13. New Characters!
“Xinxi”(新市) had a sannoki (算木).
Qiu had Tujianmok.
Buyeo had Seosan(書算).
Then, in the second year of
Gyarukdangun in the Dangun century.
Samrang(三郞) Eoboruk(乙普勒) wrote 38 characters of sine
and and called it ‘Karenda.’” (Sodo Sutra)
Meanwhile, in the east, the Hwanwoong sought to abandon all the worldly elements of Assyria and renew all things, becoming a people who lived purely in remembrance of God. In doing so, he inherited from his father the Heavenly Seal engraved with a circle, a room, and a square, which was the basis for the science of solving the basic principles and problems of living in the world given to Adam and Eve by God, who had pity on them when they were expelled from the Garden of Eden and had to live in a harsh world.
God created Adam and Eve and gave them many things to live in the Garden of Eden, but the most important thing was that language was essential to communicate with others, no matter who they were, and that language could be written down so that they could communicate with people who were far away and could not talk to them face-to-face. And even when Adam and Eve committed the sin of disobedience and were expelled from the Garden of Eden, fortunately, God allowed them to use the language necessary for communication between humans, and Adam and Eve were able to adapt and pioneer in the harsh living environment after being expelled from the Garden of Eden while communicating through language. Then, their descendants moved to the East, centered on Hwanwoong. Along the way, their leader, Hwan Woong, gradually realized the need to communicate accurately with people far away. He remembered the Heavenly Seal that he had received when he left Assyria, which was the basis for the establishment of the nation and its people, and he had a servant who was in charge of it create a writing system based on it, and he created a new writing system, which became known as True Writing.
And he said to Yugi
“'There is a new writing on the wall
of the blue rock of Mount Taebaek.
and its shape is like the letter 'ㄱ'.
The people of the world have said,
'This is the wish of the great sage Shinji.
Some say,
'This is the beginning of the creation of letters.
Its strokes are in the form of a straight line
and a curved line.
Its meaning has a controlled shape
Its form and sound also seem to have come
from a planned will.” (Sodo Sutra)
In this way, the language given by God was used, and through him the first writing was created, and with that writing, it was used until the third generation of the Dynasty, but in the second year of the reign of King Dangun, the customs were not yet the same, and the language of each province was different, so there was a true writing that expressed the meaning with shapes, but there were many people who could not speak even with those in ten houses, and it was difficult for them to understand each other even in a country of a hundred li. Therefore, he commanded Samrang to make 38 characters of pure sound, and called it 'Garimto'. The Shaodo Sutra records,
“In Xinshi, there was Sanmok.
In Qiu, there was the Tujian tree.
Buyeo had Seosan(書算).
And in the second year of Gyaruk-dan-gun in the Dangun century
He wrote 38 sine characters for the three rings
and called it ‘Garimda.’”
After the founding of the Dangun Joseon Dynasty in 2333 BC, the country that has continued to exist since then has reached the third Dangun Dangun in 2181 BC. In order to make the people live well in accordance with the will of his grandfather, Dangun Dangun recognized another need, which is the need to record and preserve the words received from God so that posterity can see them, and to share opinions closely and communicate more smoothly through writing in daily life. Therefore, he commanded Samrang Eboruk to create a writing system, which is the Garimto script.
This principle is a geometric explanation and expression of the relationship between God and the things and people of the earth. These karimto scripts were created using the “fusion ligature” method, which is a method of combining letters according to their phonetic sounds to form compound letters.
These garimto characters are both sound characters (phonetic characters) and meaning characters (ideograms = ideograms) that match the meaning of Korean sounds in a controlled way. And these karimto characters are geometric shapes that symbolize concepts that imply the laws of relationships between things, not concrete shapes of things.
These karimto characters later influenced many neighboring countries to create their own scripts based on them, such as the Japanese 'New Alphabet', the Mongolian 'Paspa Script', the Indian 'Sanskrito' alphabet, and the 'Gujarati' script. Many other scripts would be influenced by the Garimto script, especially the later Hangul script.
