13. Language that changes clothes!
After thinking about that, I couldn't just sit still. So first, I should provide this source to the playwrights of broadcasting stations that are currently influential in the Korean Wave, and with their skills and good writing, write a script that can influence young people in many countries to naturally express their language in Korean with fun and aspiration, and if it is directed and produced as a good work and broadcasted to the world, and if young people around the world actually start expressing their language in Korean and sharing it with their lovers and conveying their thoughts in short sentences in Korean on their cell phones? They will come to know the greatness of Korean, and if this is repeated with enjoyment and becomes the motivation and starting point for them to learn the basics of Korean and use it on their own, then this operation will be successful. Then, if Korean language teachers or missionaries who live in each country and know the language of the other country and teach Korean on site actually supplement the shortcomings of local young people, and if they find it even more fun, this emotion and culture will spread even more. If that happens, then each organization related to Hangul will come forward and study the basic notation method, create a notation standard, establish a notation method for each language, and then the country will invest the necessary funds to spread it, so that many organizations can spread and apply it in various ways, and when this becomes natural in the target country, countries and peoples that write their own language in Hangul will begin to emerge.
However, some may think that starting such work is a useless thing. Yes! You may think so. That is, if you do not have the eyes to see, that is, the foresight. However, it is important to teach Hangul on your own somewhere, and furthermore, to guide the Korean language and spread the gospel, but you must know that the results will be enormous if such a system is created. Therefore, if it is something that can change the roots of emotions, culture, and the direction of faith in the future, it is much more valuable and can bear great fruit to approach and improve it. And even if not, it is no exaggeration to say that the influence of the individual in the process has already been sufficiently exerted in the process. Therefore, we all need to open our hearts and eyes and face reality and the future in terms of how to implement, not in terms of changing the truth. Only then can we bear great fruit. And if so, someone must first try and challenge these things in order to open the foundation.
So, in order to start with the beginning of that influence, I started searching the Internet to see who the playwrights who are said to be popular on the Internet are. However, although several famous writers came to mind, I could not find even a single contact or email address for them no matter where I went for an hour.
“Oh!
The world is like this now!
How dangerous and annoying must it be for everyone to hide their contact information!”
Thinking about this made me realize that this world is dangerous, naturally and desperately. However, I really wanted to find their contact information. Then, a method came to mind. One of the sites where the playwright’s story came out seemed to be the ‘Broadcast Writers Association’. So I immediately made an international call. When the guide answered the phone, I told her where I was and what I was doing, that I was someone who could be found on the Internet, and that I was not a strange person, and that I wanted to know Writer Kim’s contact information. When I did, she said that it was personal information and that she could not give it to me. So I revealed my identity once more and asked her to give me my phone number, email address, and KakaoTalk ID, and asked her to share these with me so that we could communicate through them. She said that she would do so. However, I was a little suspicious, so I told her that if she didn’t want me to, I could tell her that and she would look for someone else. The guide who answered the phone said that she would do so. So I waited, but to this day, there has been no news. Then this time, I searched the Korean Language Society website on the Internet and looked at the list of executives. There, the president of the society was introduced with a picture and his name. When I looked at his resume, I saw that he was currently a Korean language professor at a famous university. I met with the chairman and saw that the current work of the Korean Language Society goes beyond Hangul and involves a significant amount of work related to the Korean language. That is understandable, as Hangul’s characteristics are like that, and that is why various introductory documents or videos introducing Hangul say that Hangul is very easy, scientific, and systematic.
However, if we change that statement, it means that the principles are easy and simple enough that you can already understand them if you put in a certain amount of time or effort. There may be limitations to dealing with such things in depth. As a result, it seems that even the Korean Language Society is not researching Hangul, teaching methods, or promoting and informing others about Hangul, but rather, as if the society is trying to look high-level, it is dealing with the Korean language that the ‘Korean Language Society’ should be doing.
