The Seventh Day

일곱째 날 / 비드야다라신과 축생세계

On the Seventh Day, the Knowledge-Holding Deities,

 from the holy paradise realms, come to receive on. Simultaneously,

 the pathway to the brute world, produced by the obscuring passion,

 stupidity, also cometh to receive one.

The setting-face-to-face at that time is, calling the deceased by name, thus:

그러나 교화되지 않은 곳에 사는 낮은 근기의 사람들이나

진리의 체험이 전혀 없는 악한 사람들,

그리고 삼마야 수행을 퇴보하도 사람들은

록 내버려둔그들의 업 때문에 혼란을 겪게 되어

 인도 받을 때조차 알아차리지 못하고

아래를 향하여 방황한다.

그래서 일곱째 날에 지식을 가진 신인 비드야다라

*들이 공간의 순수한 세계로부터 그들을 이끌어

 주기 위하여 나타날 것이다.

그리고 동시에 무지의 감정으로 생긴

축생 세계의 빛의 길 또한 그들과 만날 것이다.

그때 그를 다시 인도하기 위하여 죽은

 사람의 이름을 부르고 다음의 말을 해 주어야 한다.

O nobly-born, listen undistractedly.

 On the Seventh Day the vari-coloured radiance

 of the purified propensities will come to shine. Simultaneously,

the Knowledge-Holding Deities, from the holy paradise realms,

 will come to receive one.

오 고귀한 집안의 사람이여,

정신을 흩뜨리지 말고 잘 들으십시오.

일곱째 날에는 여러 색깔을 가진 순수한

 빛 하나가 당신의 무의식적인 마음에 비칠 것입니다.

그리고 지식을 가진 신인 비드야다라들이

공간의 순수한 세계로부터 당신을

 이끌어 주기 위하여 나타날 것입니다.

From the centre of the Circle [or Mandala],

 enhaloed in radiance of rainbow light, the supreme Knowledge-Holding [Deity],

 the Lotus Lord of Dance, the Supreme Knowledge-Holder Who Ripens Karmic Fruits,

radiant with all the five colours, embraced by the [Divine] Mother, the Red Dākinī,

[he] holding a crescent knife and a skull [filled] with blood,

 dancing and making the mudrā of fascination,

 [with his right hand held] aloft, will come to shine.

무지개 빛으로 채워진 만달라의 중앙에서는,

능가할 자 없는 완전히 발달된

비드야다라인 춤추는 연꽃 신이 나타날 것입니다.

그의 몸은 오색으로 빛나며,

그의 배우자인 붉은 다키니*를 포옹한 채 초승달

모양의 칼과 피가 가득 찬 해골을 들고

결인(結印)을 하고 하늘을 응시하고 있습니다.

To the east of that Circle,

 the deity called the Earth-Abiding Knowledge-Holder,

white of colour, with radiant smiling countenance, embraced by the White Dākinī,

the [Divine] Mother, [he] holding a crescent knife and a skull [filled] with blood,

dancing and making the mudrā of fascination,

[with his right hand held] aloft, will come to shine.

만달라의 동쪽에서는 보살의 수행 단계를 완성한 자라고

 불리는 비드야다라가 나타날 것입니다.

그의 몸은 미소짓는 빛나는 얼굴을 한 하얀색입니다.

그는 그의 배우자인 하얀 다키니를 포옹한 채

 초승달 모양의 칼과 피가 가득 찬

해골을 들고 춤을 추며,

 결인을 하고 하늘을 응시하고 있습니다.

To the south of that Circle,

 the Knowledge-Holding Deity called [He] Having Power Over Duration of Life,

 yellow in colour, smiling and radiant, embraced by the Yellow Dākinī, the [Divine] Mother,

 [he] holding a crescent knife and a skull [filled] with blood,

 dancing and making the mudrā of fascination, [with his right hand held] aloft, will come to shine.

만달라의 남쪽에서는 생명의 지배자라고

불리는 비드야다라가 나타날 것입니다.

그의 몸은 아름다운 모습을 한 노란색입니다.

그는 그의 배우자인 노란 다키니를 포옹한

채 초승달 모양의 칼과 피가 가득 찬

해골을 들고 춤을 추며,

 결인을 하고 하늘을 응시하고 있습니다.

To the west of that Circle,

 the Knowledge-Holding Deity of the Great Symbol, red of colour,

 smiling and radiant, embraced by the Red Dākinī, the [Divine] Mother,

 [he] holding a crescent knife and a skull [filled] with blood,

 dancing and making the mudrā of fascination, [with his right hand held] aloft, will come to shine.

