서 다녀야 했다고 한다. 가는데 일주일, Pahala로 돌아오는데 또 일주일이 걸렸다고 한다. 가끔은 오가는 다른 사람들(미국인)의 차편을 이용할 수도 있었다고 하는데 움직이는 자동차를 타는 것을 무서워하기도 했다고 한다. 한국에서는 그때까지 자동차라는 것을 알지도, 보지도 못했던 때였기 때문이었으리라.

   나의 친 할아버지이며 기홍씨의 동생인 기덕씨는 선교사로서의 사역을 맡게 되었다. 기덕씨는 선교차 한국에도 다녀갔었다. 하와이에서 각종 구호물품을 수집하여 배에 싣고 가서 가난한 이웃들에게 나누어 주기도 하고 야산을 개간하여 현지 주민들이 농사를 지을 수 있도록 돕기도 했다고 한다. 당시 우리가 살고 있던 충청남도에 초등학교를 세우는 일에도 많은 역할을 담당했다고 한다.  지금도 있는 충남 보령시 남포 면에 있는 ‘남포초등학교’가 바로 그 학교다.

   기덕씨가 한국에 가게 될 때, 그 당시에는 항공이나 해상 교통이 지금처럼 발달돼있지도 않아 자주 오갈 수는 없었다. 배편도 여객 전용선이 아니고 부정기적으로 오가는 일본 화물선이나 어선이었고 한번 다녀오는데도 여러 달의 일정을 잡아야만 했다고 한다. 한번 한국에 나가게 되면 여러 지방을 다니며 선교활동을 해야 했다. 야산 개간이라든지 현지 주민들 중에 뜻을 같이하는 사람들을 모아 주민봉사 등의 일도 하게 되었다. 그는 그 동안에 한국에서 결혼을 하게 되었다. 아들 형제와 딸을 하나 두었다. 기덕씨가 한국에 나올 때의 차림은 서양식의 짧은 머리 스타일에 양복을 입고 있었으며 동네 사람들이 마련해 준 말을 타고 집안에 들어왔다고 한다. 할머니는 이런 모습의 할아버지 모습을 대할 때 마치 도깨비를 만난 것처럼 무서워하고 창피하기도 하여 골방에 숨어서 나오지도 않았다고 한다.

   기홍씨는 설탕제조회사에서 풀 타임으로 일을 하면서도 목회활동은 계속했고 한 때 한국의 초대대통령 이승만 박사와도 동숙을 했다고 한다. Peter씨의 말에 의하면 기홍씨는 산에서 통나무를 잘라다가 숯을 구워 한국 이민자들에게 팔기도 했고 여기서 모아진 돈을 독립운동 자금에 보태기도 했다고 한다.

   기홍씨는 1900년대 초 한국을 떠난 이래 1956년 타계할 때까지 단 한번도 한국을 방문하거나 가족 친척을 만난 적이 없다. 그는1915년애소 1917년까지 Hakalau 교회에서, 1918년에는 Honokaa 교회, 1919~1920, 1921~1926년에는 마우이 섬의 Spreckelsvill-Paia 교회에서 목회 활동을 하다가 1926년에는 건강 악화로 교회를 떠나게 되었다. 그는 세상을 떠나기 전에 한국에 돌아가고 싶어했다고 한다. 그러나 그 뜻은 이루어지지 않았다. 경제적인 어려움 때문이었다. 그는 사전에 자기가 세상을 떠난 후 자기의 무덤까지 미리 준비를 해 두었다. 그는 호놀룰루의 나우안 묘지(Nnauann Memorial Park)에 안장돼 있다.

   한국과 하와이의 박기홍씨 가족과 연락이 오고간 것은 1950년 6.25 한국전쟁이 일어나기 전까지였다. 그 당시 부친은 혼자서 피난길에 나서야만 했고 가족과 헤어지게 되었다. 법원의 판사였던 부친이 인민군들에게 발견되면 그 결과는 뻔한 일이었다. 수복과 휴전협정이 있던 그 이후에도 부친은 복직과 함께 전근하게 되어 다른 지방으로 이사를 가야 했는데 이러한 와중에서 연락을 취할 수도 없었다. 이런 상태에서 여러 해가 지났고 그러는 동안 기홍씨도 Phala에서 Maui로 이사를 가게 되어 완전히 연락이 두절되었다.