Perhaps, if we only deal with Hangul, we may be misunderstood as having a low academic standard, and it is as if those who have studied Hangul a lot have lived abroad and are not familiar with it, but rather use or prefer English or foreign words more and lower their level? I wonder if even those who deal with Hangul think in that way, as if they are trying to brag about it. That’s why it’s hard to tell whether it’s a ‘Hangul Society’ or a ‘Korean Language Society.’
That’s why I’m pointing this out, and if Korean has already been systematically organized and there’s nothing more to do, then if we create a standard for writing languages in Hangul for countries or ethnic groups that have languages but no letters so that Hangul can be used to write other languages, and if we help those ethnic groups and countries apply it, there’s a lot of work to do, and as a result, countries and ethnic groups that actually express their own languages in Hangul will actually appear. But from the perspective of someone like me who is not an expert on Hangul but is teaching basic education, I think that things are going well in the right direction, but the direction of work is a bit off. So I think it’s right for the society to try and prepare for this, so I wanted to share my opinion on it. And for foreigners who want to learn more about Korean, we can actually teach Korean based on that. Therefore, isn’t it the job of the Korean Language Society to systematically create a program to master Hangul itself and award Hangul qualifications upon completion of the course? I thought so. Thinking about such things made me anxious even for a moment. However, it was not possible to just suddenly go to Korea every time. That may be why I was even more anxious.
Then I finally came to Korea. What would happen if countries that really had a language but no writing system could write their language in Hangul? I had only thought about that every day until now. “Then it would probably be much easier for Koreans to learn the language of the other country, and it would also be much easier for the other country’s people to learn Korean!” And I thought that it would be a great advantage in the mission field where the gospel is spread. Wow! This was truly a groundbreaking method. I was still lost in thought on the plane to Korea.
Then how could countries without writing systems write their own language in Hangul? No matter how good the influence, it would cost a lot of money to change the current English alphabet to Hangul, and it would take a certain amount of time to teach it to all the people and for it to become my own, so I thought that no leader of any country would do something like that, and of course the people would not agree. “Then, isn’t it useless?” I felt really frustrated when I thought about it like that. I couldn’t sleep at night thinking that there might be a way, but I couldn’t come up with any good ideas. And all my thoughts became tangled up and became a mess. After sleeping poorly on the plane and arriving in Korea the next day, I had an important appointment right away, so despite being in a daze, I roughly picked up my luggage and threw it in the airport hotel and headed out again. The weather was unusually clear and clean today, unlike the sky in Seoul. Maybe that’s why people’s steps seemed much brighter and more cheerful. In that situation, I was the only one who had not slept well the night before on the plane, so I was walking toward the train station in a daze like someone addicted to drugs. Then, as I was passing by a store selling electronics, a famous drama that had been popular on TV was being recorded and replayed. I had read an article that said that it was filmed overseas and that it was popular in many countries and that it made a lot of money.
But as I was thinking about that, the things I had thought about last time suddenly flashed through my mind. So, as I was walking down the street, I suddenly shouted:
“Oh!
That’s right!”
And then, I suddenly came to my senses. People passing by glanced at me and passed by. But I didn’t care. Yes! If a drama containing a love story between a local and a Korean, who teaches and learns the local language by writing the local language in Korean, becomes popular in many countries, naturally the young people in those countries will follow the drama and write their own language in Korean, and in order to do so, they will study the consonants and vowels of the Korean alphabet and their combinations, and after that, a culture of writing their own language in Korean? If such a culture were to develop among the young people of that country, then it would be possible if the government stepped in and provided support. So I thought it would be good to make such a thing happen naturally, and naturally I thought about the playwrights of the popular dramas again. I thought that the only way would be to provide ideas for famous writers to write works with such content through interesting stories.