만달라의 서쪽에서는 위대한 상징이라고

 불리는 비드야다라가 나타날 것입니다.

그의 몸은 미소짓는 빛나는 얼굴을 한 붉은색입니다.

그는 그의 배우자인 붉은 다키니를 포옹한 채

초승달 모양의 칼과 피가 가득 찬

해골을 들고 춤을 추며,

 결인을 하고 하늘을 응시하고 있습니다.

To the north of that Circle,

 the deity called Self-Evolved Knowledge-Holder,

 green of colour, with a half-angry, half-smiling countenance,

 embraced by the Green Dākinī, the [Divine] Mother,

 [he] holding a crescent knife and a skull [filled] with blood

, dancing and making the mudrā of fascination,

 [with his right hand held] aloft, will come to shine.

In the Outer Circle,

 round about these Knowledge-Holders,

 innumerable bands of dākinīs -- dākinīs of the eight places of cremation,

 dākinīs of the four classes, dākinīs of the three abodes,

dākinīs of the thirty holy-places and of the twenty-four places of pilgrimage

 -- heroes, heroines, celestial warriors, and faith-protecting deities,

 male and female, each bedecked with the six bone-ornaments, having drums and thigh-bone trumpets, skull-timbrels, banners of gigantic human[-like] hides,

 human-hide canopies, human-hide bannerettes, fumes of human-fat incense,

and innumerable [other] kinds of musical instruments,

filling [with music] the whole world-systems and causing them to vibrate,

 to quake and tremble with sounds so mighty as to daze one's brain, and dancing various measures

, will come to receive the faithful and punish the unfaithful.

만달라의 북쪽에서는 자발적으로 일어난 자라고

불리는 비드야다라가 나타날 것입니다.

그의 몸은 반은 화가 나 있고 반은

 미소짓는 얼굴을 한 초록색입니다.

그는 그의 배우자인 초록 다키니를 포옹한 채

초승달 모양의 칼과 피가 가득 찬

해골을 들고 춤을 추며, 결인을 하고 하늘을 응시하고 있습니다.

이들 비드야다라들 너머에서는 헤아릴

수 없는 다키니 무리가 나타날 것입니다.

여덟 군데 화장터의 다키니들, 네 가지 부류의 다키니들,

세 군데 세계의 다키니들,

열 군데 방향의 다키니들, 스물 네 군데 순례지의 다키니들,

 남녀 전사들과 하인들,

그리고 모든 남녀 진리의 수호자들이 그들입니다.

그들은 여섯 개의 뼈로 된 장신구를 걸치고 있으며,

북, 넓적다리뼈로 만든 나팔, 해골로 만든 북,

 젊은 사람의 가죽으로 만든 깃발,

사람 가죽으로 만든 파라솔과 리본,

사람 살로 만든 향을 지니고 있습니다.

그들은 또 셀 수 없이 많은 여러 가지 악기를 가지고 있으며

그들이 흔들고 진동하기만 하면

우주의 모든 곳이 가득 찹니다.

그들은 여러 가지 춤을 추며

 모든 악기*를 진동시켜 사람의 정신을 내동댕이칩니다. 

O nobly-born, five-coloured radiances,

 of the Wisdom of the Simultaneously-Born,

 which are the purified propensities,

 vibrating and dazzling like coloured threads, flashing,

 radiant, and transparent, glorious and awe-inspiring,

 will issue from the hearts of the five chief Knowledge-Holding Deities and strike against thy heart,

so bright that thy eye cannot bear to look upon them.

오 고귀한 집안의 사람이여,

무의식의 세계에서 번쩍이고 진동하고

가물거리며 밝고 투명하고 예리하고 겁이 나는,

마치 오색실을 함께 꼰 것 같은 다섯 가지

 색깔로 빛나는 순수하고 직관적인 지혜의 빛이

다섯 비드야다라 지배자들의 심장으로부터

 나타나 당신의 심장을 꿰뚫을 것입니다.

그래서 당신의 눈은 그 빛을 견딜 수 없습니다.

At the same time,

 a dull blue light from the brute world will come to shine along with the Radiances of Wisdom.

 Then, through the influence of the illusions of thy propensities,

 thou wilt feel afraid of the radiance of the five colours; and [wishing to] flee from it,

 thou wilt feel attracted towards the dull light from the brute-world. Thereupon,

be not afraid of that brilliant radiance of five colours,

nor terrified; but know the Wisdom to be thine own.