   1961년 내가 대학교 1학년 때의 일이다. 초등학교 5학년 때 떠난 고향을 찾아가게 되었다. 충남 보령에 있는 남포초등학교 앞을 지날 때 어머님께서 “이 학교를 설립할 때 할아버지가 상당한 역할을 했다”는 말씀을 하셨다. 나는 어린 시절 할아버지 형제가 하와이에 가셨고 큰 할아버지(기홍씨)는 아직까지도 그곳에 계실 텐데 서로가 연락이 끊겨 생존하고 계신지도 모르겠다는 말을 듣게 되었다. 나는 나 자신이 이분들을 찾아야겠다는 생각을 했었다.

   서울에 오자마자 외무부에 가서 호놀룰루 주재 한국 총영사관의 주소를 적어와서 즉시 편지를 보냈다. 그리고 기홍씨가 감리교회 목사였던 점을 감안하여 서울 국제극장 옆에 있던 감리교 총리원을 찾아가 호놀룰루의 한인 감리교회(당시 박대희 목사: 아마 현재도 생존)의 주소를 받아왔다.  당시 그 교회의 담임목사인 박대희 목사님께 편지를 보냈다. 이 때 큰집에서 보관하고 있던 딱 2장의 사진 (박기홍 할아버지와 큰아들 제임스가 나와있는)을 가지고 와 한 장은 총영사관에, 한 장은 박대희 목사님께 보냈었다.

   그러나 한 달이 가고 두 달이 가도 아무런 연락이 없었다. 그 후 약 서너 차례, 한 달에 한번 꼴로 편지를 보냈지만 역시 아무런 응답이 없었다. 마지막 편지를 보낼 때는 “만일 이분들을 찾을 수 없으면 사진이라도 돌려달라”고 당부를 했지만 역시 무소식이었다.  가문 전체에 2장밖에 없었던 사진만 없애게 되었고 이로 인해 큰아버님으로부터 원망만 듣게 되었다. 지금 같았으면 그 사진들을 복사를 해 둘 수도 있었을 텐데~.

   나는 1975년 이민 길에 올랐다. 테네시주의 컬럼비아에 도착하여 거처와 직장을 정하자마자 할아버지를 찾는 일에 많은 시간을 보냈다. 할아버지(박기홍), 큰아들의 한국이름 박원태. 이 두 분의 이름이 가지고 있는 자료의 전부였다. 일에서 돌아오면 우선 하와이 주와 로스앤젤레스 주변 도시의 전화국에 연락하여 이 두 분의 이름을 찾아봤지만 그런 이름이 나와있지 않다는 것이었다. 이제는 체념을 하는 수밖에 없었다.

   이렇게 연락이 두절된 채 여러 해가 지났고 더구나 기홍씨는 1956년에 호놀룰루에서 타계하셨으니 전화번호에도 나올 리가 만무했다. 큰아들 원태라는 이름은 친척끼리나 부르는 이름이었을 뿐이었고 정식 영어이름이 James라는 것도 나중에 만난 다음에야 알게 되었으니 찾을래야 찾을 길이 없었다.

   할아버지가 돌아가신 후에도 원태씨는 원태씨대로 우리를 찾기 위해 두어 차례 한국을 방문했었다고 한다. 우선 사진결혼으로 하와이에 온 어머니의 출생지로 여겨지는 마산, 밀양 등을 방문하여 시청, 구청, 동사무소를 찾았으나 아무런 자료를 찾을 수가 없었다고 한다.