But the problem was that I thought about the lack of response I received when I contacted the Playwrights Association last time. Then I thought, Ah! Is there no way to connect writers? After thinking about it, I decided to go to the Broadcast Writers Association and ask them to do it myself after finishing the meeting today. And then, just in case I forgot the idea, I wrote it down on my phone’s memo pad and, as if I suddenly felt a surge of energy, I headed to the subway station to go to today’s meeting place. As soon as I finished the meeting, I went to a nearby internet room and checked the Broadcast Writers Association again to confirm the address and directions. Then I got on the subway and headed to Yeouido. After looking at the map and finding the Playwrights Association with difficulty, I went to the information booth and very politely asked if I was a certain kind of person and would like to know the contact information of a writer who was somewhat well-known for this or that reason, and I even showed my ID. When I did that, the female employee who was guiding me said that she couldn’t give me the contact information of anyone who was well-known, and that it was personal information. So even though I told her again that I really needed it and that I was asking for it, she just kept repeating the same thing. No, I was not trying to harm them, but I had a good source and wanted to provide it to them. I raised my voice a little and tried to tell them again. But now they didn’t respond and were doing something else. So I got angry. So I hit the table at the information desk and yelled at them.
“Look at this!
I’m not harming the writers.
I’m saying this because I have something important to do.”
When I said that, the girl at the information desk was startled and everyone around me looked at me. Then, a very gentleman who was just coming out of the elevator approached me and asked the girl what was going on. Then the girl said,
“This person keeps asking for the writers’ contact information,
and I told him that it’s personal information,
so I can’t give it to him.”
And she made a sad face.
“Look at this.
I told him that I had revealed my identity and that I had something important to do, so I asked him to contact the people involved, and he said, “You’re saying that you absolutely cannot!”
So I shouted, and the gentleman grabbed my arm and said,
“Can you tell me what’s going on?”
and motioned for me to follow him. So I glanced at the girl and followed the gentleman, and we went into a cafe. He said,
“No, I don’t want to go here,”
and offered me a seat. He then called over the cafe staff. He then asked me if I would like a cup of coffee. So I suppressed my anger and answered,
“I don’t drink coffee.”
Then he asked,
“How about orange juice?”
I answered,
“Yes.”
Then I ordered two glasses of juice, and when the cafe staff took my order and left, he asked me,
“What’s going on?”
So I apologized for making a fuss first, and then asked,
“Excuse me, who are you?”
Then he took out his business card from his pocket and handed it to me. When I looked at it, I saw that it had the title of the president of the Writers’ Association on it. So I gave him my business card and introduced myself,
“I am a missionary working in ‘Molisha’
and I do various things.”
Then, looking at the business card,
“Oh, you must be working hard.
You do a lot of different things.
I am an elder at Sungmin Church.”
He introduced himself. When I heard that, my face turned red for no reason. So I apologized again,
“I am sorry and embarrassed for making a fuss about the missionary’s reputation.”
Then,
“You must have a reason.
Should I listen to what you have to say?”
So
“Actually, I am not a major,
but I am teaching Korean in the field of ministry,
and as a result, I have developed a certain level of interest. However, among the missionary countries, such as our country before Hangul was created,
there are countries that have a language but no letters,
so they borrow the English alphabet to write their own language.
Hangul is the best writing system that exists, and experts recognize it. If those countries change their writing system to Hangul,
there will be many mutual benefits,
and above all, it will be very beneficial for planting the gospel in mission fields.
The problem is that while thinking about how to solve this difficult problem,
there are many countries that are very interested in the Korean Wave,
and by writing the local language in Hangul,
teaching the local language,
and producing a drama that contains a love story between a local person and a Korean,
and making it popular in many countries,
naturally, young people in those countries will follow the drama and write their own language in Hangul,
and to do so, they will study the consonants and vowels of Hangul and their combinations,
and after that, If a culture of writing their own language in Korean were to emerge among the youth of that country,
then the government would step in and provide support,
so I thought it would be possible,
so I tried to make such a suggestion to the writers,
so I asked for their contact information,
but they kept refusing,
so I felt like I was being misunderstood as someone who was causing harm,
and I was a little upset.
The ‘Molisha’ people I work with don’t do that.
So I got secretly angry and frustrated, so I ended up yelling at them.
I’m sorry.”
Then the elder said that these days are like that, so please understand, and that if something like that actually happens, as the missionary said, it would be a very meaningful thing, and if it really happens as you said, wouldn’t it be good for everyone, and in that sense, he made a phone call saying that he would introduce one writer who would do it.