동시에 축생 세계의 흐릿한 초록 빛 또한

 그 지혜의 빛과 함께 비칠 것입니다.

그때 무의식의 성향들에 의해 생긴

 혼란의 영향으로

당신은 오색 빛을 두려워하여 달아날 것입니다.

그러나 당신은 축생 세계의 흐릿한 빛에는

 마음을 빼앗기게 될 것입니다.

그 순간 예리하게 빛나는 오색 빛을 두려워하지 마십시오.

그 빛을 무서워하지 말고 다만

그것이 지혜임을 알아차리십시오.

Within those radiances,

 the natural sound of the Truth will reverberate like a thousand thunders.

The sound will come with a rolling reverberation, [amidst which] will be heard,

 'Slay! Slay!' and awe-inspiring mantras. Fear not. Flee not. Be not terrified. Know them [i.e. these sounds] to be [of] the intellectual faculties of thine own [inner] light.

그 빛 안에서 진리의 모든 자연스러운 소리들이

마치 천 개의 천둥이 울리는 것처럼 들려 올 것입니다.

그것은 함성과 째는 듯한 분노의 만트라

*소리로 울려 퍼지고

천둥이 치는 듯이 으르렁거립니다.

그 소리를 두려워하지 마십시오.

달아나지 마십시오.

무서워하지 마십시오.

그것이 당신의 마음의 활동이며 당신

 자신의 투영임을 알아차리십시오.

Be not attracted towards the dull blue light of the brute-world; be not weak.

 If thou art attracted, thou wilt fall into the brute-world,

 wherein stupidity predominates,

 and suffer the illimitable miseries of slavery and dumbness and stupidness;

and it will be a very long time ere thou canst get out. Be not attracted towards it.

 Put thy faith in the bright, dazzling, five-coloured radiance.

 Direct thy mind one-pointedly towards the deities,

the Knowledge-Holding Conquerors. Think, one-pointedly,

 thus: 'These Knowledge-Holding Deities,

the Heroes, and the Dākinīs have come from the holy paradise realms to receive

 me; I supplicate them all: up to this day,

 although the Five Orders of the Buddhas of the Three Times have

 all exerted the rays of their grace and compassion,

 yet have I not been rescued by them.

 Alas, for a being like me! May the Knowledge-Holding

 Deities not let me go downwards further than this, but hold me

with the hook of their compassion, and lead me to the holy paradises.'

Thinking in that manner, one-pointedly, pray thus:

축생 세계의 흐릿한 빛에 마음을

 빼앗기지 마십시오.

그 빛을 동경하지 마십시오.

만일 당신이 그 빛에 마음을 빼앗긴다면

 당신은 무지한 축생 세계로 떨어져,

그벗어날 길이 없는  곳에서 어리석고

말 못하는 노예 상태의

극심한 고통을 겪을 것입니다.

그러므로 그 빛에 마음을 빼앗기지 마십시오.

투명하고 밝은 오색 빛을 간절히 바라십시오.

그리고 신성한 비드야다라님들과

스승님들에게 일념으로 집중하고 이렇게 생각하십시오.

 
'전사들과 다키니들을 동반한

이들 비드야다라님들은

나를 공간의 순수한 세계로 이끌어 주기 위하여 나타났다.

비드야다라님들이시여,

 이 날까지 과거 현재 미래의 그렇게 많은 부처님 가족들이

자비의 광선을 보내왔건만, 장점을 모으지 못했고 알아차리지

 못한 저 같은 중생들에게 모든 배려를 다 해주소서.

 아! 저 같은 중생들을 위해주소서.

모든 비드야다라님이시여,

제가 이보다 더 낮은 세계로 가는 것을 내버려두지 마시고

당신의 자비의 갈고리로 저를 붙잡아

 속히 공간의 순수한 세계로 끌어당겨 주소서.'
일념으로 강하게 집중하고 다음의 기원문을 외우십시오.

'O ye Knowledge-Holding Deities, pray hearken unto me;
Lead me on the Path, out of your great love
When {I am] wandering in the Sangsāra, because of intensified propensities,
On the bright light-path of the Simultaneously-born Wisdom
May the bands of Heroes, the Knowledge-Holders, lead me;
May the bands of the Mothers, the dākinīs, be [my] rear-guard;
May they save me from the fearful ambuscades of the Bardo,
And place me in the pure Paradise Realms.'

"신성한 비드야다라님들이시여, 

 저에게 관심을 보이시고
 길을 가는 저를 위대한 사랑으로 이끄소서.

