About the DMZ Pilgrimage Art Festival, 2015
The barb wired iron fence (or the borderline) division area between North and South Korea is a remnant of the tragic history that has not been solved yet. This is a fatalistic yoke that the Korean must overcome.
The physical boundaries that came into existence ensuing the violence of the fatal division resulting from conflicting ideologies of the 20th century have been mostly deconstructed throughout the world. However, the Korean peninsula is uniquely misplaced from the main stream global peace issue.
DMZ, or Demilitarized Zone, exists between two boundaries in the Korean Peninsula, divided into north and south based on the 38th parallel. DMZ is a symbolic place of tension but it became also a natural wildlife treasure because of its unreachable location from human steps. Here some questions are raised: How can we interpret this kind of ironic situation? What is the relationship between the nature and the modern humanity?
Definitely, DMZ Art Festival has distinguishable features from other ones. As it is located in the boundary area, the militaries of South Korean and North Korean are adjacent to each other; the uniqueness of its geographical environment stands out. This incomparable regional identity is to be exposed and expressed at the DMZ Art Festival. Indeed, it has been a witness to the current predicament of the Korean Peninsula as a non-developmental environment and a military operation area internationally.
With ‘themes’ derived from the reality of environmental fragmentation, many well-known domestic and international artists have been creating a communicational place through their arts in various genre each year.
Human race has recorded histories with unending conflicts, such as, ideology, race, class, religion and so on. DMZ represents a leaf in our conscious history on ideological conflict that exists without liquidation. DMZ lives a life of an active volcano yet it displays stillness and clogged look. DMZ is an extreme symbol of conflict and of confrontation, which delivers tension to Korean and world citizens alike even in 21st century. In front of the DMZ, world artists shall create visual image works and install them together that reflect various awareness and perspectives concerning human race. Here upon, artists are called for recreating a cultural communication spot that could elevate discussions on ‘peace of mankind.’