“Writer Kim!
Are you still in the office? Yes, that’s good.
Then I have someone I’d like to introduce to you.
Would you like to come to the cafe downstairs?
Yes! I’ll wait.”
He said that and hung up the phone. Then he said that a good writer who would fit the part you mentioned happened to be in the office, so he asked him to come down, and that he would introduce him to you. While the two were talking about this and that, a middle-aged woman came up to him and said,
“Is there someone you’d like to introduce to me?”
The elder greeted him warmly and said,
“This person is a missionary from ‘Molisha’,
I heard he has good material for writing,
I thought he would be helpful to you,
so I’m going to introduce him to you.”
“Oh! Me too!
I thought you were going to introduce me to a good spouse,
but I ended up drinking all the water by myself!”
He joked,
“Yes. If there’s someone good, I’ll definitely introduce you to them.”
The two of them laughed together. I took out my business card and handed it to him,
“I’m missionary Lee, who works at ‘Molisha.’”
When I introduced myself, he also gave me his business card and said,
“I’m writer Kim.
I’m a deacon at ‘Shinpo Central Church.’
It’s nice to meet you, missionary.”
I was surprised and said,
“Really?”
Because ‘Shinpo Central Church’ was the church where I once worked as an assistant pastor.
So when I told him that fact, he was also surprised and said,
“Really?
I’ve been attending that church since I was young…?”
And he asked me,
“When did you work there?”
So,
“I was in charge of the middle and high school department around 1992,
and I also directed the choir…!”
When I said,
“Then aren’t you this Gangdo-sa?”
That’s what happened. So
“But…!”
I said, and suddenly she said loudly,
“Gangdo-sa!
It’s Miyoung!”
. I tried to recall my memory, and at the moment I said, “Miyoung?”
Ah!
Teacher Kim Miyoung?”
“Yes! That’s right.”
At that moment, we were so happy to see each other that we couldn’t let go of each other’s hands. So at that time, she was a college student who was in charge of my middle and high school department, and she was a young man who worked hard and devotedly to teach the students together. But now she has become such an amazing writer. If I had known that this sister was such a successful writer, I wouldn’t have had to go through so much trouble to find a writer!... That’s what I thought. But what can I do? I didn’t know that. Fortunately, I was so happy to have met her now.
“It’s so nice to meet you!”
“Ah! Yes!
Me too. It’s so nice to meet you.”
The elder who was looking at us said,
“Ah! Let’s sit down first and talk.”
So we finally sat down. And we decided to talk about personal things later, but I explained my thoughts passionately and in detail about what I had come to see. Then,
“If Teacher Kim Mi-young
No! Deacon Kim,
No! Writer Kim
Catch up on the story and describe it well
and write a good piece,
I think it will be good in many ways.”
I asked him, confusing the titles,
“It’s a very unique story, so it won’t be easy
But I’ll try to come up with a plan,
thinking of the passion of the missionary,
No! Missionary.”
And after that, Writer Kim would briefly tell me about the story through KakaoTalk while he was planning it, and whenever he finished a part of the story, he would send me the text through email. And sometimes, when he got stuck on the story, he would ask me for ideas. At that time, I suggested foreign scenes or possible content with foreigners, and Writer Kim wrote those stories very deliciously. At that time, I would react to the story and the composition of the play from the perspective of a reader or a viewer. In this way, I could see that a part of the initial stage that I had thought of was really starting and progressing.
After six months of hard work, the entire script was finally completed in November 2018. And I decided to title this work “Language of Love.” While writing this work, I prayed that Writer Kim’s good handwriting would create a good work, and that it would eventually become a valuable tool for missionary work, even though it was not visible on the outside, and I sweat a lot on my forehead as I wrote it. Now all that's left is for this script to meet a good director and a big producer, and for it to be directed and made into a really great drama, so that it can be a work of warm emotion and a fresh and touching love story for viewers, and for it to be loved by people all over the world, and for the main character to become a new Hallyu icon, and for his actions to become an ideal behavioral pattern for everyone. I hope and pray for that.