 강한 무의식의 성향들로 인하여
 제가 윤회계를 방황할 때

 직관적인 지혜의 밝은 빛의 길을 따라
 비드야다라님들 그리고 전사님들
 제 앞에 나투시고
 그들의 배우자 다키니님들 제 뒤에 나투소서.
 바르도의 위험한 좁은 길을 건너도록 도와주시고
 공간의 순수한 세계로 저를 데려가소서."

Praying thus, in deep faith and humility,

there is no doubt that one will be born within the pure Paradise Realms,

 after being merged, in rainbow-light, into the heart of the Knowledge-Holding Deities.

All the pandit classes, too, coming to recognize at this stage, obtain liberation; even those of evil propensities being sure to be liberated here.

Here endeth the part of the Great Th?ol concerned

with the setting-face-to-face of the Peaceful [Deities]

of the Ch?yid Bardo and the setting-face-to-face of the Clear Light of the Chikhai Bardo.

깊은 헌신의 마음으로 이 기원문을 외움으로써,

그는 신성한 비드야다라들의 심장에 있는

 무지개 빛 속으로 녹아 들어가

틀림없이 공간의 순수한 세계에 태어나게 될 것이다.

모든 유형의 영적인 친구들 역시 이렇게

한 결과 알아차리고 모두 해탈되었다.

나쁜 무의식 성향들을 가진 사람들조차

 틀림없이 여기에서 해탈되었다.

죽음의 순간의 바르도 기간에서

 광휘를 안내하고
평화로운 다르마타 바르도 간을 안내

하는《들음을 통한 대 해탈》의 첫 번째 부분을 마침.

이티 삼마야 갸 갸 갸*

* 이 신들은 순수하게 탄트라에만 등장하는 신들이다.

 지명자(持明者)라고 번역되는데서 알 수 있듯이 이때의

지식은 무지에 반대되는 지식이고 어둠(무명)에 반대되는 빛(광명)이다.(웬츠)

* 다키니(dakini)는 하늘을 날아다니는 자란 뜻이며

 선하거나 악한 특별한 신통력을 지닌 여신들이다.

 이들 역시 순수하게 탄트라 학파에서 탄생했다.

 인간의 해골과 거기에 채워진 피는 삶을 포기함,

윤회계를 포기함,

다시 말해 세상의 십자가에 자신을 희생함을 상징한다.

 결인은 수인(手印)이라고도 한다.

무드라(mudra)의 번역으로,

손이나 손가락 또는 몸의 동작으로 표현하는 상징적 표시이다.(웬츠)

* 티벳 라마들은 종교의식에서 음악을 연주할 때

일곱 또는 여덟 종류의 악기를 사용한다.

 그것들은 큰 북, 바라, 소라나팔, 요령, 작은북, 작은 나팔, 큰 나팔,

사람 허벅지 뼈로 만든 나팔이다.

비록 이 악기들이 어우러져서 내는

 소리는 아름다운 곡조와는 거리가 멀지만,

 라마들은 그것들이 수행하는 신자들에게

심령적으로 깊은 숭배의 마음과 신앙심을 불러일으킨다고 믿는다.

 왜냐하면 그것들은 손가락으로 외부소리를 차단하기 위하여

 두 귀를 막았을 때 자신의 몸 안에서 들리는

자연의 소리에 해당하는 소리이기 때문이라는 것이다.

 그들이 말하는 대로 두 귀를 막으면 큰북을 치는 듯한 소리,

 바라를 치는 듯한 충돌음, 요령을 치는 듯한 울림소리,

 작은 북을 치는 듯한 두들기는 소리,

그리고 작은 나팔과 같은 신음하는 소리가 들리고

 큰 나팔 소리 같은 저음의 신음소리가 들리며, 허벅지 뼈 나팔에서

나는 것처럼 진동하는 소리가 들린다.

 이것은 신체의 각 에너지 센터(차크라)에서 나는 소리와 같다.

 이것은 티벳 종교 음악의 이론으로서 대단히 흥미 있을 뿐만 아니라

다음에 나오는 '진리의 자연스런 소리'를 신비

과학적으로 해설할 수 있는 실마리가 된다.

 이 소리들은 인간의 마음에서 나오는 소리들이다.(웬츠)

* 만트라(mantra). 진언(眞言). 특별한 신이나 속성

 또는 힘의 정수를 소리로 표현하는 산스크리트

 단어나 음절의 정해진 문구.(용어)