   마지막으로 우리 아버님이 충남 공주에서 판사로 근무했다는 희미한 기억만으로 공주를 찾아가는 길에 택시운전 기사에게 큰 기대도 없이 지나치듯 나의 아버지인 박학진(朴鶴鎭)씨 이름을 대며 찾는다고 했더니 뜻밖에도 그 운전기사가 알고 있다는 것이었다고 했다. “그분 지금 서울 신문로에서 변호사 사무실을 가지고 있다”고 하여 가던 길을 즉시 되돌아 서울로 갔다는 것이다. 택시기사에게는 택시 대절료와 사례금도 주었다고 한다. 택시기사는 이를 빌미로 수시 국제전화도 하고 편지도 해가며 원태씨를 ‘아버님’이라 부르며 이것저것 도움을 청하기도 하고 심적인 부담도 주었다고 한다. 처음 몇 차례는 작으나마 약간씩의 도움도 주었지만 자꾸 반복하고 습관화 되는 것 같아 그 다음부터는 연락도 하지 않았다고 한다.

   그때 나는 이미 미국에 와 있었는데 우리 부모님과 형제자매 모두가 함께 서울 세종호텔에서 만났을 때의 극적인 장면은 아산가족이 상봉하는 모습 그 자체였다고 한다. 나는 서울의 형님이 전해준 이 소식과 연락처를 받자마자 하와이 시간으로 새벽 2시 정도에 전화를 하게 되었다. 도저히 아침시간까지 기다릴 수가 없었다. 원태씨는 잠에서 깨어난 목소리였지만 너무나 반가워 해주었다.

   그 당시 오랜지 카운티의 플라센티아에 살고 있던 원태씨를 만나기 위해 직장에서 며칠간의 휴가를 얻었다. 컬럼비아는 조그만 타운이어서 비행기를 타려면 내쉬빌까지 가야만 했다. 그레이 하운드 버스를 타고 내쉬빌에 가서 밤 비행기를 탔다. 밤비행기의 반정도 밖에 채워지지 않은 자리에 앉아있는 승객은 모두가 외국인 뿐이었고 동양인이라고는 나 하나 뿐이었다. 나이 70이 넘어있을 제임스 아지씨의 생김새가 어쩐지에 대한 생각을 해 보며 출구로 나왔다. 사진으로 본 박기홍 할아버지의 모습이 우리 아버지의 모습과 거의 똑같이 닮은 점을 볼 때 제임스 아저씨도 비슷하게 닮았을 것이라는 상상을 하면서~.

   그러나 아버지나 기홍 할아버지를 닮은 모습의 동양인은 눈에 뜨이지 않았다. 잠시 앞뒤를 번갈아 가며 두리번 거리고 있을 때 등 뒤쪽에서 “영보?”라며 팔을 잡았다. 작달막한 키에 다부진 체격의 제임스 박이었다. 나는 이분이 제임스 인가를 확인해 볼 필요도 없이 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 “아저씨-“하고 불렀다. 나는 이 말 밖에는 다른 아무 말이 떠오르지 않았다. 그는 나를 힘껏 끌어 안았다. 그도 아무 말 없이 한참 동안을 포옹한 채 오른 손으로 나의 등을 톡톡 두드리기만을 계속했다. ‘피는 물보다 진하다’라는 말만으로는 이 ‘절실했던 간구’를 설명하는 데는 너무나 미약한 것 같았다. 나는 공항 바닥에 엎드려 한국식의 큰절이라도 올리고 싶었으나 그럴 수도 없는 노릇이었다. 요즈음 가끔 보게 되는 ‘TV는 사랑을 싣고’ 같은 프로에서나 볼 수 있는 장면을 숱한 사람들이 오가는 공항바닥에서 연출할 수는 없는 노릇이었다.

