(What is Maintenance?)
Maintenance means that a person keeps engaging in a behavior after the intervention
has stopped.
Maintenance happens when someone still uses a skill they learned, even when no one
is directly reinforcing them for it.
The more skills a learner maintains, the more they can do for themselves.
If a skill is not maintained, RBTs may need to reteach it again and again.
If a skill is not maintained, it’s unlikely the learner will use it in new settings.
Supporting maintenance shows that you care about doing what’s best for the client not
just during sessions, but in their daily lives.
Acquisition is the process of learning new behaviors that are not yet part of the learner’s
skill set.
Maintenance means that the learner continues to use a skill after formal teaching has
stopped.
Understanding the difference between acquisition and maintenance helps you avoid
using too much prompting for mastered skills or too little reinforcement for new ones
Lesson 2:
Strategies to support maintenance include reinforcement-based methods, teaching
techniques, fading supports, monitoring progress, and troubleshooting common
challenges.
Intermittent reinforcement means that the learner no longer receives reinforcement
every time they perform the behavior.
Variable schedules of reinforcement are a type of intermittent reinforcement that can be
used to maintain a skill or behavior.
Not all differential reinforcement types can be used to maintain behavior. DRO focuses
on the absence of a problem behavior, so it would not be used to maintain a behavior
targeted for maintenance.
Natural reinforcement happens when a behavior produces a meaningful or rewarding
outcome in the learner’s everyday environment.
Embedding reinforcement into the natural environment helps learners see the value in
the behavior itself.
Overlearning is especially important for safety and life skills, such as crossing the street,
brushing teeth, or responding to emergency instructions.
Maintenance is stronger when the learner can perform the skill in different situations.
This is called generalization, and it directly supports maintenance.
Teaching a skill during real-life activities, such as prompting a child to greet a peer
during recess rather than just during a role-play, makes the skill more relevant and more
likely to stick.
A maintenance probe is a brief, planned check to see whether a previously learned skill
is still being performed correctly by the learner without any prompts or reinforcement.
BST is used to train caregivers, teachers, or other staff to continue supporting the
learner’s skills outside of sessions.
Fading is essential because it promotes long-term success, supports maintenance, and
prevents prompt dependency, which happens when a client only performs a skill when
prompted.
Prompt fading involves reducing the level of help given during instruction.
Reinforcement fading means moving from a dense reinforcement schedule, like after
every correct response, to a lean or more natural schedule, like after every few
responses.
Instructional fading involves gradually moving from structured or contrived teaching
settings, like one-on-one table work, to natural environments, like the playground or
home.
One common method for monitoring maintenance is the use of maintenance probes.
These are brief checks where the RBT observes whether the learner performs a
previously mastered skill without prompts or reinforcement.
If a skill is not reinforced over time, especially when natural reinforcement doesn’t occur,
the learner may stop using it.
If prompts are not faded properly during teaching, the learner may wait for a prompt
instead of performing the skill on their own.
A skill taught in one setting or with one person may not carry over to other environments
or people.
If a skill begins to fade, it may be necessary to briefly return to acquisition-level
interventions.