   “우선 나가자”며 주차장으로 갔다. 그는 초록색 2인승 포쉐 스포츠카의 문을 열어주었다.  나이 70이 훨씬 넘은 노인네가 이런 차를 타고 다니고 있다니~. 그분에 대하여 이런 생각을 하며, 이분과 나와는 전혀 다른 문화적, 정신적 또는 사고의 많은 차이가 있을 것이라는 생각을 해보기도 했었다. 집으로 가는 도중에도 한국말은 쓸 줄도 읽을 줄도 모르고 아주 간단한 말만을 해야 하므로 영어와 한국어를 섞어가며 대화를 하면서도 이분과의 만남에서도 한국적인 정서가 깔린 마음의 오고 감에는 많은 벽이 있을 것이라는 생각이 들기도 했었다. 그러나 이것은 나의, 그야말로 한국적인 발상에서 나오는 기우에 불과했었다. 자동차가 오래되어 새 차로 바꿀 때도 스포츠 카인 새빨간 쉐비 코벳을 사서 세상을 떠날 때까지 이 차를 애용해 오던 그였었다. 대화에 있어서도 우리가 생각하고 있는 나이에 대한 개념을 완전히 바꾸게 되었다. 그래서인지 그의 주변에는 20대에서 8-90대까지 다양한 친구들을 가지고 있었다. 그야말로 남녀노소의 구분이 없었다. 그는 그들을 항상 ‘친구’라는 호칭으로 부르고 있었다.

   오랜지 카운티의 플라센티아(Placentia)에 있는 집에 도착한 시간이 새벽 두세 시가 넘은 시각에도 루시 아줌마는 그때까지 잠을 자지 않고 기다리고 있었다. 공항에서 드리지 못한 큰절을 올렸다. 루시 아줌마는 이태리 계의 백인으로서 아주 재미있고 쾌활한 성격의 소유자였다. “제임스는 영보가 이곳에 오면 우리에게 한국식의 큰절을 할 것이라”고 말을 했다며 “나는 네가 만일 우리에게 큰절을 하지 않으면 너를 쫓아낼 (Kick you out) 생각이었다”며 첫 번째의 만남을 폭소로 시작될 수 있는 분위기를 만들어 주었다. 그것도 세시가 넘은 새벽시간에~. 최근에 남북 이산가족들간에 통곡으로 시작되어 통곡으로 끝나고 마는 재회의 장면과는 전혀 다른 분위기 속에서의 만남이었다.

   늦은 새벽시간까지 잠이 오지 않았다. 원태씨는 원래 한국여인과 결혼을 했는데 사진을 보니 배우처럼 아름다운 얼굴이었다. 두 아들 제임스 주니어와 리(Lee)를 두었지만 그녀가 삼십 대 초에 지병으로 타계했고 여러 해 후에 루시와 재혼을 했다.

   뜬 눈으로 새우다시피 하다가 가까스로 잠이 들었다.  웅성거리는 말소리와 딸가닥거리는 소리에 깨어보니 벌써 아침 여덟 시가 넘었다. 원태씨가 나를 위해 미리 사다 놓은 김치와 쌀로 지은 밥 그리고 계란 프라이가 담긴 접시가 놓은 식탁에 앉게 되니 비로서 나누어진 피의 끈끈함을 느낄 수가 있었다.

   1876년 개항 이후 일본의 조선에 대한 경제적 침투, 일본인 어부들의 횡포, 국내 탐관오리들의 횡포와 학정 등에 대한 폐정 개혁을 내 걸고 일어선 동학운동에 간여했던 두 할아버지 모습이 떠오른다. 뜻을 이루지 못한 채 날개를 접고 찾아 든 하와이 섬. 그는 지금 땀으로 범벅 된 이역에서의 삶을 살아오다가 우리의 얼을 이어나갈 핏줄을 남겨둔 채 이역의 하늘 아래에 누워 있다. 기홍씨의 첫째 아들 James Park은 1984년에는초 Orange County의 Placentia에서 시의원에 입후보 했다가 낙선 했으며 (한국일보 보도) 1987년에는 오랜지 카운티 법원의 판사들에 의해「올해의 배심원」으로 선정되기도 했다. 약 5년 전 82세의 일기로 작고했다. 둘째 아들 Peter Park은 85세로 하와이의 Kona에 살고 있었는데 2008 여름에 세상을 떠났다. 그들에 이어 제 삼 세대(Third Generation)인 우리가 지금 미 대륙을 달리고 있는 것이다.
